Always knew that if I needed to know anything about weight restrictions and ranges, Sunrise was the man to respond. A true enthusiast and a great contributor. Hopefully we can arrange a note to his family to extend our condolences and voice appreciation for his contribution here. I suspect like many of us, his friends and family probably weren't aware of his enthusiasm for, or knowledge of, commerical aviation.

I posted this in the NZ Aviation thread, but I think it is appropriate here.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Ave atque vale Sunrisevalley.

Obviously, I never met Hugh but I knew his alter ego - Sunrisevalley - very well.

His posts were always literate and very well informed, and he made technical stuff accessible even to me - which is not an easy thing to do.

He was a fine contributor to a.net.

As a professional in an airline, Hugh once PM'd me to ask if I was in fact the person he thought I was.
I responded in the affirmative and we established a professional relationship around aircraft performance, weight and range/payload. There are very few people you could trust with your 'true identity' on a public forum like this, however Hugh was one!
He informed me a few months back that he was unwell and I recently PM'd him to enquire on his health. I now know why he didn't reply with one of his typically prompt and polite messages.
I true gentlemen. I will miss him around here.
I hope you had the range to make it somewhere nice Hugh. RIP.

Always liked Hugh and will miss his posts and emails.

We mostly discussed aircraft performance, schedules, new destinations etc. He was quite interested in what was happening at Air NZ and said he was present at Auckland International Airport when the first Air NZ DC8 was delivered in Jul 1965.

In a 15 May 2012 email he explained his user name.
"Yes, my aka Sunrisevalley is a bit of a giveaway for those who know the district. It is a lovely valley running south from Upper Moutere, I was raised on a hop and sheep farm. Do you have Nelson/ Moutere connections?"

Hugh would sometimes refer to a 'contact' at Air NZ, who I assumed was a relative or former work colleague. Pleased to know it was you 'aotearoa'.

What a lovely man he was.

Knowledgable but never sharp. Unfailingly respectful.

RIP SunriseValley. He was a real treasure of this community. One of airliners.net's top minds on issues such as ESAD, ETOPS, Payload & Range curves. Condolences to his family. He will be missed.

He was a big fan of payload/range discussions and even had a Piano-X license.
