Re: United Fleet Upgrade Status - 2017

I see that they DID NOT just install the seats only and leave the rest of the cabin as-is (which was a fear of mine) United actually really decked the 767 out in full in Polaris and redid the bulkheads etc. THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS UNITED for the investment. I've been in Polaris twice so far on the 77W and found the window seat to be amazing- no complaints at all. And Channel 9 - super BRAVO for that awesome brand asset.
Now, when will they get this all done and when does EWR get their Polaris lounge and United Clubs renovated?
IMHO: they can see a lot of business come back to United when the experience is consistent.

My guess on the first 763 with Polaris would be a high business route that maybe operates 6 days a week from EWR or IAD since 1 aircraft can do a round trip daily with time to spare for some station maintenance. Also, it wouldn't make sense to run Polaris on a flight something like EWR-LHR if a 763 3 class with F is only an hour away as F pax would probably move to Polaris.
So, my guess is something like EWR or IAD to GVA or ZRH.

It will be interesting to hear what premium fliers from other counties (ones that have top rated airlines) have to say when they fly the new Polaris aircraft! Like Germans, SWISS or British who would have had to fly United because of company contracts and if they are made happy. I can see American Premium fliers say good things as the upgrade across everything is a pretty big leap.
If I was Oscar, I would want all those 767's into LHR from EWR switched RIGHT AWAY! And LHR has a beautiful United Club (EWR, disgusting)

Given the Zodiac Optima 763s and the B/E Diamond 763s have he exact same seat counts in business, Economy Plus, and economy, I'd imagine they're used interchangeably rather than a specific subfleet being dedicated to a specific route. (At least initially, until the Zodiac Optima subfleet has reached a critical mass.)

Re: United Fleet Upgrade Status - 2017

Last night I flew EWR to FRA on a 3 class 772. I upgraded to GLOBAL POLARIS FIRST. I was thrilled I actually got to use Global upgrades vs watching it expire! I used 2 for me and a friend. On United.com the seat was for sale for $11,000 one way! I can't imagine how upset someone would be if they actually paid that for that seat. Sure, it's better than a climb-over business seat and it's roomy, but the rest was no different than J. The menu was basically the same as J, and the aminity kit was white instead of black, but the same contents- and much less inside it than past First Class kits. Although the plane was very clean.
But it's worth noting that the FA's were very nice and provided very good service. They must really not sell many and while they are around, use them for upgrades and perks for GS members.
However: The most interesting thing is that the new POLARIS seat on the 77W, (especially the forward window seat with 3 windows), is better than the old Global First seat (which prior to last night seemed like such a great seat) even though Polaris is probably a bit smaller.
Since it had been a long time since I was on a 3 class United 772, I took a short walk, my gosh, the 2-4-2 business class was so crowded looking with people squeezed in tight, ZERO privacy and no storage...United just can't refit these old birds fast enough!
When we arrived we didn't get a gate, we were parked with busses outside. Next to us was a UA 77W, (I didn't look but I assume it had come from SFO)...anyway, my bet is that those folks had a better ride than I did - even though I had what will probably be my last time in that old Global First seat. And WHEN will UA make a new safety video- I can't stand watching it anymore.
I hope United creates a chart (like the wifi progress pie chart) that shows progress for existing wide body fleet conversions.

I think SFO. It could also be IAD — there have been 77W subs from IAD to LHR and FRA on occasion recently, and maybe even HNL? Apparently they're just kind of floating around for the time being.

2137 did UA 882 NRT-ORD 15JUL, then UA 907 ORD-FRA on 15JUL, then UA 988 FRA-IAD 16JUL, then UA 340 IAD-SFO 16JUL, then UA 408 SFO-IAD 17JUL, then IAD-LHR 17JUL.

Its exciting to see these upgrades on the F class 767s. I'm assuming the two class ones (some of which were very recently upgraded) will be done as well at some point?

We can only hope. It would seem the goal is to reconfigure the three-cabin 767/777s before moving to any other fleets. My guess is the two-cabin sCO 777s will be next as they were the first CO airplanes to get flat beds in 2010. The existing two-cabin 763s, 764s and 787s with Polaris are at least a few years out.

Given there seem to be some 77W's as subs, what are the regularly scheduled 77W flights? And how many 77W's does UA have active in revenue fights out of the initial 14? Thanks!

I CAN SAY WITH EXPERIENCE: the 772's in 3 class configuration now are very dated and even a bit shabby looking. I was just in Global Polaris First (a seat I used to love- although mostly on the 747) and I would have absolutely preferred a new Polaris seat instead. I think we don't put enough value in an aircraft "atmosphere" or interior design. We so often just stick to hard and soft product. But just like a beautifully decorated living room vs an ordinary and dated barely decorated living room, interior design and lighting go a long way to making you feel better. The sooner United gets those old 3 Class birdies switched over, carpets, bulkheads and branded entryway and the Polaris seat the better. Can't happen soon enough- and I bet the 787-10's will be gorgeous inside.

The are ten in active service now. The 11th is ready to start whenever UA decides to say 'GO' ....

Does anyone think UA would ever use a 77W from EWR to GRU, to compete with AA to South America by using a Polaris aircraft? Or will that just wait for a refitted 772 or wait until the 787-10 is delivered?

My guess is that the 77Ws will be kept where their unique operational capabilities are needed and that would be long-haul, high-capacity Pacific for the most part instead of matching an airline seat with a destination. If the market from EWR to GRU is there, the 78J would definitely be the more appropriate plane for the mission than a plane with a >8,000-mile range.

I would love to see a 78J from EWR to anywhere, but they won't see Polaris I assume for a few years.

I'm on a 2 class 767 tomorrow from LIS to EWR, and they look sad inside in comparison

I'm actually pretty sure they should be delivered with Polaris. The only reason new 789 deliveries have come with the old Diamond seats is because there wasn't enough lead time involved. There's been enough lead time for the 78J that it should be receiving the new cabin.

N2142U has just arrived LASONT. Why and how long it will be there I have no idea. This aircraft has yet to carry any paying passengers, but don't really need it for that until a few more 74s go to VCV.

I can't wait to be on a 787-10 (I assume that is what J stands for?) and look down the entire cabin. Should be beautiful. When is the first delivery? It's still quite a while, correct?
When they get them all, and all the 77Ws, and keep their 767s and 772s, that must add up to an enormous amount of wide bodies!?!
Where (on Earth) will they all fly to?

J = 10th letter so 78J yes. UA's first 78J is showing as line # 731.. Their next 789 (due its B1 any day) is LN 591.

Last week SEA opened a placeholder maintenance page for ordering parts for 2138. A maintenance entry to ferry the airplane to SFO was made on July 24. Perhaps they will finish the induction at the SFO maintenance base. We will see how things play out as the day goes on.

United Announced DEN-LHR with a 788 for March 24 through October 26, 2018.

Anyone have a clue where the slot comes from? I looked at next July and the DEN flight is loaded and there is no change posted on any other LHR alights.

EWR-LHR down from 6 to 5 flights during the summer. Not yet reflected in the schedule but that will be the slot used for the DEN flight.

According to this, it's coming from EWR:

I'm still pretty surprised by all of this. I think UA finally woke up and decided that it was worth fighting DY at DEN.

I'm would assume they'll upgauge EWR-LHR as a result of going down to five daily? Typically at least one or two of the flights is operated with a 752, I suppose for this very purpose — to effectively be a place holder for flexibility.

Probably. Right now, EWR-LHR is 5x 763, 1x 752. The 752 arrives at 9h20, with another flight arriving at 9h40.

The schedules next summer still show 6x 763 for now. The DEN-LHR is scheduled to arrive at 9h40, so that's probably the slot it's taking. I would imagine the 9h20 flight will probably at least be a 763.

Didn't EWR-LHR go up to 6x somewhat recently? I think the slot has bounced from 3x IAH to 2x IAH as they briefly loaded (but never flew) a second LAX-LHR. That was cancelled before it was added as a sixth EWR flight. Do I have that right?

And since is the fleet thread, has anyone figured out from where the 788 is positioned and whether or not it'll flow with the DEN-NRT rotation?

I find it somewhat ironic that United has what is probably the nicest club at LHR. Does UA still have the GS booth in the center of the check-in hall? I haven't flown UA to LHR in close to a year. That club (which was a PMUA club) has an amazing Global First section with a great restaurant in the center of a huge glass column that is filled with wine bottles...quite swank! I presume that section of the club will be just for GS members, or a Polaris lounge?

IMHO, Polaris fitted aircraft is really needed on LHR routes for competitive reasons...and from the seat chart and pictures of the first 767 fitted with Polaris, she looks look amazing inside. I love the size of a 767 tube. Like Goldie Locks...it's just right!
The world is missing love, let's use our flights to spread it!

The club opened post-merger in 2014 with the new design standard, though it was always in development as a UA lounge.

Current setup with EWR-LHR

UA: 6 daily; 5x 763, 1x 752
VS: 1 daily; usually an A330
BA: 2 daily; usually 1x 772 and 1x 789. Lately I've been seeing 2x 772

Does UA really need that 757 out of EWR? A quick look of today's seat maps shows a lot of empty seats on all of the flights. Some of the 767s look to be flying almost empty. That 6th slot is not needed and I personally don't think an up gauge on any of the flights is necessary given how empty the current flights are. Take out the 757 and you will still have plenty of free seats remaining.

Like I said in my post further up, I think it's more of a placeholder than anything else. They're essentially slot squatting. I doubt they routinely fill x6 daily EWR-LHR with so much other competition coming from EWR/JFK, but having that extra frequency going to EWR is by far the lowest risk. NYC-LON is obviously very frequency oriented, and it keeps them from trashing yields with too many frequencies from other hubs.

Understand the slot holding, but with flights so closely stacked it is tough.

Just an idea: 63 people on flight 77 (763 2 class with capacity for 214) tonight.
Tomorrow flight 16 (757) and flight 940 (767 3 class) are both looking pretty empty.

I know there is the concept of frequency, but that is a really low yield and I don't think departure times of 20 minutes is really going to make it or break it. Is United really making money on the route with it like that.

Wednesday out of LHR is likely one of the slowest travel days of the week. Clearly they're not running this many flights just to hold onto what are likely some of the most valuable slots in aviation and can't be sold for cash.

I fully expect one of the EWR-LHR 763s to become a 764 especially since sub CO NTA will likely crew DEN-LHR as part of a 6 day pairing (EWR-LHR-DEN-LHR-EWR).

Interesting. How do you think they'll position the aircraft?

DEN is a domestic only base for sub CO so DEN-NRT for example is flown out of the NTA & HOS bases. (Newark intl & Houston language base). So DEN-LHR will have to be flown out of an international base (NTA, HTA,
LAI, SFI, WTA). The 788 likely will come from NRT, IAD or SFO.
