Horizon?

Maintenance, or delivery of a new frame. Horizon's Q400's have a maintenance base at PDX, (to answer your Edmonton question earlier, not sure if they work on the 175's) been there. You will see them arrive from random airports that don't have scheduled service to PDX. Not sure why Sun Country has had a couple of in and out DEN flights the last few days though.

QX has also been doing a lot of training flights with the E175, showing up in all kinds of places. When is EIS with the QX 175, or is it already on line?

For passenger service, It's my understanding it will be August 18th, when QX starts PDX-ABQ-SNA-ABQ-PDX on their new jets, the pretty E-175. IIRC, they are going to have training throughout the summer.

Delta just updated their schedules for next year 2018. Looks like seasonal PDX-LHR will resume in March at 4x/week.

The QX E175 is already in passenger service. Doing PDX-STL, among others.

QX is running PDX-STL, SEA-STL, PDX-SEA, SEA-SFO, SEA-OAK, and SEA-ONT on the E75. 4 A/C in the fleet at the moment. 620, 622, 623, and 624.

They have also subbed E175 for Q400 on PDX-OAK. It's on the schedule schedule for July but unfortunately as of now goes back to Q400 August 1.

Now that AC has again begun seasonal non-stop PDX-YYZ service I see that in 2018 they will be dropping their year-round SLC service all together. I recall several past posts where some had discussed why AC had made their YYZ-SLC flights year-round and PDX only seasonal. Still confounding to me...obviously the market is different and DL ramped up non-stops from SLC to YYZ as well.

It does make me wonder...with AC taking PDX-YYC from seasonal to year-round within the last year or so...does the Toronto flight merit an adjustment?

Would be nice, however DL was probably pushed out by DL in SLC, and there is no such competition at PDX. YYZ is most likely added for additional European connections in the summer. YYC and YVR provide enough connections in the offseason, European or Canadian. YYC was actually 2X last summer when they ran CRJ's on the route. Now with the 1X Q400, plus the E190 to YYZ, the total seats are actually a little less. Not a positive harbinger of things moving forward.

I think AS did this last summer as well, but can't remember 100%, and I think it left around 445pm instead of 715pm. This summer it looks to be Wed and Fri, with a red-eye coming back. Started on Jun 7th.

Don't forget, PDX is a VERY seasonal leisure destination and we have our cold and rainy winter weather to thank for that. SLC has some of the most renowned ski resorts in North America that bring in traffic during the winter months. That being said, SLC-YYZ is a small market and now that AC has dropped the route I wouldn't be surprised to see DL drop it also.

Feds affirm KS for EAS air service between PDX-CEC

According to a Thursday release from PenAir, the two-year award will allow PenAir to provide 14 nonstop round trip flights per week to Portland, starting Oct. 1, 2017 and ending Sept. 30, 2019. At that time, the PenAir contract will be again up for renewal.

“PenAir will continue to overnight an aircraft at the Del Norte County Regional Airport each evening, allowing for an early morning departure each day between Crescent City and Portland. “This will allow connecting to a multitude of destinations for those traveling beyond Portland, and will give those just wanting to visit Portland the opportunity for an early arrival into the city”, states PenAir’s COO, Dave Hall.

http://www.triplicate.com/news/localnew ... ir-service

Also in the article is this tidbit about the EAS program.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget called for the elimination of EAS funding, but the House Appropriations Committee later approved $150 million for it.

Airport Manager Matthew Leitner said EAS has had much bipartisan support, as the funding comes mostly from overflight fees paid by airlines, and has an insignificant impact on the federal budget.

“The funding is very external and benefits many states,” he said, noting that Trump’s proposed EAS cut was rejected in the House and Senate. “People see the importance and virtues of (EAS),” he said. “It’s been around 40 years and it’s a proven success.” As to whether it will return in the President’s next proposed budget, Leitner said, “We’ll continue to fight. There’s a lot of support for EAS.”

Leitner added that Crescent City was the first PenAir Station in the northwest and many other providers in the region have followed on that success.

I have a feeling that the EAS for the PDX-CEC route is probably helping keep the other KS markets (PDX-OTH/LMT/RDD/ACV) at least partially afloat. They could all dry up if the EAS route went away.
Reliability is the other key component, however, and that still seems to elude KS. Today, with that front page story in the Triplicate out, the morning CEC-PDX flight canceled, and the inbound this evening is routing via LMT. That cancels the morning LMT-PDX trip. This afternoon/evening's PDX-ACV-PDX round trip is canceled. And the OTH and RDD trips canceled today as well. Sucky day all the way around.

I took this flight again last month, not full, but seems damn popular.
Not sure I want to deal with KEF if it expands much more, just a total mess in that airport.

That said, flights are fairly cheap, and it's an easy hop over.
Impressed they are going to 6x weekly, very cool to see.

(I'm trying Condor later this summer, so will be interested to compare operations)

It's been a lot better lately though. 1 mechanical really shows in a small sub fleet.

Just want to chime in and go a little off topic, but not really. Been flying a lot this year and have to say I really appreciate PDX as a facility! Just flew in and out of PHX yesterday and really wasn't a fan. Concourses felt old and run down and the airport just seemed dated overall. SJC was alright, as was ANC. FAI can't compare as it is so small. LAX was a toilet.
SLC was my old 'home' airport while away at school and I was always happy to return to PDX for visits. My new in-laws and extended family all travel quite a bit and have had nothing but praise for PDX! Great, clean, easy to navigate airport!

Icelandair goes to 6x/week this week PDX-KEF; Condor starts 4x/week next week PDX-FRA. That brings total # flights a week PDX-Europe to 21, including DL PDX-AMS 7x, and DL PDX-LHR 4x.

It really is an excellent facility. Flying in and out of there is a pleasure. Sometimes I even grab a beer and relax there for a bit after a flight.

Someone needs to add at least another nonstop PDX-LAS: 8 a day currently. Fares are outrageous, even connecting fares. By comparison, Seattle has 18-19 a day. It has nothing to do with SEA hub status.

1,605,563 (1,528,094) +5.1%

Year to date
7,129,983 (6,758,618) +5.5%

The likelihood of hitting that 20 million mark is totally possible and outstanding for a small hub airport that has a very high O&D percentage. And by small hub airport, I mean it's not a hub for AA, DL, UA, etc.

I found this quote from Bill Wyatt interesting per an interview in the Portland Tribune: "In 2001, PDX handled 12 million passengers a year. Now it's up to 18 million. Oddly, while there are fewer planes taking off from PDX than 16 years ago, the planes are larger and fuller. Only nine years ago, airlines were content with planes taking off only half full, says Wyatt."

Icelandair is here to stay, Condor is here to stay, and Volaris seems to be here to stay for the foreseeable future. As long as Alaska remains the big player here, and they will, the international flights we see will only mature and grow, and new international service isn't out of the realm of possibility within reason. I'm not suggesting we'll be at YVR levels by any means, but we're going to hit 20mm either this year or next, and this once deemed sleepy little medium sized airport is now in an entirely different category...and it happened fast!

They do codeshare with a bunch, just not Delta.

Alaska Codeshare partners:

AeroMexico
Air France
American Airlines
Cathay Pacific
Emirates
Fiji Airways
Icelandair
KLM
Korean Air
LAN
PenAir
Qantas
Ravn Alaska

They also have mileage plan partners including Condor.

Alaska: "Our partnership with Delta ended on April 30, 2017."

PDX to China

I notice a lot that AS needs to start just moving more flights to PDX. They could flow some of that vegas through PDX from points north instead of SEA and with the SEA space issues, it makes 0 sense to me. Us up here in Alaska would have no problem connecting in PDX over SEA and would probably prefer it.

If DL continues its expansion at PDX, I could actually see DL jumping in on PDX-LAS with E-175s or 717s 3x daily, like from SEA. I could also see PDX-HNL go year round, PDX-ANC be resumed and the addition of PDX-CDG.

I agree that DL could initiate PDX-LAS with the a regional jet or 717. They offer non-stops at SJC and SAN to LAS, so why not PDX?

Yes, saw that too. I'm guessing an equipment swap of some sort, N972JT did the flight. Must have been a nice surprise for those passengers fortunate enough to be in "Mint".

Look like Cathay Pacific has increased year -round Cargo service from two to three flights per week and will be providing five flights per week during peak times associated with seasonal northwest agricultural products.

I just noticed they're running two 747s into PDX on Mondays too. Could they eventually be looking at a 777 PDX-HKG to handle passengers and cargo?

Thanks for linking this. From the section regarding PDXNext:

The project has completed design development, with an additional extension of the building by 55' to the east to improve operations at Gate E11.

If they're still going to add 6 gates it's going to take more than 55' and there's no gate E11. What's he talking about?

It's possible that instead of the E extension being 750', it will end up being 805'............

Sounds like a plan! The more concourse the merrier! It'll be hard to get used to seeing WN over on E!

After about a month into the service, does anyone know how DL is doing with PDX-LHR on their seasonal/4 times a week service?

I've randomly checked various days going forward and they're pretty full, especially first class. DL allows a view of active seat maps, BA doesn't.
