Written vs. video trip reports

Thu Jul 13, 2017 5:57 am

Is there anything that can be done about video only trip reports? How about those reports which are only links to an outside site?

Same with me - I only read the reports of the people who have made the effort to describe their experience here on the forums. I utterly dislike videos and do not click on links to external sites as I cannot be certain these are safe.

I would suggest that if you come across any trip reports that either have only a video trip report or a link to an outside site such as a travel blog to either report the post or email the moderators at moderators@airliners.net and bring this to our attention so we can take the appropriate action. The only time we would allow a video of the trip report would be if it was added to a detailed trip report of photos and comments from the user.

I hate to be a snitch, but I just may do it. I know I'm not the only one annoyed by these reports, which I feel are just tools to add click counts to the posters websites.

I agree that posts should not simply be a link to a video or just a couple of sentences with a link. The same applies to those who write a few sentences about a report and then a link to the full version on their web page. But a written trip report with photos with perhaps a short video of landing or take-off is an acceptable addition.

On the old site embedding a video was permitted provided autoplay was not enabled, although not many were because many people weren't sure how to do it. The normal html tags for embedding videos don't appear to work on this current version of phpbb as installed as html is disallowed. This is a shame because if it were possible posters could write their report and include the video without readers needing to leave this site. I think a compromise of this sort can only benefit the forum because increasingly people are taking videos and it is far easier to upload them to competing sites, possibly meaning fewer people posting here and fewer readers.

The moderators had discussed a while ago that we would allow videos under certain conditions and would use our discretion accordingly. As you stated a small video of a takeoff or landing is acceptable providing the was a full written trip report with pictures. What is not acceptable is those users who give very little detail, maybe a photo or two and provide a link of a video directing you to the users YouTube account or to their blog. Anything that looks like an advertisement and/or self promotion will fall under the copyright and advertising forum rules and will be ruled on accordingly. Unfortunately there will be some who will use the Trip reports as a means to promote themselves and all we can ask of everyone is if you see something that violates a rule is to report it to the moderators so it can be reviewed and appropriate action taken.
