Stitch, did not know that. Even worse! The 380 and 747 have to be among the worst product development fiascos in world corporate history.

I still can't understand why B launched either. Their mistake was not nearly as costly as that made on the 380 but it was dumber. Nothing worse than missing a putt after seeing the line.

Think how much faster the 787 issues could have been resolved if they weren't wasting their resources on the 8.

Boeing probably thought that as the 747 had sold well for so many years, many airlines would re order to replace the current -400 fleet. Which isn't the case.

747 was developed as a freighter because they thought SST was the way forward.

That is going to hit IB results, just hope they dont do the same with the A359s expected for 2018 in MAD.

As another article claims:

The carrier’s parent company International Airlines Group (IAG) has confirmed it is converting three options for the aircraft into firm orders, for delivery in summer 2018.

Also added two 787-9s. I checked back and those are new - they weren't announced at Paris. Lessors are pretty strong for the 787-9s and frankly widebodies in general right now.

Or a leasing company. VS had a lease option which they may have taken up and this is the replacement, maybe.

I don't see why and how IAG could place a secret order. That stuff needs board approval and as a public company we would likely know about it.

It is not a "secret" order... It has happened in the past where a company has placed a ufo only to reveal it to the markets at the appropriate time...

My hunch (and that's all it is) is VS. While BA makes sense on the surface as they just finished renegotiating their delivery positions, and such contract changes often see other changes (new orders, model switches, etc.), BA does not usually go down the 'Unidentified' route. VS, on the other hand, has recent history doing just such a thing with 789 top-ups.

I might also throw Etihad out there as a wild-card, too.

No KLM is switching another 787-9 for a dash 10 so they will get 8 instead of 7 dash 10.s..They need more capacity..

Two notes from the latest Boeing update:

- In addition to the Blue Air and Mauritania UFO's disclosed at Paris, Ethiopian has been revealed as a purchaser of x10 more 737 MAX's from last year. This brings their total MAX orders to 30.

- QR would appear to be behind the latest UFO order for x4 77W's. Booked the same day as the UFO x2 748F order, which is believed for QR. Also matches the same number of A350's cancelled by QR in June.

ALC might have taken the open delivery slot from the KLM conversion. One of the 2 new ALC orders is with GE engines and switched back 1 of their previous orders to no engine selection. One of their existing customer could get one earlier then planned.

I find it interesting that even though their most recent deals have all been for the 787-9 they still decided not to convert their open -10 orders to the -9.

Looks like they used A350 delivery delays to ditch four frames without financial penalties and replace them directly with four 77Ws, of which they already have a large fleet. Simply up-sizing, or reducing capital expenditure?

Considering QR was the major launch customer for the A350 and Airbus in RFPs was matching the "cheap" prices Boeing was charging for the 787 at the time, even with the 777-300ER's current "end of life" discounts, I would not be surprised if QR paid as much, if not more, for their four 777-300ERs then they would have for those four A350-900s.

With what appears to be QR's subsequent reversal on their cancellation (via the intervention of the Qatari Emir and PM), this looks like they're adding capacity. Which may imply they feel that their current issues with their neighbors on overflights may soon be over.

Here's the official announcement:

https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_AU/ ... craft.html

Cathay Dragon has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), preparatory to executing formal legal documentation, for the acquisition of 32 Airbus A321neo aircraft. The MOU, signed today between the Cathay Pacific Group and Airbus in Toulouse, France, is valued at approximately HK$31.7 billion at current list prices. It is intended to see Cathay Dragon’s single-aisle fleet replaced and expanded from 2020.

The new aircraft, which are scheduled to be delivered between 2020 and 2023, are intended to replace Cathay Dragon’s existing single-aisle fleet of 23 aircraft, comprising 15 Airbus A320s and eight Airbus A321s.

Is this an NG to MAX conversion?

Looks like it. As of the end of July SunExpress had 32 unfilled 737 orders with 25 737 Max already on order, meaning 7 737NGs were left to be delivered. Looks they they switched those last 7 to the MAX.
