Admins and moderation

Tue Oct 31, 2017 2:20 am

I'm getting quite tired of the admins moderating this forum like a kindergarten field trip. How much longer do I have to come and see notifications of replies only to find them deleted? STOP DOING THAT!!! Yes, we do get into heated discussions sometimes. Yes, we do get personal because we like different aircraft companies or airlines. But that's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!! Let us argue it out. There is a Report button that can be pressed if someone feels offended. We are grownups and can handle a bit of a CYBER fight. And don't tell me you are protecting other participants because after everything that's happened to this website for the past two years you are lucky to have any at all. We need to maintain the level of discussion but WE DON'T NEED BABYSITTERS!!!

We'll call you when we need you. Until then, LEAVE! US! ALONE!

Did you consider the fact that deletions usually come from reported posts, as was the case you're referring to? Or the fact that an open reminder to posters in the thread is the preferred approach to waiting until things get out of hand, requiring warnings and bans to be issued? Our open notices to keep things on topic or tone down personal attacks is our way of trying to make sure nobody gets too heated or off topic that they ruin the thread. People like that spoil the discussion, which isn't fair to the OP, nor is it fair to those wanting to have an actual discussion. If users can't have a discussion without having "a bit of a cyber fight", then we aren't doing the job that users on this site expect us to do.

Our moderation doesn't just come from some inner desire to make everyone miserable. We volunteer our time to try to keep discussions civil, and that's something that the vast majority of users want from us. No, not everyone is always happy with what we do, but most users are supportive of how we manage the forums.

We're always happy to accept valid and constructive criticism, and I'm no exception to that. However, your post is clearly a misinformed rant that offers no solutions, apart from "go away". Since that won't happen, maybe you can think of some more productive solutions. This site doesn't belong to you, or me, or the other moderators; it belongs to the entire community of users. That community has mandated us over the years to moderate in a certain fashion, and that's what we'll continue to do. All moderators are users too, so we have as much of a desire as anyone to see this place thrive. We gain nothing from acting too harshly, but we stand to lose everything if we don't act at all.
