Airbus schedules A350-1000 first flight for 24 November

Wed Nov 23, 2016 11:53 am

Hello, The first A350-1000 will made its first flight tomorrow (November 24) and the launch customer for this type is clearly for Qatar Airways. Via:
http://www.financialexpress.com/industr ... er/453788/

It was saying that this plane is going to be a 777 killer means a plane that is going to be bigger than the 777. Could anyone tell me if this plane could be bigger than the 777 or not? Thank you

It's not bigger - it is similar sized and can carry a similar number of passengers more efficiently - that's what they're talking about.

More efficient until the 777X comes perhaps?

I don't know which one will be more efficient.

It seems the A350-1000 will be about 30t lighter and more comfortable in economy (wider seats/quitter cabin).

Obviously it's just another Thursday in Toulouse, but I'm still a bit surprised given that it's being scheduled for a time when the media in the U.S. is virtually guaranteed to ignore it. Ordinarily you'd expect the business cable networks and CNN to cover the first flight -- and that's important given that the U.S. still has the largest financial market.

The 777-9X is quite a bit larger than the A350-1000, so one would expect it to be heavier.

Journalists from all over the world, including the U.S., arrived in Toulouse today. There will be enough coverage.

Yes, because the 777 is 10 abreast and the A350 is 9 abreast, but I bet I'll prefer to fly the A350 because they are more quieter, comfortable than the 777. 30t lighter but comfortable is right.

OK.
But 22% OEW mark up for ~5% more seats ? or about a metric ton per additional pax.

The cabin area of the 777-9X looks to be about 10% larger than the A350-1000 and the fact that most airlines will configure the 777-9X with 10-abreast seating in economy likely means that the differential in seat count will be closer to 15% given comparable premium seating products, seat pitch, percentages of seats in different classes, etc. The A350-1000 absolutely has a unit operating cost advantage over the 777-8X which is approximately the same size.

Quieter yes, but seat width on both the 777X and XWB will be 18 inches.

As for efficiency, have we talked lately about whether cargo is profitable?

The thread title would suggest that this was going to be a discussion about the A350-1000's upcoming first flight. Somehow the 777X has been dragged into the discussion and is now moving away from the topic at hand.

If you believe that I have this bridge in Brooklyn to sell to you, very competitive price for the structure and a one time only offer.

I am excited for the A350-1000. It looks to be an impressive plane. Hopefully once they start getting into flight testing they can do a worldwide tour to various major airlines and airports to generate some more sales.

I agree with Erebus that an A vs B 777x comparison is out of place in a thread about the first flight of a new model.

Not sure what you mean by that... if Boeing can't deliver the promised 18 inch seats at 10 abreast, I imagine it will be very expensive for them.

The longer the stretch the smaller the hz stab needs to be. And then you contrast it with the longer fuselage and the impact is more pronounced.

On the flip side, the hz stabs of the 747SP and 737-600 look clownish.

Viewed from a distance, it looks almost like a narrow body-until you see that little guy standing in front of the plane at engine startup. It would be wonderful if an airline or two flew it into SAN hehe. Can't wait to see how it looks in the air!

Surprisingly, the vertical stab. is in a slightly nose-up position. It is not much but I would not have expected any nose-up attitude during RTO. Anybody in the know can explain why? Is it to generate more down-force to the main gear when the pilot stops the plane?

I have no doubt you can fit the 777X with 18" wide seats at 10-abreast, the question is will this be used by airlines and will it be practical in everyday use. Look at it this way, the A350 already uses all the tricks to get to 18" wide seats at 9-abreast (thinner armrests), yet we are to believe the 777X will fit in another seat at the same width with only 13" extra space. You can fit in the seats but then the already narrow aisles will be even narrower or the narrow armrests will just about disappear.

In any case, looking forward to the first flight later!

I think you may be confusing the horizontal and vertical stabilisers here - it is only the vertical stabliser (aka vertical or tail fin) on the 737-600 which has the extension, whereas the horizontal stabiliser was the same as on the other 737NGs. On the other hand, the 747SP had extensions to both the vertical and horizontal stabilisers.

You're definitely confusing the vertical stabiliser (aka vertical or tail fin) with the horizontal stabiliser - it is the horizontal stabliser which controls the aircraft in pitch (and the vertical stabliser which controls it in yaw).
