MH370: New Search Area Identified, High Probability Wreckage can be found

Tue Dec 20, 2016 9:09 am

EXPERTS involved in the search for MH370 have identified a new 25,000 sq km area that has a high probability of containing the wreckage and they believe needs searching.

Though the new area has been identified the Australian Transport Minister says new search area is not specific enough

Australian Transport Minister Darren Chester has dampened hopes of extending the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 to a new 25,000 sq. km search zone identified by international experts as having a high probability of containing the wreckage.

Mr Chester's view that the new search area is not specific enough puts him at odds with the experts' conclusion that the location north-east of the existing search zone needs investigating.

The Malaysian government needs to step up to fund the new search for
the sake of the victims families.

It's my understanding that Malaysia *has* been paying all the time up till now. Australia have stumped up a generous share - larger than they had to I think - but there seems to a be an incorrect consensus that Malaysia isn't doing it's bit.

It is.

Considering all the posturing, the number of citizens involved and their wealth and power, if anyone isn't pulling their weight I would say China could be doing more. I know they provided one ship for a while but as far as I know they haven't contributed nearly as much funding as Malaysia and Australia.

"High probability" or "higher probability than the last zone?"

25,000 square kilometers is on the one hand a huge area to search - an additional 40% more than the underwater area searched so far by four ships rotating through operations over 2 years, if I understand right. On the other hand, it is a tiny fraction of the area where MH370 hypothetically could be. The air-based surface search, based on the first round of satellite analysis, was in the ballpark of 4.5 million square kilometers. It is still possible, even though generally doubted, that if the aircraft course and speed were not constant between the periods when satellite transmissions were received, the aircraft could be well outside of that area.

Another article I read quoted an official as saying something like, "we're not looking for a needle in a haystack, because first we have to find the haystack." The impression I get is this new 25,000 square km area is the area that currently looks most like the proper haystack, but it's hard to tell how different it really is from all the other haystacks.
