No I think thats total. There are only a few freighters around in service. I think Iran no longer has them flying around in pax service. Kalitta still has some 727's for charters. The 727 was never a big military or VIP plane, there are also very few of those still around. To be honest I thought the total figure would be even lower.

On the military side I know that Colombia and Mexico still use few.
On the VIP side I can think of two 727-100 active. Peter Nygard and Gambia's government.
Frys flies 727-200 on sports charter too.

Are they any left in commercial service? Not cargo?

I'm pretty sure Iran Aseman (is/was?) the last pax 727 operator.

On planespotters.net they have three ex AF -200s listed as active but I can't verify if they are still flying pax.

Kalitta charters has 8 722F's in service, at leat 4 of these are currently operating out of CVG on behalf of DHL Aviation.

721 N800AK is airborne right now in Asia. That should be the last flying Tay conversion.

There is at least one 727-100 flying in South America.

CargoJet (CJT) has still 5 B-727-200F's in daily service (C-FCJU/FCJV/C-GLJB/GCJN/GCJZ). They are supported by parts taken out of 4 other ex CargoJet B-727-200' currently stored at Hamilton (YHM). Acc. to CJT they wanted to end B-727-operation at the end of 2005, but this never happened.

There's also HZ-AB3 and the gorgeous M-STAR in the VIP category.

Yeah, they have 3 722F's as of this last fall.

Here in Brazil: Total Cargo still operate about 3 727-200F, RIO (soonly Sideral) also operate about 2.

This 727-200F is still very much a workhorse out of WMSA/SZB everyday....

Services Air Cargo in the DRC has got about 3.
One is in service now in JNB, and the DRC Air Force has got one flying.

I quite frequently see one at GYE. I'll try and get the reg off it next time I see it. As mentioned, it's sufficiently louder than modern planes.

Found one fine example: VP-BPZ, 727-17RE. I guess it's modified because it has winglets. Owned by businessman Peter Nygaard.

The VP-BPZ is a 17RE with winglets and owned by Peter Nygaard.

Weren't there some 727s that got modded to a two-man cockpit? Are these the ones still flying around or have they all been retired? How many total were modded to two-man cockpits?

This is a testament to FedEx funding 727 parts for a long time(no more) and the MD-80 sustaining JT8D maintenance. But after AA made the decision to retire the MD-80, the JT8D parts market bifurcated to lots of cheap used parts and custom new parts.

In a few years (not yet), the most consumed non-wear parts will become dear. By wear parts I mean turbine blades, tires, brakes, filters, and items like window seals that have a short enough service life there is still a profit in making new parts; my discussion excludes wear parts.

But in four to five years the cost will go up for 727s due to parts shortages as inventories of certain parts run dry and they must be purchased at bespoke prices. They will also face competition from used 737NG and older A320s pushed out of high utilization duty by the NEO, MAX, and C-series.

It is impressive how many serve still, but like the L1011 the era is coming to an end.

I believe -100 N606DH is also still active, oldest airworthy 727.

At least two ex Kelowna Flightcraft have recently gone down to SBD airworthy too, registered to Texas Aviation Group, I guess they will be parted out, but am intrigued if they have a future.

The used part market is run by a few small companies that are innovative in acquiring stock. But just as the L1011 economics went bad almost instantly for a few parts, so will the JT8D and 727.

Right now, the AA, DL, and soon G4 downsizing ensures plenty of JT8D parts (I have better insight into the pulse of engines than airframes, partially due to my own interests). Now DL has selected a retirement schedule certain to have the JT8D market short on parts in later 2020. Since G4 has the best insight into the part market, they're likely to run certain parts dry at the same time.

Unless there is a 727 airframe part about to become dear, it will be 2020 or 2021 when engine parts hit a wall. Vendors raised prices by 5X on last built parts. Since the volumes will be tiny, that is the cost of remaking bespoke items. It only costs twice as much to make 25 parts as 5.... Just as it costs twice as much to make a hundred as 25... The JT8D market has lost all economies of scale due to the flood of used parts. Cannibalization works until there aren't enough young parts to maintain the fleet. Historically the running out of parts is abrupt.

But for years, there is no possibility of a shortage. Too many common parts.

Does the JT8D "classic" have that many parts in common with the JT8D-200 series?

The retrofit to glass did not get rid of the engineer position.

As of October 2016, Aseman is still flying four 727s. I was on board one of them and saw another one or two (I didn't get one of the regs), so that number seems pretty accurate to me.

I didn't know they were down to 5 active frames. I thought they still had 9 active and the 4 that were parked 2-3 years ago when they had a peak fleet of 13 were the parts donors. Interesting though. Glad CJT 727s are still at YOW a few times a week. We just had our last Canadian North 732 departure last week. They'll be switching over to their 'new' 733 combis in the new year on the YOW-YFB run (5T have contracted 7F 734 combi to fill in for 5T in the interim).

Actually had a 727 on my frequency yesterday out of the Detroit area. Cool airplanes! I really miss the days of flying on them regularly.

I am fairly certain that I have seen on a couple of occasions a Kalitta 727-200 at Terminal A at MCI as recent as a couple of months ago. Terminal A is now used for a lot of charters so I doubt it was a cargo a/c but I can't seem to find any information that Kalitta has passenger versions of the 727.

Two 1975 vintage ex Air Jamaica, ex Kitty Hawk 727-2j0s now hauls freight for TAME in South America.
