With a 5/24 start date, that jives with the 744 fleet retirement schedule posted in reply #298. Assuming we'll largely see the 77W fleet taking over 744 routes from this point on, it seems safe to say we won't see them doing too much additional flying before fall. SFO-EWR/EWR-SFO, EWR-TLV, SFO-NRT, and SFO-HKG, with SFO-TPE added in late July. That would require 6-7 frames on property by June, and 8-9 by late July.

I wouldn't necessarily count on the 777W being a direct one for one 747 replacement based on routes. UA was handcuffed with the 747 on which routes they could fly. Now they have more flexibility. They can now use the plane to match seasonal demand anywhere in the system.

UA does have six 77Ws now... kinda. Three are flying, one should be exiting 'induction' in next few days, two more have been 'delivered'.. on paper anyway.... awaiting their turns at induction.

Yes, theoretically UA could use them wherever they want throughout the system, but practically speaking it's a relatively small subfleet and it will mostly operate out of 1-2 hubs (one being SFO). It's definitely possible that a route like SFO-PVG will go from the current 1x 744 + 1x 788 to 2x 789 rather than directly swapping in a 77W for the 744, but I also think we'll see a decent number of 1 to 1 replacements, at least initially.

Interesting to see these becoming more of a SFO based fleet with the 744 replacement and still nothing mentioned about utilization of these on the EWR- Eastern Asia routes. One would think these frames would be a good fit for United there.

Indeed. I was thinking no Cs or Keys until all the bits and pieces where in place. Boeing must want the :dollarsign: :twocents: sooner and then give free room and board while waiting.

So far all 77Ws have used only C108 or C110 at EWR. At IAH I only know for certain C7, C14 and D gates for 77W.
ORD only B16 so far.

Actually, ORD has C10, C29, B16 & B17 that are 77W capable

The INT MRO did go out of business.
I just checked the non-slimlined 738 and 739 fleet and none are in mod.
73Gs are in MCO, MIA, IAH and HOU if that's a clue on slimline work.

I keep checking on N892UA for activity, but nothing. It took 5 months on first and 3 months on #2 and #3 for "induction". 892/3/4 are all past 3 months, but maybe they are being worked on together which might delay completion. Hopefully all 3 will be completed soon as they arrived in LCQ 10 days apart in early/mid December.

Huh? The ex-CZ ships will barely be retrofitted by then at the rate they're being completed. They might "start" leaving the fleet in 2020 but hopefully they won't dump the whole fleet in a short period like they did with the 733s and leave the domestic fleet with a huge capacity hole. Do the new F-seats recently installed in the Airbus fleet fit in a Boeing?

How's that first 767 with Polaris being fitted going?

I still wonder if they (the 767 and 772's) will get the "full treatment" meaning: carpets, new bulkheads, new economy seats and whatever else the 77W's are getting.

With another round of life extension program approved by the board last year, the fleet will operate "well beyond 2025" per recent Flight Ops note.

Why would they paint only a few of their new 77W's in the wavy livery and not the whole lot? Also, I thought the wavy livery was to call attention to their large fleet of 787's which are NEW technology aircraft. I could see them using the wavy livery on the A350 should they ever arrive...although I have read that the wavy livery was also paying some sort of homage to Boeing.

For me, the wavy livery works on the more wavy lines of the 787 itself, but a 777 or 767 with it's very straight lines wouldn't sport it as nicely.

I know TLV is slated to get one 77W on it. I really thought we would see a few more 77W routes out of EWR. India, Japan, China are all areas where the extra lift from the 77W would really pay off over the 772ERs.

It's a different wavy livery than the 787. It's more along the lines of the Boeing house colors to celebrate partnership with Boeing and the 1,500th 777 from what I've been told.

Not East Asia, but one of the two EWR-TLV flights will be on the 77W soon...

I know TLV is slated to get one 77W on it. I really thought we would see a few more 77W routes out of EWR. India, Japan, China are all areas where the extra lift from the 77W would really pay off over the 772ERs.

More are coming. EWR-HKG is being announced soon.

The EWR-HKG route makes perfect sense. Hopefully we will see either Tokyo, Shanghai, or Beijing go that way as well.

Hypothetical scenario
Three 77Ws are in short term storage (36-38) at PAE. 39 come back from PDX looking all fancy in its new paint, just as a new set of Polaris seats show up in Boeing's mailbox. Do they install on 39 and tell UA to come get or do they take the tarp off 36 and pull it out of the storage shed and put 39 in its place?

It's a different wavy livery than the 787. It's more along the lines of the Boeing house colors to celebrate partnership with Boeing and the 1,500th 777 from what I've been told.

I saw on the blog that #13 is the 1,500th 777 so surely that will be in a separate livery. Amazing that Boeing sold 1,500 of them!
Will #14 will be in Star Alliance colors?

Any idea how many man-hours it takes to get these Chinese birds ready for revenue service once they arrive on US soil? 4 months seems like a long time to get a plane that flew across the Pacific to get to the US before it's ready to go into revenue service with UA. I sure hope UA got a screamin' deal on these planes!

Hopefully that's because of mainland aircraft rotating through rather than a drawdown of GUM operations.

Since 2014, United has canned GUM-CNS/ICN/HIJ/KIJ/OKJ/OKA and HKG-SGN while not adding much more than PVG and some additional frequencies in the Micronesia network. If I had to guess, I'd wager UA is ending mainline service on NRT-ICN, perhaps cutting some more Japan (SDJ, CTS, FUK) and possibly reducing HKG frequency. GUM's viability as a hub for Japan's beach market is diminishing and is subject to more competition (both local and nonstop on erstwhile connecting itineraries). With better reliability, it would seem that these 737s are redundant.

Its planned as a permanent withdrawal of 3 frames from the GUM hub. Crew displacements will begin in June.

Ending NRT-ICN-NRT is certainly a logical possibility as its hardly efficient crew or aircraft utilization since UA previously cut the overnight ICN-GUM-ICN segments.
