Progress: Case for a Dedicated Helicopter / VTOL Forum

Wed Jan 31, 2018 5:07 pm

A Great Opportunity to Enhance A.net with a Fresh New Dedicated Helicopter / VTOL Forum.

It's a unique, developing big segment with hundreds of interesting topics. Maybe new Advertisers too.

Image

A.net must keep innovating to remain #1!

Who has to be convinced ?!

A shot I took opportunitically a month ago (patient seemed relatively ok).

I think the nice thing about a helicopter forum would be

 it isn't there, it might attarct a new group of enthusiasts / professionals / sponsors
 the variety of technologies / operators & applications
 helicopters are everywhere and so much is happening / was hapenning in the past, new topics never should be an issue

I took the shot below in Feb in the alps. The local rescue teams hands over the patient. The doctor was brought to the patient to collect her. The pilot was waiting for them to return and can now be seen on the right side scanning the area he'll fly into minutes later.

Shame seems like no one is listening,so no change there then. Also why on Earth would you lump military aircraft with 'civilian' space programmes?
Both these areas Civilian VTO and Space programmes are (as stated) going through technological revolutions yet the site as a whole still bitches on the size of chrome bumpers of (insert model here) aircaft.
Which begs the question. Is A net for aircraft enthusiasts or the last bastion for people suffering from OCD?

This idea was raised in the Rules update thread. As noted by one of the other moderators

The politics forum has been requested by a large number of users, because political subjects have completely dominated the Non Aviation Forum for quite some time. There's a very active group of users who participate in Non Av, but are tired of being inundated with politics. Splitting it into a dedicated forum would ensure that only users wanting to see political discussion would be exposed to it. A helicopter/UAV forum is an interesting idea, but this is literally the first time I've heard that suggested. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but we'd need to see a significant interest in the idea before we could consider it. Some users are already upset when topics are moved from Civ Av to a more appropriate forum, so a further splitting of aviation topics might not be very popular.

As noted we would need to see significant interest from users before we could consider it. We are not against the idea but we need to justify that a new sub forum not only on the subject of the new forum but whether there is enough users interested in it , and this goes for whether its a helicopter forum or something else.

I think a.net is missing a clear opportunity. A diverse segment with lots happening.

Given that this thread has been up for nearly a year and has seen little interest, I wouldn't anticipate on it happening anytime soon. We're not going to push to create a new forum when it isn't clear that anyone outside of a handful of users would actually post in it. The only new forum we're working on right now is a Non Aviation Politics Forum, which has been highly requested by a large number of users to return some sanity to the Non Av Forum. There just isn't enough interest in other forum ideas right now.

I've been proposing this for more than a decade. Lack of innitiative / any new forum has kind of silenzed everything.

If some one suggested we will rename "Non Aviation Politics Forum into "Helicopter VTOL" forum me, and probably many others, would totally applaud that

Because this is an aviation forum.

There are so many better places political discussion can be held. And it's only a click away!

I'm not arguing with you — I don't think politics should be discussed here at all, but a large number of very vocal users believe otherwise. Furthermore, a large number of users who enjoy participating in Non Av, but don't want to see it dominated by political discussion, want sanity restored to that forum. Until the "probably many others" wanting a Helicopter VTOL forum start getting more vocal, we'll still be discussing this in another decade. As of now, there has been zero evidence of those many others you speak of — in nine months, only two other people have posted in support of the idea. We aren't going to advocate for a new forum that's posted to once a week by three users. As it is, there are a large number of users who seem to hate the idea of having subforums to begin with, so we'd get complaints from more users than it seems would actually participate in the forum.

I'm not trying to bash your idea, because if users wanted it, then the other moderators and I would support it. But, we're not going to get behind an idea that seemingly isn't very popular. I'm not talking anecdotally, I mean actual evidence of more than just a couple of users endorsing the idea.

I will second ( or third) that!
Perhaps a more general reorganisation is required?
There seems to be a lot of major areas shoved into 'others' whether it be VTO machines,Spaceflight or indeed autonomous veichles.

IMHO, this proposed Helicopter/VTOL forum should include Urban Air Mobility threads. There is currently a lot of innovations and companies and i can't really imagine posting a thread about Cora or the Airbus Vahana between 2 discussions concerning Long Haul routes or F/A gossip. Those small aircrafts, sometimes unmaned, share similiraties in technology and operation environment with helicopters and it could be interesting.

And if the users are not seduced by the idea of having several subforums, why not merging all those subforums into a single one and giving the ability to filter each thread by its subject i don't really now what's possible.

To summarize: Today, for each subject that doesn't include "heavy" civil aviation, i go on other websites.

p.s: i know this website since a lot of years, but i wasn't even aware of a "Site Related" subforum until keesje made an advertisement on "Civil Aviation". We are not many to want to spend some minutes to improve a website by posting suggestions.

I think this is a good idea. I'd be interested in posting and reading a dedicated helicopter/VTOL forum. I think there is some good knowledge and interest in that segment within forum members and would likely attract new members to the site.

Agree, there's a ton of interesting segments, high speed, the 5-6 biggest OE, orders, medivac, defense, operations, electric airtaxis, history. Simply moving the 50 most recent topics from other forums would be an easy kick start.

Ah I see, though area, from personal experience. Do you agree this under the skin CAD cutaway of the RACER is a kind of unusual in terms of detail to share on internet at this development stage? If I was the IP responsible I wouldn't publish this in this resolution.. (it will fly in 2020)..

I'm not really a "helicopter guy" but I find them interesting, and enjoy hearing about new innovations in the field. I'd love a helicopter forum, especially if the mods kept stuff in it, rather than randomly moving things to "Travel, Polls & Preferences"...sorry, that's an argument for another thread. ;)

I honestly was not trying to be snarky, so I apologize if it came off that way. My reason for asking you to review the purpose for each forum is because quite a large number of users aren't clear on the delineation of forums; if we were to post this in Civ Av, we would have about five reports within an hour to have it moved back here to Site Related. This forum exists specifically to discuss site issues. We don't want to make a habit out of moving threads to different forums so that they might get more views. If that's what we're going to do, then we should scrap the Helicopter Forum idea, and just put all threads into a single forum. Since that probably defeats the purpose, it's our goal to respect the purpose of each forum to maintain site organization.

Another interesting VTOL design direction.

The cabin, flying and driving assemblies separately optimized.

Image

The flying part could be centrally stored / charged / maintained and fly around to move various payloads on demand.. boosting utilization.

Same for the systems drive train. And even passenger cabin. The developing autonomous technology could enable it.

The result could be relative good efficient flying and a good efficient driving vehicles. Contrary to combined "flying cars" of the past.

In my opinion an interesting direction, worthly of being discussed over a longer period on a dedicated VTOL / Helicopter Forum!

I have to believe a helicopter forum would do moderately well here. There are enough people in the industry or otherwise interested. The best images are here, so some traffic already comes through, but very few people are going to start a random helicopter thread in the civil aviation forum.

I guess that the same for the militairy platform. Specially for slow moving topics like new developments a seperate forum would have great positive new value.

Brick, a politics forum would be less positive & more time consuming for mods.

Plus, this is an aviation site, so it would fit in better.

I seems the power plants of this machines are designed to provide shaft horsepower rather than thrust, which would be required for NOTAR..

A helicopter forum is an outstanding idea, I suspect there’s been a low response as many members don’t visit this particular part of the forum

I think the question should be asked in tech ops and you’d get a much bigger response

I think it is a shame this is taking so long.

I think A.net is missing an excellent opportunity to create a new, leading forum on a broad, dynamic & interesting playing field.

Can't we just move ahead? Who is deciding to do nothing?

I'm not sure why you think we have any control over this. We're moderators; we don't run the site, and we can't change the site. We can suggest changes, but whether or not changes are made is completely out of our hands. Right now, there are at least a dozen or more users locked out of their accounts due to some sort of site issue — I'd rather the developers make sure the site is actually working the way it's supposed to.

Believe me, if I had my way, we'd add at least two or three more forums, and combine a couple of existing forums. I don't think our current setup really makes sense anymore. Unfortunately it's not up to us though. It would be good for everyone if the site can progress to the point where those changes can be made, but I'm not confident that'll happen anytime soon.

Hello!

I'm a new member but I've been reading a.net for a long time.
I would also like a helicopter forum. I'm not participating much in the other topics because I lack knowledge that would make it worthwhile for the communty but as a mountain rescuer, I would love to discuss these rotorcraft-related topics here.

BTW, I'm pretty sure not a lot of people read the site-related forum, explaining the relatively low amount of answer to this tread.

Full support for the Helicopter forum. I've been looking for one for a few years now, but none are very good. Anet members would make it an interesting and informative place.

Thanks for the support. I feel a new forum could be really succesfull for a.net.

Earlier on I proposed to have members point out 50-100 good threads on Helicopter / VTOL topics in other forums and move them to the new forum.

That way the Helicopter / VTOL forum could be filled with interesting topics/ discussions from day 1.

As someone who have recently started a helicopter thread in Tech/Ops, I can only support this idea.
