L1011-100 N910TE is getting closer to it's ferry flight to Kansas City

Fri Nov 18, 2016 11:48 pm

Those of you that adore the L-1011,the aircraft did some taxi and high speed runs down the runway getting closer and closer to the ferry flight to the Kansas City area. Good to hear the RB211-22b in 2016, here is a link to several pics and short videos of it in action thanks to cactusbillaz. https://www.flickr.com/photos/cactusbil ... 944692772/

Cathay 747

If you followed the link you would have seen its current location as Tuscon, AZ.

Any idea if it will be painted in TWA colors by chance? Is there a link or Web page dedicated to this plane? Very interested.

I am also involved with N874AA. That is a fun project

It's in TuCson. Not TuScon.

I noticed it moved yesterday--the wing no longer hangs over the fence. Will be sad to see her go. TUS won't be the same without her.

This is all fine and dandy, but the last one that flew to MKC now sits engineless on the south end of airport. It's an eyesore.

Nothing much yet on the website regarding it, but I do know that they are asking for donations to help ferry it there. http://tristarexperience.org/. This blog http://blog.tristar500.net/ also keeps info regarding it and the other airworthy Tristar in the U.S Orbitals L1011-200 N140SC.

This one will keep it's engines and will be fired up from time to time etc I hear, that prior one they borrowed the engines and was not able to obtain enough money to pay the owner of them to keep them unfortunately.

They had a post on their Facebook page Thursday morning (Feb 23), with a link to an update on their website:

http://tristarexperience.org/l1011-n91011/

TriStar Experience STEM Education has prepared the aircraft for flight, received a ferry permit from the FAA, and acquired the necessary fuel for its trip from Tuscon International (KTUS) to Kansas City International (KMCI); all indications that the flight is imminent...

Although the TriStar Team and all of our supporters are very excited to see this aircraft once again take to the skies, we are working out the logistics to support our highly-qualified volunteer flight crew. As you might imagine, the requirements to relocate this aircraft are complex. We also do not want to confuse or disappoint any of those who are interested. Therefore, we will likely not be able to provide more than 5 days notice prior to the flight and we are not publicly announcing the date until we are certain the flight will occur as scheduled.

That's a pity, I'm going to be in Tucson in a couple of weeks and was hoping to see it again. Still, as a fan of the great TriStar, I'm glad it's leaving in one piece!

To all the L1011 fans if you do not have a copy of AirlinerTech volume 8 on the Tristar I recommend that you seek it out. It details the history from go to whoa.A must for your aviation library.

Looks to be in remarkably good condition, the cockpit in particular appears immaculate.

Who is still current on the L1011 ? the only Pilots I can think of are the crew that operate
the one other operational airframe, modified to launch satellites I believe.

The Captain of the flight is also the Captain for Orbital. The FO and FE are former TWA and Delta captains.

It's a pity the ferry flight can't have a few spotters on it in the cabin.

Pity it's 1 a.m. Central and I just saw this. Had I seen it yesterday I'd have driven to Kansas City from Lafayette, LA to see her arrival.

If I left now I'd have to drive full speed and probably not make it there.

Fingers crossed that someone documents arrival with stereo SOUND .... RB 211

I believe the previous owners would go and actually fire the plane up every so often, so it wasn't sitting there rotting away.

In the 12 years I lived in Tucson, I never saw anyone around it. Will be weird going over to that part of the airport and not seeing the plane there. It's been there forever. Glad she's flying out under her own power.

Apologies about not posting earlier: I just saw it. If I was in Tucson today I would have gone for the media tour.

That's such a bummer. I'm obviously glad they got it back on the ground safely, and that everyone is safe.

I hope it's an easy (read: cheap) fix, and that they can get it back up in the air soon and on its way to KCI.

Does the KC Museum plan on keeping this Tristar in flyable condition
or will she become static display?

Also, is this the same museum who'd working on the old AA 727-200
at Boeing Field?

As a former resident of downtown Kc I appreciate what this museum tries to do, but they are getting in over their heads. There is already a L1011 there, correct? How many planes are they going to park there when they don't have the resources to maintain what is already on site. Now I hear about a 727? This is going to turn into a mid continent boneyard. Just the cost and labor to pass by these birds sitting out on the tarmac for years is going to catch when the time comes.

Interesting, as the Orbital Sciences L-1011 was active yesterday:

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N140SC/history/20170713/1830Z/KONT/KMHV

Both ended up where they started. If "the Captain" from Orbital was flying the TriStar Experience bird, then he's having a busy couple of days!

Yes there is already an L-1011 there. It has no engines and has been sitting untouched for several years now. As you seem to know, all of this hinges on the Airline History Museum that's at Wheeler Downtown Airport. If I'm being entirely honest it's a somewhat underwhelming museum at this point. They've got some pretty cool airplanes stored in the hangar in TWA colors but overall the museum is very much still a work in progress and doesn't have a whole lot of stuff on display. I asked them what the plan was with the current L-1011 sitting on the tarmac and they said they were wanting to turn it into an interactive classroom or something along those lines to teach kids more about aviation. This was 3 years ago when I went there and I don't think that idea has ever came to fruition. I don't know why they are trying to get more planes when they haven't even done anything with the first L-1011 they got ferried there. That plane will never fly again either.

In case there is any confusion, this aircraft is going to TriStar Experience which is completely unrelated to the Airline History Museum. TriStar has a BAC 1-11 N999BW at MCI and TWA Wings of Pride MD-83 at MKC. Airline History Museum has their own L-1011 and Connie, etc.

And mission accomplished, after an aborted attempt yesterday. She's finally home. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the TriStars becomes parts for the other.
