I doubt UA or AA are interested in creating a mini-hub with ORD so close even though it's horrid for weather delays. Personally would love to see DL do something, but just can't see it with DTW so close and their commitment to making CVG a reflection of the market O&D.

UA already has a not yet abandoned focus city at CLE and along with EWR, IAD and ORD, I highly doubt they're going to grow CVG outside of flying to hubs.

"Right now only a limited number of passengers can fly thru CVG on their flights. (Frontier has 1% connecting). CVG will become a fully connectable station. Delta is already a "fully connectable station". Looks like frontier in my eyes. I confidently believe it will be frontier. We will see as tomorrow roles around, but I believe I am correct :D

If it is Frontier, some things might make sense. For instance SJC/MIA are getting new routes on Frontier tomorrow, these could replace CVG-SFO/FLL, which were just dropped. LAX could also be replaced by service to SNA. Looks like GRR/OKC are getting flights, but I don't see CVG being connected to these cities.

Aparently FLL is getting the axe completely from the network, looks like a shift of all routes to MIA that were at FLL.

I was thinking the same thing. So are LAX, SFO, IAH, SAN, and MSP I think those routes. Are they going seasonal or terminating? I assume FLL is but I also assume we will get MIA.

That is A1 and they were only parked there because A14, A18, and A22 were full. A14 was on maintenance due to a bird strike.

It'll be interesting what F9's expansion looks like at CVG (if indeed that's what it is tomorrow). I wonder if there might be some sort of regional feed to CVG from places like CLE, PIT, BUF, and GRR that then connects to a bank of flights to airports such as SJC, SAT, AUS, or MIA. With F9 apparently trimming SFO, LAX, SAN, MSP, IAH among others it's really hard to envision what other airports would be connected through an expansion?

I thinking that these destinations will stop for October, but resume when the connecting operation begins at CVG. If they are adding a hub, I could see many of the seasonal routes (ATL/SAN/MSP/DFW/IAH/TPA/LAX/SFO) working year-round.

I am partly curious to as if they do make CVG a connecting station (and add new destinations), if it is to try to keep WN from expanding as quickly. You would think if F9 can add more flights that it and DL would limit WN's growth options.

Here is the text from the business courior article:

Since ultra-low cost carriers entered the market in 2013, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) hasn’t lost its customer base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. In fact, the number of passengers using Delta is growing, according to CVG officials.

Delta’s local passenger traffic increased by 17 percent in June compared to the same month in 2016. Its overall number of passengers, including connecting traffic, was up 5 percent. The growth comes as low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines entered the market in June, while ultra-low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Airlines, who start with a rock-bottom base fare and add fees for baggage, refreshments and other amenities, continue to grow.

“Those are the best local performance numbers for Delta since July 2011,” said Bobby Spann, CVG’s air service vice president. “The performance of Delta at CVG is extremely strong.”

Spann told CVG’s board on Monday night that he believes the increase is because Delta is using larger jets and has made some scheduling changes to better accommodate business travelers.

While Delta’s share of CVG’s overall pie has shrunk, particularly as it cut flights after a peak of 600 per day in 2005 and shrunk its presence at the airport, the pie itself grew because of the new airlines. Local customers wanted more choices, and, now, they have them.

• Frontier expansion: Speaking of expansion, Frontier Airlines is expected to announce a new set of nonstop flights from CVG on Tuesday afternoon, the Courier has learned. A CVG news release indicated “one of its airline partners” would announce six new nonstop flights.

• United-San Francisco: United recently began direct service to San Francisco from CVG, and Spann said the airline is “extremely happy” with the performance so far.

• Parking: CVG’s 6,000-space ValuPark lot sold out several times this summer, but customers are not being turned away from the $8-per-day lot. When a sellout happens, CVG gives customers a rate-switch ticket, and they are allowed to park in the main terminal garage at the Valu Park price. There are 6,500 spaces in the garage.

• Southwest: During its first month of service in June, Southwest served 20,156 passengers, which Spann said was about what was expected. Anecdotally, the early morning flight from Chicago’s Midway Airport to CVG and the late flight from Midway to CVG have been lightly populated, but that’s because they do not allow passengers to connect to other cities and serve mostly local passengers.

Thinking of logical traffic flows in winter, maybe there'll be SEA/PDX/RNO-CVG flights that can connect to a bank of Florida flights? I could see F9 running those as red eyes into CVG for a 7:30am connecting bank to Florida. It will be certainly interesting to see what they announce for CVG tomorrow!

WN had not so great LF's according to that article, looks like 79%. While it is not bad, especially for their first month of service, it is still peak travel time. I am sure they will do better over time. I think the lack of nonstop destinations hurts them when DL/G4/F9 have many nonstops, while most passengers have to connect on WN.

I will be excited to see what 6 routes Frontier launches tomorrow, however, if they are adding connections, I would assume existing routes must be up-gauged/seasonal routes brought back? I am going to guess CVG-MIA/AUS/IAD/PVD, and if LAX/SFO are being dropped, replacing them with CVG-SJC/ONT, or if LAX/SFO are brought back, also adding two routes from CVG-CLT/RDU/SEA/PDX/ORD/MCI. I think we will see MSP/ATL/DFW/IAH/PHL become year-round if they are adding serious connections, plus increased frequency on the less than daily routes.

So if it is F9, does that mean they're getting gates in B? There can't possibly be enough space left in A for a hub operation.

Not sure, my guess is that we might hear more about this tomorrow. Routes should open between 10:30pm and 12:00am tonight, so we will have an idea how of the flows will operate, which should help figure out how many gates they will need.

To be honest, I am not so sure how this hub flow would work for Frontier. Currently they have 14-15 daily flights, not sure how many more they will get tomorrow, but they would need a lot of gates to make the schedule "fully connectable". With that few flights (I am guessing they will be at 18-20 daily flights), I would think you could only have 1-2 banks maximum (DL only has 3 main banks with 80 daily flights), meaning they would leave a lot of gates empty for a large part of the day.

So 20 daily flights in 2 blocks. Where are they gonna put the 5 frontier planes all at the airport at the same time.

Not sure, maybe they could take over the common use gates, but other than that I don't know. I know they are trying to reopen A23, so that would give them 4 gates besides common-use gates. Even though it was reported CVG would be "fully connectable", perhaps they are just offering some connections, which could probably be done with 4 gates.

The ULCC success at CLE and CVG in the wake of UA and DL downsizing has been remarkable. I don't think PIT even got that much love after US left.

MIA is surprising. AA's loads have been trash, and they've been selling heavily discounted tickets up to day of departure in some cases.

Sigh. Very disappointed that tomorrow won't be about DL. At the same time, I'm glad it wasn't G4.

None of the new routes starting past Nov 1 have been loaded, so far only routes starting in October. Still plenty to load.

I know, I really want to see DL take a stab at F9/G4, but they really seem not to care at this point.

Eh, I'd rather have two airlines with connecting opportunities at one airport than a 5k.

So was MIA it? I'm away from my laptop so I can't really check through F9's routes.

Don't see anything about an announcement on CVG's Twitter. I hope this wasn't a big nothingburger.

There is a press conference this afternoon, so my guess is that they are waiting to release the new routes until then.

I think a bunch of F9's PIT routes, including LAS, were cut for the Winter. I figure we might see CMH-LAS back at some point.
