Re: Oregon Aviation Thread - 2017

Here are our weekly OAG updates, courtesy of Enilria & his weekly sitewide OAG thread:

AS PDX-BZN JUN 1.0>2 JUL 1.0>2 AUG 1.0>1.8
AS PDX-DFW MAY 1.4>1.0 JUN 2>1.0 JUL 2>1.0 AUG 1.8>1.0
AS PDX-FCA APR 0>0.9
AS PDX-ORD MAR 1.6>0.9 APR 1.8>1.0
AS PDX-PSP MAY 1.6>1.2
AS PDX-SJC APR 5>4
AS PDX-STS JUN 1.0>2 JUL 1.0>2 AUG 1.0>1.8

DL DTW-PDX APR 1.4>1.0
DL SEA-PDX MAR 6>7

UA DEN-EUG JUN 2.0>3 JUL 2>3
UA DEN-MFR JUN 2.0>3 JUL 2>3
UA DEN-RDM JUN 2.0>3 JUL 2>3 AUG 2>3
UA SFO-PDX APR 9>8 MAY 9>8
UA SFO-RDM MAY 3>4

Looks like DL is feeding PDX via their SEA hub a bit more, which makes sense, I guess AS & NK are making it hard for DL on the DTW-PDX route.

UA just added to 3 x daily on SFO-RDM, now it's 4 x daily, must be good advance bookings. UA has sure shown some real love in non PDX routes, smart move, IMHO.

This is a little surprising as it appears a more or less direct transfer of capacity to WN as they ramp up to 6x (from 4x recently, maybe 5 now). AS seems to be doing some recalibrating after a year of kitchen sink expansion in CA.

I'm also surprised to see there's no evening SJC-PDX flight. For PDX-based flyers, if you have business in the south bay during the day and want to return in the evening, your choices are WN or hike up to OAK/SFO.

Portland International Airport PDX
November 2017

2016: 1,507,059
2017: 1,528,704
+1.4%

Jan-Nov 2017: 17,508,854

Will likely hit 19 million for 2017. Not bad considering the lack of interest from Frontier and Spirit, the demise of PenAir, Southwest’s contraction, and problems/cutbacks at Horizon.

I really have no idea on how cargo ops work, but it seems to me that during the holiday season, UPS has significantly more flights to/from PDX than FDX with flight going to/from RFD, DFW, PHX, DSM, ICT, PHL, ONT, ANC, SDF...and wherever else.

FDX has the same 'ole boring flights from MEM, IND, EWR, AFW, and OAK.

So I guess my question is, why is UPS seem to have so many more flights to Portland this time of year. When I look at other airports like SLC, they don't have any where near as many.

Any insight on cargo and routing would be terrific.

Heads-up to any PDX spotters. It appears that the first DL Airbus A321 (N331DN) is enroute to PDX from MSP as flight 1503. What is rather exciting about this flight is the fact that aircraft N331DN appears to be making it's first revenue flight from MSP-PDX-MSP (12-28-2017). N331DN was just delivered from the Airbus Mobile, AL facility on December, 15.

I flew PDX-MEX on Tuesday night. Totally painless.

Thinking I’ll use this in the future for Central America destinations.
Great add for PDX.

Thanks for the tip. Too bad there isn't preclearance for MEX. After a few trips though Vancouver with preclearance I like this option. It's not like PDX customs is bad, but the ability to just get going once I've finished the last leg is really nice.

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

Those are the assumed daily frequencies that will operate in the month. The number is found by finding the number of scheduled operations for a given route for a month, and dividing the total by the number of days in the month. For example, March has 31 days. A route that is flown 62 times in a month will have an assumed "2 flights per day.". A route flown 35 times that month will have "1.1" flights per day, likely an extra frequency on a high demand day.

The arrows are indicative of changes from one week to the next, on the PDX-EUG example above, in February Alaska will be operating 4 flights a day, a change from 3. The change is only indicative of what was for sale when the data was pulled, and not from a different time period. Last week Alaska had 3 flights a day loaded for Feb, and this week they have 4 flights a day loaded for Feb.

I hope that helps.

I see these types of reports from the OAG system here a lot, and they're really useful data. How does one go about accessing that information?

Here are the newest updates, Happy New Years!

UA ORD-PDX MAY 4>3
UA SFO-EUG JUN 4>5 JUL 4>5 AUG 4>5 SEP 4>5
UA SFO-MFR JUN 4>5 JUL 4>5
UA SFO-RDM JUN 4>5 JUL 3>5 AUG 3>5

UA keeps adding frequencies to non PDX stations, I think they are going to capture more pax from EUG, MFR & RDM, while PDX tugs along with fluctuating frequencies.

Alaska adds a second PDX-ORD (as VX) in March. Also, NK resumes in spring.

I wonder why UA is doing this. I would guess that it would be because they don't want to go up against AS at PDX.

NK has operated PDX-ORD in the summer months for awhile now. It's just a resuming seasonal flight...

Also, AC had PDX-YYZ listed as year-round for a few months or so, but it was recently pulled back to seasonal (ending in October). I wonder what's keeping them from running this route year-round, granted that AC already has 2x daily YYZ-SEA flights already intact...

When PDX-SFO is $100.00 r/t & these markets easily fetch a 100% premium & it's mostly CR2's to MFR with one A-319, RDM gets one E-175 & the rest are CR2's, while EUG enjoys 2 A-320, 1 A-319 a CR7 & one CR2 UA fetches a premium from these markets, all with shorter stage lengths than PDX-SFO & that is why UA is doing this, these are markets UA has served for many decades, except RDM.
