Proposal: Split Non-av board into non-av and political

Mon Jul 09, 2018 2:40 pm

I would personally hope that by isolating political threads in a board that talk about global or regional political events as well as various policies in different aspects of the world, users of the forum might be able to populate the non-av board with topics that are more interesting and with more varieties. What do you guys think about it?

There is a political forum planned, however I can not provide an exact time frame on when that will happen

People will just make the non political forum full of troll posts in addition to the politics forum. Any post that originally is started in civil that gets moved to the political forum will just make people go there. It's spreading the already thin userbase even more spread out. It's not going to accomplish anything.

The point of having a political forum is to keep politics in one forum, it also allows the users who use the Non-Aviation forum to discuss in things they want to whether its a sporting event, what car they drive, advice on a particular subject etc without being drained out by political discussions. Topics are routinely moved from forum to forum as they develop, a topic may start out based on aviation but as the discussion continues if politics is being discussed, we as moderators will move it to the appropriate forum when it is necessary rather than locking the topic if the topic is civilised and constructive otherwise we would be accused of censorship. In regards to the userbase we don't have a thin userbase, it the largest aviation forum in the world, users participate when they want whether is daily, a couple days of the week, weekly, monthly or whenever they want to contribute.

In the interim, and until the new forum exists, can we just ban political discussion completely and give anyone posting these topics a short holiday?

And aside from that, there are totally ridiculous posts appearing in non-aviation now. There is even one there with a single word in it. A single word post! In the old days, that wasn't allowed if I remember correctly.

I think the OP of those posts went cuckoo with the amount of political posts flooding non-av at the moment.

The time to separate politics is now....

A quick solution might be just to have a USA Politics mega-topic. All USA political discussion gets buried in the one topic. Maybe do the same for politics from other countries.

I would support this, and if there is a system of appointing particular mods to particular forums, choose very carefully the mods for the Politics forum. Also you'll want to change the policy of not notifying people when their threads are deleted.

Agree.

Would it be possible to rename "political forum" into Helicopter VTOL forum?

- political topics could be move to a non aviation site, maybe some wants to start up a new one?
- less moderation would be required
- a new users group / sponsors could be attracted
- it would fit the original airlines.net goals
- it would strenghten the photo data base & strategic position of airliners.net
- it would be in line with airlines.net's core business

Change and creativety is good, if the end users indicate a strong need.

Deepblue (RIP) agreed & I'm sure Johan Lundgren might have an opinion here.

Our primary focus on this topic right now is to get the developers to add a Non Aviation Politics Forum. There's nothing to rename because nothing exists yet. We will consider a Helicopter/UAV Forum if and when the Politics Forum ever happens. We first requested a Politics Forum last winter or spring and it still hasn't happened yet, so don't expect to see a Helicopter Forum soon. We can't just create a new forum at a whim, it's up to the developers to make that happen. We have no control over that.

Thanks, to be honest, I would also take some time to reconsider a "Non Aviation Politics Forum".

Looking at useage over the last 20 years, Photography Feedback has been the slowest with an average of 3 posts a day. But it's a.net core business, so probably a lot of resistance replacing that one.. Maybe combine Photography Feedback and Aviation Photography into "Aviation Photography and feedback" ? Nothing would be lost & a helicopter forum would boost new interest.
