Just flew out of SAN. Saw a couple United birds on the north ramp. Are those planes that should have been flying to IAH over the last couple days but are stranded for lack of a better word?

Most likely, given Jetblue has done the same thing at SAN before when one of their hubs was getting hammered on the east coast. Of course, I don't have insider knowledge so I may be wrong (although I doubt it's a charter given there are 2 of them).

I thought I saw 3 plus a Delta 757. Didn't think that was MLB related. Padres have been home and I think the Dodgers ride the bus down from LA (they play each other tomorrow).

I was at SAN this last Monday (the 28th) and the DL 757 was over on the north ramp. I'm not sure who the Padres were playing the first part of the week but maybe the DL brought them here., since it was here Monday and today...

I saw a Delta 767 or 777 grounded for the past two days as well! I wasn't sure because some of Delta's 767s don't have winglets and was driving back and forth on the PCH.

The United Birds are related to the Hurricane Harvey, 2 left today, 1 leaves on the 4th of September. I personally towed the one parked at the charter spot back to the gates last night for it to operate a flight this morning. IAH will be on reduced schedule next several weeks and they need to park a couple of planes at the line stations till they figure out how to get things back to normal. The Delta 757 is Baseball related.

In this week's Board meeting materials, there's a discussion about mechanical troubles that Edelweiss had and prohibited them from meeting their planned number of rotations for 2017 (30 rotations rather than 40). Anyone know more about this? And a letter from WK says too that bookings have "far been below expectations". I wonder if the inability to book WK tickets from SAN directly on WK's website has a hand in the disappointing numbers.

WN will gain access and operate some flights from Gate 11, beginning next week. No details on how many flights or percentage of usage. 3 security check-points ...... oy vey :banghead:. The new Terminal 1 can't some soon enough. But we welcome all the growth  Any new word of VX coming over to join AS in T1E.

AS is supposed to move to T2E to put them closer with VX and AA. With the airline relocations going on, I wonder if WN will be able to use more gates from T1W. That would let them move out of the 1 and 1A gates and stay at two checkpoints. Spirit, Allegiant and the like could then move to the 1 and 1A area.

WN is going to take over T1W also next year.
This only because eventually construction will on the new TW and half the gates on T1E will be closed and torn down for construction. WN will also be relocating the T/C and Baggage claim as construction moves forward. Last I heard WN request up to 20 gates in the new T1.

This did happen today (Monday, 9/11!) WN offered a 6:30am RON + 4 turns between ~noon & 4:30p -- very solid use of the gate for 4 departures during that 4.5hr period; QX also used gate 11 for 2 Q400 turns today.

I can't believe WN isn't going to run some sort of post-security bus/shuttle between their 3 separate gate areas to prevent sending connecting pax thru TSA multiple times. WN does a rather healthy connecting operation here, and if HI service starts being offered thru SAN...

Interesting idea: if WN gave up gates 1, 1A and 2, to the likes of G4, NK, F9, SY, and took over all the rest of T1W, when AS leaves, WN would end up with gates 3 thru 18. Makes a lot of sense to me! WN would probably really like to have 15 gates at SAN asap... especially if Island flights are coming soon!

I'm sorry to ask, 'flyguy, but is this like one of your famous "schedule extension' rumors, or is this something we can take seriously? (Is this a fact or not?) I didn't think we were that close to breaking ground on the new T1 construction. That means that WN would have 15 to 18 gates starting in 2018! Wow!!!!!!

It's been very difficult to get any firm leads on how the airline locations will look at the end of 2018 -- of course the airport isn't releasing any info at all yet (if they even know for sure yet.)

This was an interesting agenda item wasn't it, Amador'?

I watched the replay of the board meeting today and enjoyed the "Hampton Show" (as Item 10 was discussed and voted on.) It shows that SAN takes their incentive packages very seriously and I was glad to see that the Board was Edelweiss-friendly with their vote and let them have their proposed break for this year. It should mean at least 2 more years of WK service to ZRH from SAN, with next year seeing almost double the number of flights that we had this summer!

I know that Hampton, as well as the entire Board, would not want to make WK angry; after all, they are part of the Lufthansa Group and it's hard to imagine how hard -- and long -- Hampton and the SDIA Route Development team have worked to land LH here! Unnecessarily pissing off WK (read: LH) would have been a very bad move...

Hampton also mentioned that the June LF for WK was in the low-60s, but mentioned that he's quite sure the July and August LFs will be at least in the 70s. And after all, this last June consisted of only the first 7 r/t of a brand new intercontinental route that could pretty much only be booked on the Swiss end, to a brand new U.S. destination! IMO, there will be no issue with WK being nicely profitable in 2018!

Yeah, I'm not sure how much stock to put in this. The phasing plan for construction of the T1 replacement has the existing T1 operational for the duration of Phase 1. Only when that's completed will the existing T1 be demolished to make room for Phase 2. That won't be until mid-2022 so we'll be hanging in the rotunda for the while.

This is good news and I think it's good to show airlines that the airport is committed to helping them develop their routes. If I'm able, I'd love to fly WK to and from ZHR just to see what the new FIS is like. No real analysis here but what I find interesting about the new routes we've seen is that they haven't been served by new generation aircraft like the 787 and A350 (JAL's 788 the exception). Instead, we've seen WK and LH with A343 and DE with a 76E.

Are all the route (seasonal and otherwise) incentives spoken for or are there additional incentives still available for new airlines to claim? Having more incentives available would help get those routes we've all been speculating about (MAN, ICN, AMS, etc.). According to SAN's data, South Korea is sandwiched right between Japan and Germany for leakage of passengers to LAX so that ICN so I'm still hoping for that.

SDIA should consider adding a few FIS capable gates down at T-1, so

coming, and I don't think they would want all those little 737s mixed in with the 787s,
A340s,and 747 at the FIS gates!

When Phase 1 of the new FIS is complete it'll have the ability to accommodate two wide-body and two narrow-body aircraft simultaneously so I think there'll be room for a couple of 737s to be in the mix over there. I just wonder what the existing area will look like with AS's E175 arriving from MEX at 9pm. If BA runs a bit late we could see a 747 parked next to a E175. Quite the contrast!

Worked there about a decade back but almost all of this information (certainly the information I'm posting here) is available on SAN's website. The Airport Authority board meeting agendas are packed with presentations and reports from staff. Of all the public agencies I've encountered, the San Diego Airport Authority is by far the best at making their materials accessible on their website.

Untilizing gate 11 allows construction to begin on T1E facility upgrades that would take at least one gate out of service.

I haven't worked a flight there yet but I hear it's fine. No worse than gate 1A. We've been using new towbarless pushbacks since the beginning of summer and it helps a lot with tight maneuvering...once you learn it. Heh.

I don't -- never have. Although in my lifetime -- and that's a LOT of time now -- I might've spent as much of it at SAN as anyone, dating back to the 1950s and the old white stucco terminal building on Pacific Highway pre-1967 (when the new terminal was first opened on the south side of the runway!)

In my case, just overwhelming interest in civil aviation and SAN, and the desire to find out everything I can!
WN732 wrote:

Sure. http://www.san.org/Airport-Authority/Me ... rity-Board

Also, if you go to the SAN.org 'Site Map' and sluice through it, there's all kinds of stuff buried in there. As Amador' said, SDCRAA/SDIA are real good at being quite transparent EXCEPT when it comes to new airlines and new routes - then they keep the cards real close and really clam up! Their philosophy is to keep very quiet and let the airlines make the announcements. So unless there are some real subtle hints that come out as asides in non-related discussions, there's little disclosed by our airport folks.

Silver1SWA wrote:

See, now there you go! First I've heard of any of this. "Upgrades" and "T1" being used in the same sentence?! Wow! Can you further enlighten us at all on any of this project, Silver'? (Now THIS is a reliable source folks!)

It seems to me that WN needs more gates at SAN asap but it sure would be great if they could make T1E a bit roomier. And they have to be getting ready to start some sort of shuttle between all 3 of their gate complexes to save connecting pax from having to re-clear TSA/security... That is just an unacceptable situation.

Wouldn't an airside shuttle take up an entire gate for each part of T1? I'm not sure WN would even have room to be able to do that.

I wouldn't think that would be necessary. There might be some downstairs space in the rotundas that could be used as a small holdroom, or maybe they could build a small holdroom outside on the tarmac, to be served by small buses or vans.

How about a sterile, enclosed walkway from gate 10 to 11, and something similar from gate 2 to 3? There has to be some quick, relatively inexpensive solution to this issue since the beginning of building even phase 1 of the new T1 is still some time in the future.

WN has a good-sized operation at SAN and the airline and the airport have to keep up with it, even allowing it to keep growing. I still have no knowledge of immediate or mid-term plans for WN's real estate -- nothing official has been announced that I'm aware of -- but there have to be things in the works. (And according to Silver', there apparently are!)

It's mostly just behind the scenes stuff right now as our T-Point (Bag Room) and belt system can't keep up with the increased workload. Things get pushed beyond their limits at peak times of the day, especially when multiple -800s are on the ground.

Ahhhhh, thank you R. Anything that helps the overall operation is a good thing - less stress for WN employees, fewer problems for customers, etc. BTW, I can't even imagine what T1E must be like with multiple -800s gated simultaneously...!?

I haven't gotten any traction on that. You can book an WK flight through Swiss' website but that seems less than ideal when the marketing around the flight is for Edelweiss, not Swiss. Maybe it's an IT issue? Perhaps the WK site isn't connected with the rest of Swiss' and LH's reservation systems. Their current arrangement is strange. I've reached out to them to ask about changed for next year and will report back if they say anything.

For those photog's among us, a new a/c type will be coming to SAN in January for a limited time.

As of now, Virgin will be bringing their A321Neo into SAN once a week for about a month beginning Jan 14. Here's the schedule as it stands today:

VX #1956 SFO-09 35 SAN-11 08 Sundays only (op's 1/14 thru 2/11/18 only)
VX #1957 SAN-12 08 SFO-13 47 Sundays only

As soon as this service ends, a similar schedule will be op'd between SFO and LAS, again, for about a month.

I assume this will be aircraft familiarization for the SAN and LAS stations for the newest member of the AAG fleet. Hopefully we will see scheduled flights on the Neo in 2018! Perhaps we'll see the airplane on SAN-BOS, or even SAN-JFK, if AAG ever gets around to announcing any new routes anytime in the future...

AFAIK, this will be the first scheduled service of the Neo at SAN.

I'm curious.. is there anyway to find out the load factors for JAL and BA history? I known other threads have been posting stats like for SJC etc

Oh yes, the stats are available here: https://www.transtats.bts.gov/Data_Elements.aspx?Data=1
and you can go back as far as the beginning of the route you're interested in.

Fool around with it and IM me if you need any help getting to where you want to be, Yahnih. There are a couple of tricky turns and hints that might reduce the frustration but you can probably figure the stuff out. (Just keep using the pull-downs to narrow the search until you get to what you want -- carrier, airport, etc. Note: the data takes ~ 6 months to post so you won't find anything for last month here (or anywhere.)

I've been keeping track of SAN's international routes' traffic (pax counts, LFs, # of operations) for years including the beginnings of BA and JL here (and elsewhere.) I find it all very interesting and fun.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Hey folks, I'm just wondering if most of us like this never-ending thread that keeps everything-SAN in one convenient place but takes a l-o-n-g time now to get through, or to look for something. A.net seems to be letting these stretch-threads keep going indefinitely now but I don't think we have to.

Please voice your opinion on whether it's time to start a new thread, and perhaps whether or not we should limit each one to about 200 posts (like we used to)? I'll be glad to start a new one if that's what everyone prefers, or someone else can certainly do it. Or if most people like it the way it is, that's fine too.

Just thought I'd ask.

I have a feeling that all of a sudden, we might get a pile of announcements of new routes, airlines, news and the length of this thread will grow a bunch more, very quickly!

I just know that one of these days AS will finally unleash their mass of new route announcements that we're expecting, and I'm very optimistic that SAN will be involved in at least some of them! And WN's next schedule extension could very well have some great SAN involvement as well... And things are certainly hopping at SDIA and that's not going to slow down at all over the next several years!

Keep it as it is please, I have an announcement from the site whenever there is a new post and it takes me directly to it.

Hey all, let's plan to cap the thread at around 600 posts. I think enough time has passed that we can start a new thread in a few weeks. This one, after all, was started last year!

I'd vote for a new one. It's a new season and we seem to be a fairly prolific bunch of posters for our 661 acre airport (and the thread is more than a year old) so a new thread seems right. I live on an academic calendar so starting up something for Fall 2017 to Fall 2018 is good for me.

I know I keep bringing this up but I like to keep everyone informed. I was doing some homework and DL has been averaging LF's on SAN-DTW at 90%. The PDEW in the market is pretty healthy, I think a 2nd carrier is now an when as opposed to an if, it definitely could be something AS or NK could look into for an add in 2018.

By this I assume you mean a flight explicitly scheduled as a Neo? Because I've seen Frontier's A320Neo at SAN but it seems like they just schedule the flight as A320 and sometimes use a Neo instead of a Ceo.

Yes HA', the flights I listed, from RoutesOnline, are reported to be Neos. (I also verified on VX.com and the skeds are there.

I've thought this all to be true for a while now and am still surprised that no one else has entered the DTW-SAN market yet. Neither AS nor NK seem to be on the verge of anything exciting in SAN right now but you never know. WN, on the other hand, seems very pro-SAN-growth these days and they keep sneaking around and grabbing new routes that others, well, aren't...So maybe they'll surprise us all!

On the topic of multiple threads vs one big thread, I'm ok with one thread since the notification system on this new forum seems pretty good at bringing me to the last unread topic. I recall that the old forum had issues with large threads, remember it did all the posts on one page rather than splitting it up. If we do want to split, I'd suggest doing a new one each year rather than splitting after an arbitrary number of posts.

Sunday morning, UA CEO Oscar Munoz was on my flight from IAH to SAN. I thanked him for getting UA on the right track and the continued improved service after he was appointed CEO. I don't know the reason for his visit, but hopefully, more service here. I see lots of threads about other carriers here but very little about UA. As a MP member, I'd like to see some growth with UA here. I fly weekly in the fall and occasionally other times of the year and the morning bank to hubs seem to be running at capacity or near capacity. Maybe some point to point too if there is data to support and resources to support this.

I can't for the life of me think of anywhere UA could add out of SAN. Maybe a return to HNL? My wish would be the reinstatement of service into CLD and hopefully nonstop SFO on the E175.

Why SFO e175? I enjoy taking the nonstop 737.
