After a fatality involving a Delta tug driver a couple years ago, I know that we were forced (by OSHA, of course) to install seat belts on any remaining ramp equipment that didn't already have it. At my little airline, we already had them on everything. I'm assuming United was subject to the same draconian OSHA knee jerk.
(I'm certainly a fan of seatbelts, of course... just not OSHA!!!)

With the start/stop, hop on/ hop off nature, I bet those don't get used very often. I've never seen from the terminal.

The person had less than 5 months seniority. They blamed it on a training issue since he had not worked a beltloader since the first month.

N121UA: no routing at this time. They have changed the routing on this plane like 3 days in a row. I don't know what is going on.

N121UA is one of the newest, I’m surprised it’s going straight to TUP while older ones are stored in VCV to have a (slight) chance of flying again.

N121UA's flight to TUP is being delayed a few days after talking with someone who's in the know. There are several other airframes that are end of life that were flown to VCV that won't be there for long before the scrappers.

All I think, except the following, which went to TUP:
N171UA
N182UA
N193UA
N194UA
The date for N121UA is still to be announced.

N195UA went to TUP as well.

And then there's N196UA and N198UA that ended up in MHV for the Stratolaunch project (what was left of N198UA was still there when I was at MHV in May).

73G:
N16713 sked to exit MIA 2798/10Nov with slimlines/new F seats
21 of 40 (36 Domestic) complete with 2 or 3 more in mod.

764:
N66057 exited HKG 2810/10Nov with Y crew mod - seat map not shown.
On 763 Polaris, a closet was removed at aft right to replace 2 seats removed to add 4 E+/crew seats on aft left. I wonder how the 764 will accomplish crew seats as there is no closet to remove. Will seat pitch go to 30 on left rear window pairs to gain enough for crew seats at 40" pitch or will a pair of seats be lost? We'll see when N66057 is sked for revenue service. Right now there is only one 764 seat map on united.com.

I wonder why that RAM air inlet that's up for auction has a Tulip on it? First because it would have been painted over long ago, and second: why put a logo on a RAM air inlet in the first place? I wonder if this is off a recently retired 744 or if it's from an old one from the desert (perhaps a Battleship livery 747?)

Another thread topic today is about UA purchasing 763's being retired by HA and returned to the lessor. Any merit to this ?

Given the routes most of the HA 67's flew the should have decently low cycles on them.

Have seen many hits by beltloaders, catering trucks, service trucks and tugs. Had one in MCO years ago as the ramper was pulling up to the plane, the gas pedal supposedly stuck. The seat was bent back and broken, and part of the beltloader cut a slice right through the belly. The ramper lived.

They look good.

There are detailed internal company photographs taken for repair confirmations. They are taken when a incident occurs.

Most all ground equipment have seatbelts installed, and must be worn or disciplinary actions could be taken. Even golf carts have seatbelts that are to be worn.

Pretty far fetched to me. I think the deal is likely FedEx, UPS or Air Force, but I'm sure Boeing would offer a great deal to UA, just don't think United would want more 767's. Since UA has been scaling back on Europe, and GUM, where would they possibly want to put new 763's?

And UA is not nearly as enamored with 752's for transatlantic flights as CO was. Different environment, different circumstances, but none the less, I think UA would replace more 752 routes if they had more 763's. Whether it makes sense to do so, when they have to purchase the planes to achieve it, we shall see.

Like you say, different environment and circumstances. CAL didn’t have enough 767’s, so they used the 757’s. UAL had the 767’s so there wasn’t a need to use 757’s from JFK/IAD.

The 757 to Europe certainly works in certain markets, while the 767 is better suited for others. Not all 757 markets can work with the extra capacity, while others can benefit with what a 767 upgauge would bring. And certainly the 767 eliminates the range issues the 757 had in some markets, TXL for example. Using IAD-LHR as an example currently UAL runs a 757 on the daylight flight, a three class 777 on the early evening flight, and a two class 787 on the late evening departure. A revenue management dream by being able to put the “right” plane at the right time.

For EWR and ORD a big concern is the gate issue as the 767 wingspan (assuming both have winglets) is almost 33 feet wider.

First class job by UA on the 747 sendoff. Hub flights, HNL flight, videos, auction, etc. all great stuff.

On the 767's, do you think the units in discussion could be the subfleet of a new PS offering? With 15 dedicated units on the PS route + some 777 domestics added in, it seems probable.

Keep in mind any new 767s are not intended to increase the fleet (at least I don’t think so) but to REPLACE the older, extremely maintaince prone, therefore highly unreliable, older craft in service. Some additional capacity could prove beneficial so it could well be not a 1:1 replacement however.

Wonder if they’d get these HA 763s before they upgrade the last of the older 763s to Polaris. Would let them send a few older birds directly to retirement.

"SFO doesn't have the room to store a B747. There's No public access"

How about the old World/UA 747 hangar at OAK? A UA Museum?
Probably room in there for a 747, and 3-4 smaller ex-UA aircraft??
Plenty of retired UA folks to run it.
Delta can do it successfully (in ATL), why not UA?

When we talk about HA 763's, are we referring to the 3 stored non-ER 763's HA has? If so, are these non ER's in the way UA's were, simply because they were not rated correctly, and sorted out with paperwork? Or are these shorter range ones that UA would have to use for domestic/HI routes?

OAK still feels like an odd place to put it. ORD feels like the right place since it has been UA's HQ for so long, though there would be scads of space for a museum at DEN. It's too bad there isn't one already, though I hope there is by the time they start retiring 777s or when 777s become a thing of the past decades down the line. UA put so much design input into the 777 that it would be a shame if they didn't at least put N777UA somewhere special.

Send the 744 to IAD, add it to the The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

They definitely don't have room for it. It would be nice if United had their own version of the Delta Flight Museum. They certainly have enough history to justify it.

There should be a 747 saved.

And I have a rough time believing every single one in VCV is destined to be scrapped in TUP. Even the 97-2000 builds?

And I have a 5x7' 3D brass route map of Continental's from Stapleton, that I would very much like to donate to such a museum. I tried to offer it to the Smithsonian, but got no reply.

Ultimately it will totally depend if there are other takers for any of them. If none, then their fate will be decided by whoever actually owns them.

Obviously not. If the planes in VCV are going to be scrapped, it’ll happen in VCV.

No we are not. We are talking about currently operated HA 763ERs which are getting retired next year. LN 850-898. So young frames.

763 (2-class):
N674UA exited SFO 2825/12Nov

763 (3-class):
N656UA scheduled to enter HKG 2819/13Nov for Polaris
