(Playing Copy Cat) DL @ SEA 7/13/17

Fri Dec 30, 2016 12:35 am

I loved the post about DL in BOS next summer so I thought it would be fun to see what SEA will look like.

I may of missed a couple, but I'm counting 152 departures on this Thursday. Granted it is 7 months out.

I am really surprised about PVG/NRT only being a 763? HU and NH only competition on these flights.

If you're counting joint ventures -

SEA-LHR: 789 (operated by VS)

- 7x daily to PDX- Wow!! That's a TON of daily passengers between those two cities when you factor in the 27x daily flights on AS/QX that day. 2,700 daily passengers each way, give or take.
- 7x daily to MSP- This is also impressive. I wonder why this is such a busy route compared to say, DTW-SEA?

6 daily CR7s to YYJ? That's more capacity than I was expecting.

Thanks for compiling this list!

I love the 767 flatbed on the jfk-sea route. Makes for a very easy upgrade as a Diamond. Tough for the competitor to beat that.

So, it looks like Delta Air Lines is here to stay, in Seattle that is. :D :D :D

Are BZN and BIL still around? How about YYJ and some of the other routes announced last summer (2015) or so? I remember that being a big deal to a bunch of people when I was at QX.

Interesting that Delta's entire SEA TPAC network (aside from HKG) is operated by 763ER. Seems the hub still needs time to develop.

Like the poster mentioned, his analysis was done 7 months out. I would imagine there will be some changes between now and then. I would say that SEA-NRT will switch to 777-200ER and maybe 747-400. I can see ICN-SEA changing back to A333.

Maybe VX will move from Concourse B to C or D. That'll free up another gate for DL.

Same as SEA - GEG. It is to feed all the flights in and out of SEA.

A bit off subject but seems like those 787's would have almost been a plug n play option for some of the SEA international routes? :scratchchin:

Probably Asian connections. More nonstop flights to Asia from DTW than MSP so MSP passengers go through SEA.

I doubt the DL 744 ever makes it back to SEA on a regular basis. The small gauge on TPAC routes is indicative of a hub (and market) which still needs to mature.

Last I checked other than AS, none of those airlines have a hub at SEA. Heck, until a few years ago, neither did Delta and the DL haters all said the DL build up wouldn't last. Look at that list, pretty well stacked if you ask me

How so? They weren't scheduled to be delivered until 2020-2022 The 76Ts Delta currently flies on these TPAC routes have plenty of life left, with fully refurbished interiors nose to tail, and 17.9" wide seats in Y. I'd rather have a 767 instead of a 787 with 9 across in Y.

Not that it operates on this particular date, but Delta will also have 1x/weekly (Saturday only) CR7 service to JAC, BZN and SUN in July 2017.

I expect that it is more about MSP's role as a domestic hub than SEA's role as an Asian gateway. In other words, I believe there are many more SEA-MSP-(eastern USA) connections than MSP-SEA-(Asia) connections.
For comparison, MSP-SFO and MSP-PDX are also 7x on that date. So it really seems to be about the MSP hub and beyond-MSP connections.

Well since the OP never mentioned comparing product, and you never mentioned AS or hub competition, I guess we were left to wonder.......

IFE is hugely over-rated and I doubt many people choose an airline based on that.

Maybe on their first flight on an airline.....not on their second or later especially in coach. There is a reason why airlines spend big bucks on IFE installs....they have done the math.

Based on my experience, I see more pax using personal devices than airline supplied IFE. To each his own I guess.

But, but, DL had to cancel a flight because of bad weather in JNU! OMGLOLZ!!!!!

Serious side note...DL had 90+% load factors to JNU last summer on a 738. Would be cool to see them send the 757 back to town again, especially since the airport bought a new jetway to accommodate DL's 757 back in 2013.

I've never really paid attention to this until flying on a refurbished DL A319 a couple weeks ago. I walked to the back of the plane to stretch my legs and was tripping out because hardly anyone was interacting with each other because their eyes were glued to the seatback PTV's. Only a few people were looking at their personal devices.

 Great post, very interesting to see the growth and how the SEA hub is shaping up!

Thanks it was fun to do.

I understand I missed a few but that is why I picked a Thursday and stated I'd miss some.

I guess the one thing I may research next is the available number of seats. Yes AS still has more daily flights, but all on 737's. The smallest a/c on this list from DL is a 738. Of course there are the CR7's and E75's from Skywest.

Yeah, I get that. I tend to bring my own entertainment because when I do look through the offerings by the airlines, I find my personal devices more interesting. It doesn't help wh your seat has a non-working IFE, which I've had twice in the past few months.

Its understandable how upset people get when DL cancels a flight when it doesn't happen on a regular basis to begin with. So when it does, it makes people crazy!!

Is SEA shaping up to be mostly Delta Connection operated by Skywest? I know they are receiving a lot of E175s. Does Skywest have better operational performance than Compass? I've heard Compass has struggled with crew resources since starting operations on the West Coast.

I think you'll see a healthy mix of some widebody, plenty of mainline narrowbody, including plenty of 717s and CS100s, and plenty of regional jets.

I suspect the 717's will be gone once the CS100's arrive.

My point wasn't SEA is skewing towards being a regional hub void of mainline, but rather the SEA connection operation itself, and wether it will remain split or become more centralized on one connection partner. I know Delta seems to like and use a mixture of connection carriers, but on the west coast, and for years, Skywest has been the primary DLC operator.

JNU gets a daily 737-800.

Its understandable how upset people get when DL cancels a flight when it doesn't happen on a regular basis to begin with. So when it does, it makes people crazy!!

Not it was in the winter when JNU was being operated by OO and was being canceled all the time...

I think it depends on the season. During the off-peak months, SEA sees a lot of CRJ's and E-175's. But Spring to Summer, a lot of those regional jets become mainline. Many of the NW markets do not require mainline equipment to be sufficient. But in the beginning, SEA had a LOT of RJ's...and many of them became mainline as some of those markets matured. I was hoping for a much higher 717 presence at SEA...maybe with a little MD-80 and MD-90 activity thrown in.

At some point, assuming gate space can be had, I'd think DL will want to add some mainline service to non-hubs east of the Rockies. ORD and DFW come to mind, even if it's a single daily to connect with TPAC.

It was last winter that DL sent in OO for daily operations. There may have been a few canx flights inbound due to wx however the issue was that the OO flights could not take off in the morning. They couldn't fly down the channel and with the winds dictating a Rwy 8 departure the mountains on Douglas Island were not visible due to clouds.

It wasn't until DL changed to mainline and less flights during the week in the winter months that operations got better however by then the damage was done with their reputation.
