I believe they don't plan on starting the 772 retrofits until next year and the 763s were put on hold until UA finishes reviewing its widebody fleet plan. Might hear something about that on the upcoming earnings conference call.

I have read all the threads about UA studying the 767 replacement and have yet to announce anything- other than what they won't do: no A330's, no 788. I assume the A321 can't replace a 767, but a new Boeing twin MoM could and that UA likes what they have seen on paper. But any true 767 replacement is FAR away time wise no matter what. They have 51 767's doing a lot of hard work, I have flown in the Polaris seat once, I thought it was great and spectacular vs the current diamond seat. Interiors as well.

I just cannot imagine 7+ more years in the old seat when by the end of 2018/2019 all 777's and A350's and 787's have Polaris- those 767's would be worse than an eyesore carrying millions of pax - especially up front and still many years away from replacement!

Then you've got no 757 replacement either, for probably the same amount of time???

Which is why the 767s are first in line for upgrades. I just flew this weekend on the 3 class 763 to LHR in Y, and it was comfortable enough, but the 80s bins and tiny movie screens on a loop were rough. The streaming worked great, but without power, I didn't dare use it.

The issue I see is that you could probably make a good 757 replacement, but the fir jump up to two aisles is the least efficient floor space possible with 3.5 seats per aisle, it makes the plane so much heavier for few extra seats. COs 762s actually sat fewer people than the 752, albeit with more J seats a longer range. But they regretted them immediately. It is possible with a 5000 ish range something in this size could replace most of UAs 752 and 763 routes, but I still don't think it will be their most efficient plane.

Question, will ALL the 77W's as they are delivered be put on the SFO/EWR route on trial runs, before they are delayed on their international missions? Or once these first handful have been flown trans-con will the rest just be deployed on international routes right away?

FYI: I just flew it RT in Polaris and I was very impressed and thrilled with the seat. It is lightyears ahead of the current diamond seat in many ways. There is also NOTHING like a brand new airplane with "new airplane" smell!

I don't know the number I want to say 7? landings have to complete on domestic flights before a new aircraft can be deployed on ETOPS routes. So every new 77W will most likely do the SFO - EWR run until that number is reached. With that said, if the SFO - EWR aircraft is being used to continue to TLV, then they will need to run an ETOPS bird on the route. So you may see the 77W get subbed on a 777 - 200 flight to get the landings.

Same reason when UA was getting 787s you would see them flying one offs from LAX - DEN and SFO - ORD.

NK cancelled the deal as part of their fleet growth plans.

UA is still shopping around for opportunistic used aircraft acquisitions.

Many thanks for this update and amazingly 3 of Frontier's mid-life 319's have been scrapped while 3 others have been returned to lessors for other carriers. The a/c of Frontier never fare well with short lives as we saw with all 11 of the 318's scrapped. Tough to figure out the low capacity Airbus market but would not think UA should have any trouble finding good used 319's.

"Purchased 12 currently operated Boeing 737NG aircraft previously leased to the company."

Interesting. Could it be 73Gs who have diminished resale value and were cheaper to own?

I know I flew on the third ever revenue flight for the 7th 788 in 2013. The plane flew IAH-DEN-NRT, before we flew home NRT-LAX. It was an amazing experience, but the plane was still having several glitches with the IFE and maps.

But at what price? Any airline has to consider the lease or purchase costs. When the owners/lessors know that a company is looking for a certain aircraft model, they'll be less inclined to offer a discount on those aircraft, short of a real supply glut.

Well part of it is UA is looking for aircraft with IAE engines so the F9 birds never really had much of a shot at coming to UA. I'm not actually sure how many IAE powered aircraft are on the second hand market at this point but I would bet it's not a huge number.

With the end of the quarter UA has updated its internal fleet plan for the rest of the year. Mainline plans are unchanged, however there are some changes to the UAX fleets....

E7W- expect 33 deliveries by year end (down by 2)
CR7- expect 14 retirements (2 less than expected)
E145- expect 24 retirements (5 more than expected)
CR2- instead of 12 less in fleet, now expected to gain 5 frames by year end (likely Air Wisconsin frames coming online)

As for the 12 recently purchased 737NG's, they were a mix of 73G and 738 that had come off lease and were purchased from the lessor.

I just flew RT EWR/SFO on the 77W in Polaris...they cannot refit the rest of the 772s, 767s, 787s fast enough...and given the fact that there is nothing like a brand new airplane the A350 should be great too! It is a GIANT leap in hard product design, the bed is indeed far better as well as the all aside access. Perhaps it's not be the most luxurious seat in the sky, but it's pretty darn good and finally the cabin is both branded and looks contemporary vs plain solid blue. I read that they are having trouble getting delivery of the Polaris seats, and I hope that is NOT a long term problem.

It also had "From the Flight Deck" (or Channel 9) on, with a new "Flight Map" design, both were an extra special treat that I was NOT expecting.

Reading through the 10K really quickly it looks like it was an even mix of NGs....6 73G and 6 738s were purchased off lease.

It seems to make sense that ther are onbly 6 73Gs shown as leased on Planespotters.net and all taken in 1998.
There are a ton of leased 738s, but the first 6 were taken in 1998 as well. 210,211,213,220,223,225.

20 year leases then probably coming due. Probably safe to assume UA will be buying out the leases on other 738s over the next few years.

Actually, it appears Planespotters.net has already updated the 12 aircraft that were leased and now show them as owned. The ones you listed above, as far as I know, are still on lease from GECAS.

It's been in SEA Tech ops for two-ish weeks so it was inducted there. It's next flight should be with paying passengers. Emphasis on the "should". :crossfingers:

Deliveries of 777-300ers will continue through the year. All Boeing 747-400s will also be retired by the end of 2017 :(. A350's also to be received in the next couple of years. More E175's, 737s. Also phasing out some 757s :(. Considering A321 NEO as 757 replacement.

After this week's earnings report, I'm still surprised they haven't said anything about the A350s yet. It's pretty clear they're being deferred, but until when, and are any of them going to be swapped out with other models?

Or maybe they're waiting to see how this summer's high season performs before they assess upcoming international demand in order to complete the fleet review?

Apparently the A350 Sim is on an indefinite hold. Last I heard it was being pushed back to next year sometime now an indefinite hold. UA doesn't really need the A350 anyway we can always take some second hand 77Ws.

No real point. I was just writing what I heard from my friend who flies the 772 at UAL. He told me all that awhile ago. Thanks for the warm welcome!

I am going to be riding on a 752 this summer to Edinburgh. I don't know what aircraft will replace that route after the 752's are gone. United is going to have to order A321 NEO's or put 767's. The 757 was a good plane.

EWR-EDI could handle a 763 - it's currently 2x daily 752s in the summer. However, I believe it's the P.S. 752s that fly SFO-EWR, SFO-BOS, and LAX-EWR that are going to be retiring. The ex-CO 752s that fly international routes from EWR should be around for a while longer.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.
