EVA criticized for flying in a Typhoon

Mon Oct 03, 2016 3:00 pm

Some EVA flights operated to Taiwan while typhoon Megi was still around. Getting a lot of criticism in the press. Chairman LIn had to come out and apologize to keep the bad PR from getting worse.

Some said this would not have happened under the former Chairman.

May still have been technically "safe" but why fly when everyone else has stopped?

What do you think? Think EVA should have pressed on when other carriers have called it quits? Or you think they were heros?

The bad PR will not be good for them. They are known to be more safety conscious then Ci, but some are having a rethink about that now.

EVA Air is still regarded as the best in class airline in Taiwan, given the Skytrax 5-star rating. Flying in a typhoon is like Toyota's barrage of recalls back in 2010 (given Toyota has a best in class durability in contrast to other vehicle brand).

Heroes... dear god no. Foolish, Yes.

There must have been over 10 BR aircraft that diverterd to Hong Kong... while almost no other airline even attempted to land in TPE (was a few, FX MD11 being one)

Is this not up to the airport to close? If the airport is still open, I would imagine it would be OK to operate. This doesn't make it the right choice of course.

The difference may be that other airlines don't call Taiwan home so they were keeping their aircraft away.
