United has purchased 4 new 737-800SFP aircraft from Boeing which are set to be delivered starting in August of 2017. These planes will undergo induction and post-delivery modification at MIA. During this modification they will be installed with Scimitar Winglets and the LiveTV KA WiFi System. These aircraft will induct into the fleet as 73Q aircraft. These aircraft are equipped with a number of new features as explained below.
The first aircraft will be numbered 539 with registration number N77539. Subsequent planes will number sequentially, with nose numbers 540-542. The registration numbers are N78540, N79541 and N77542, respectively.

Cabin:
Interior consistent with new delivery 777-300ER Polaris.
No monitors installed on seats. WiFi will be installed.
“Space Bins” (Close to 1-to-1 bag to passenger ratio)
Additional Center Overhead Storage Compartments.
Blue leather B/E Pinnacle seats in Economy and Economy Plus.
New “Space Bins” bags should now be stored vertically for optimum space utilization.
New space bins have different anchor points for the class dividers.
Aircraft lavatories will be equipped with the lavatory bi-fold door.
G4B galley Compartment 402 (aft RHS) is for miscellaneous stowage, and will not have a trash can / waste container installed (container will not fit by design).
Additional observer seat installed.
Additional Oxygen mask installed.
New style Oxygen mask installed (full face mask).

Oxygen:
These planes are equipped with an oxygen service port rather than replaceable oxygen bottles.

I think there is a 772 in HK right now for the mod....I could be wrong though.

N784UA is there, but shows Mx only, no mod. I presume the Polaris is custom built, more or less, for each aircraft type. Manufacturing would be focused on the 767 exclusively for the time being?

I hope you're right. I know Zodiac was backed up when they had to produce for 14 77W's all at once, and with the next 4 not coming for a few months, hopefully doing one or two 767 at a time takes the pressure off of production.

I don’t see the pattern of triangles on the bulkhead (the triangles made from the negative space around the “Globe-n-box”) which I swear I saw in a video once?

Have some pictures, will post later. The 'triangles' are the square with the globe inside, just in miniature.

Interesting they haven’t assigned the N#/Ship# for these yet. Guess they’re trying to decide rather to fit them into the existing 0/39xx sequence (considering additional 789/10 orders in future) or start another.
77W
Boeing is only six, eight, twelve frames from starting FA on the first three... so they should be ready for delivery well before 3rd quarter (assuming no Polaris issues this time.)

We have Engineering (Test) Pilots. Why? Because they Test Airplanes coming out of Maintenance, Engine Changes, New Aircraft per-delivery Test Flights, etc. They also have multiple Aircraft ratings, and fly under a different FAR. They are part of UA Engineering, and are represented by the IAM.

They are UA employees. So yes in a sense, they are UA Pilots. But they do not fly any revenue trips.

Most of them are retired line pilots... many beyond the age limit, and unlike line pilots, are allowed to fly more than one aircraft type.

The 737MAXs will be a nice addition. Cockpit is getting more modern. The MAX 9 / 10 should be less tipsy than the -900ER....

Always liked the 707,727,737 nose and still like the profile better.....

I hope so. -900s arriving with tailtip warnings are required to wait until the tail stand is in place before the jet bridge can be moved to the aircraft. Worse is if no tail stand, then aft bin/pit must be downloaded first before letting passengers off.

Nice to see the new bulkheads on the 737s a few years after the first renderings. It's strange to me that United is still taking delivery of the old-style F seats with the now-superseded seat covers. At the very least, I'd expect to see the same color seat covers as in the Airbus fleet as well as some 73Gs. We aren't talking about a long-lead item, either.

I'm expecting the Polaris seats in the last 4 789s to have the same covers as the existing seats, too (in other words, different from the 77W).

The last four 789s won’t have Polaris... the 7810s will however.

That exit will not be activated on the Max9 as there is no need. Most likely not on the MAX10 either... but don’t know with any certainty.

I know they'll be configured the same as the existing 789s, but I am curious if the J seats (let's call them BF for clarity...) will have the old BF covers or will come with Polaris-style seat covers.

I get the long lead times for seating units, but I see no reason why seat covers should not be consistent across the fleet. It's just an appearance and attention-to-detail thing, IMO.

Hey All-

One thing I am trying to grasp and haven't seen an announcement, maybe there wasn't one? Regarding the standardizing of our fleet at United.

I mean basically...we are all over the place on all variants of the 737, 7/8/9. Each 737 within a fleet, -800, or -900 is different in itself too. We are severely lacking on consistency at United.

I am understanding that...we are trying to move to this type of seat capacity....

737-700 126 Seat Capacity
737-800 160 Seat Capacity
737-900 179 Seat Capacity

Is this correct? Why aren't the 738, 739 getting new F Class along with the 737-700 and 757-300 or is that coming next?

Additionally, Direct TV, is that being removed in 2020, when the contract ends? Making all narrowbody aircraft become TV-Less and PED?

Finally...ANY chance of a refit interior to match what Delta and American are doing? New oversized bulkheads for our older 737-800 and 737-900? Mood lighting on the older aircraft, A319/320? Finally...USB outlets in every seat on every aircraft if not at least in all E+ Seats?

It is so inconsistent and flying these planes, and as an avgeek even I don't know what I am about to be on.

I flew the E175 every week for work at UA, and was more frustrated at the lack of USB even in E+ cabins on the E175, and the lack of USB period on any UAX Flight, 2 Class Cabin or otherwise.

Would be nice to see a more consistent product across the fleet, and perhaps a bit more like DL does. Free Drink and a snack on all E+ Seats. That would be a huge improvement on the customer service side.

So any news or information on an across the board consistency with our fleet in the future?

Thanks,

Alex

HAHAHA Oops! Worded wrong!

I meant those new overhead bins that have expanded sizes to accommodate larger bins. Been on a few older 737-800's that don't have them, so it'd be nice to see a consistency between all the 737's.

Changing to space bins will be a big deal.. Of 329 737NGs, only 17 have space bins at this time. That's 312 to go if the mod is pursued.

Regarding In Seat Power, I believe UA has 120volt and don't recall seeing any USB plugs. Laptops need a 120Volt plug and most people have a 120V plug that fits a USB for different devices, which need from 3 to 18 Volts of USB power.
Passenger plugs should convert to the right power needed for their devices. Otherwise, would 3 volts be installed by default, meaning a really slow charge for an ipad or other devices. My only issue with ISP is that the outlets are black - if white they'd be easier to see. I have to use a flashlight to find the right slot. Plugs on the seat back in front would be easier.

I too fail to understand why United goes halfway with some of their refurbs. For example, on the 319/320 fleet, they did a really nice job with the F class cabin, coach seats, and carpets. It almost looks like a brand new plane. Then you go in the bathrooms and the lighting and walls are circa 1993. Why not just finish the job!

Seems I've been on a lot more then 17 that have the "Space Bins"...unless I am thinking of something entirely different...The ones I am thinking of are the Boeing Sky Interior and overhead bins on the 737-900's...is that the Space Bins you're thinking of?

It just dawned on me that ISP means In Seat Power which is the outlets you're describing. USB wouldn't be needed if we do provide ISP.

Now I am going to find a list that shows how many aircraft have ISP..and ISP means from Forward to Aft, every single seat or select seats?

Thanks for the explanation, and I agree the black ones are so hard to find on board. They need to really be displayed!

737 NGs have 3 bin types:

Regular bins on the older aircraft that have doors like the Airbuses.

Sky interior pivot bins.

Sky interior space bins.

There's a photo illustrating the difference between the two sky interior options in this gallery: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/737max/space-bins/

Sky began with last delivery in 2010, Space Bins began early 2016
738: 4 Sky (#3528-3531),
739: 98 Sky (#3445-3478, 3801-3849 & 3880-3894), 2016 deliveries
738: 11 Sky/Space Bins (#3532-3542)
739: 6 Sky/Space Bins (#3895-3899 & 3479)
73G: no sky or space bins
Total NGs, 329
Sky 102, Sky with Space Bins 17
It looks like the sky interior units could be retrofitted easier than older version. That being said, it looks like new bins and slightly shorter sidewalls.

That's what I am thinking! Thanks!

I would love to see that go fleet wide on all the 737 Variants.

I believe DL and AA were redoing their overhead bins (could be totally mistaken) for their Airbus or perhaps not...

Thanks so much for that information!

I am asking because I am flying to ITO for work for UA, and I am showing 4 737-800's and all I think of is "Long flight, no extra size bins, no ISP, no TV...etc"

Any idea as I had been asking earlier if United will further enhance and re do all the 737's with those new bins, whether it is the Sky or Space ones? In addition to hopefully adding ISP in all aircraft of the 737?

ITO will be a UGE station, unless you're just working there on a special assignment.

Hi...I don’t understand! What is a 737-800SFP? Are these 4 737s some kind of sub-type? How are these 4 different? And are they getting “Polaris” upfront or the new domestic F seat? Or the current F seat?

I was under the impression that all 737s would get the same interior as the Airbus fleet (eventually) and all new 737 deliveries would be getting the full treatment, new F seat with the articulating reclining and at seat storage?
Thanks!

SFP is Short Field Performance. It's offered on 738s and standard on 739ER.
From a thread a while ago. Program was launched in 2006.
*Modified Leading Edge
*2 position (deployable) tail skid
*Additional travel on spoilers
Provides 738 with performance of a 73G.
UA's 738s starting in 2008 (about 35) have the SFP package installed. Seems they are routed quite frequently to Hawaii, on the 4pm SFO-OGG flight.
To my knowledge only the 73G and 753s will be getting new F seats that the 319/320 have.

Most 738s have DirectTV so overwater you get 8 or 9 different moves to pick from...the few 738s that don't have DTV have streaming video installed.

All 738s have power ports in F and Y+ (on that note all UA 737s have power in F/Y+ with the 73Es also having power in Y.)

11 738s have the Sky interior with space bins (larger pivot bins)
4 738s have the Sky interior with pivot bins
126 738s have Boeings' Signature interior with shelf bins

There are no public plans to retrofit the 737 fleet with sky bins.

The United Engineering Test Crews. Who did you think? We don't contract that out and Line ALPA Crews can't be assigned to fly them in a nromal event.
I'll bet they really could but they can't be tasked to do anything that's not in their normal course of events AND the airplane requires a normal maintenance release.
A Ferry Relaase might NOT have such a stipulation. So a line crew would be prohibited from having to fly the airplane even though they might be fully capable to fly the airplane..

also, you might see a very limited flight number for a Ferry/ Test flight, The assigned flight numbers for those flights can ONLY be assigend to a FEW flights and they're usually a Pain in the BUTT to assign. Once that flight number is assigned, there can BE no follow on flight number assigned to that airplane!! Not even when the test flight is good and the airplane is ready for revenue service.. That Flight number has to be erased.

Neither of your profiles nor signature lines say you're United employees... I can guess, but I don't really know who either of you are speaking on behalf of when you say "our." Is "our" United? An airplane services company? A purchaser? A bank with a lien? Unless you explain what group you belong to, a relative term like "our" isn't helpful in a public forum like Airliners.net.

I believe he works for United Ground Express. Many of us who actually work for United mainline don't really consider them part of the family since they are undercutting our own union employees.
