New Site.

Tue Jun 14, 2016 8:05 pm

Sorry, this just does not do it for me. Maybe I'm just too old. "Our" old site, while it had some drawbacks, probably could have been cleaned up with a little more discipline with both the users and the Monitors.

I truly do not care for the new setup. I truly do miss the old layout.

Such a drastic change will take some getting used to maybe a few days to a week but in general I think I like it. I like some new features.

I agree, the old blue was a classic. It really stood out on the web, especially with the B744 on the top. Now it's generic.

I don't like the fact that I can only see about 9 threads vertically on my monitor now with all the wasted space in between. With the old layout I could see probably 25-30.

Also, the forum looks very generic at this point.

I do miss the Queen of the skies at the top, but overall I think this is a good redesign. I like that it is responsive which will improve your experience on mobile devices. :ugeek:

I agree with you.

The old was so much easier to navigate. This new layout gives me a headache.

I hope there will be a way to go back to the old site layout. Because I'm not a fan of this one at all.

Looking good, but it could use a bit more contrast. Everything is looking white and grey, all almost the same color and that makes it hard to see what is what. A bit more and darker colors would be welcome.

The site is awesome on mobile devices now. It was a bit painful before but now it loads like an app. Very nice, will be even better when I've found my way around it fully :)

I agree I miss the 747 and I miss having all the threads in one scroll. However remember that these changes are happening across many other websites as google implements rules that say if your website must be mobile friendly to appear in their rankings.

the old site, while very functional on a monitor, was not mobile friendly.

This new design is not friendly to desktop users. I liked barely having to scroll down when looking at the front page, pictures, and the forum list. Now everything is huge and the front page is, if I were to print it out, dozens of pages long.

Yikes. Well I'm trying to be open minded, but the compact nature of the old site made it MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to see what was new in one quick glance. This design seems like you're favoring mobile devices. I know that's all the rage these days but I think doing it just for the sake of doing it really isn't the right thing to do. There's waaaaaaaayyy too much wasted space on this. Keeping things compact and efficient was so great!

The new look could use some contrast. I have problems finding the topics I am interested in. The old website was much much better in terms of this.

Personally I think this is a welcome a long overdue change. These days I usually use the site on either the iPhone or iPad so the old site needed a LOT of pinch zooming!

I think most of the complaints so far (different look) are either transient or can be resolved with configuration. My main complaints is that the new look is less compact, and seems to require more UI space. Perhaps that can be adjusted as well, but I'd like more posts per page, and within a post, for the responses to use a smaller area. I may just be missing something, though.

Re: New Site. Awesome redo... suggestion for a little less white space in the forum comments.

Tue Jun 14, 2016 8:30 pm

I understand the need for the changes. We are becoming a mobil first world. The difference between these new forums and the old forums on my Lumia 1520 are night and day. Not only for readability, but for speed as well.

That said, for the Desktop rendering, I would like to point out just one thing that might compress things a little to fit an extra post or two on each page..

There is an unnecessary line feed inserted about each every comment within the text box of that comment. It waste space, and quite frankly, I am in agreement with others that the forums have just a little too much white space when rendered on the desktop.

Yes, that's my only real complaint. Some boards allow you to customize the number of posts per page in your user settings, but I couldn't find any setting like there here.

Other things will take some getting used to, but overall I think this update was long overdue. Like a new livery, it will grow on people.

Responding to a post feels like one almost leaves the site, but then again I am a dinosaur so guess will eventually get used to it. Background is also far too bright

Love the picture quality though

Now I know what those old prop captains felt like when those new fangled jets appeared....end of an era

I like the new site's mobile-friendliness but I much prefer the old site's colour-scheme and asthetics. The new site does not have nearly enough contrast and has a lot of wasted space...

Oh boy. I have skull avatar, "friends" and "foes" (all of which also have a skull avatar) instead of an RU rating, a completely useless "timeline", and I can "like" photos. On the other hand, Information that used to take up a quarter screen now covers three, which I need to scroll down through.

They have turned it into Airlinerbook.

I prefer white-on-blue. Much easier on the eyes than a white background; white-on-blue evokes aviation, too.

In addition to the aforementioned Starred Topics function, I also miss the Respect Rating function; such allowed me to, when desired (e.g., on a long thread) skip the zeroes in pursuit of replies by the more-reputable posters.

I posted in the other thread announcing the changes, but this will take some time to used to, like when an airline launches a new livery and everyone complains about for a month until they forget it

I like it, it's modern and fresh. I do agree however that the colors are way off, the gray is a bit harsh on the eyes.

I'm heartbroken. The new forums are awful. Before airliners.net got bought out by Demand Media it was treasured. It was important. The owners and moderators operated the site because the site because they loved it. It had quirks and flaws, but it had personality. It wasn't phpBB Discussion Site #22453 That's About Airliners, it was airliners.net.

Now it's cheap, pre-packaged code obviously put up by somebody who's never a) used airliners.net, and b) *cared* about airliners.net and just wants my ad-click revenue with no regard for why I come here or why I love the site. I don't just dislike the new layout; I'm actually insulted by it.

It's like A.Net went Eurowhite!!! The horror!!!!

But seriously, I think I like the changes. It'll take some getting used to, but I'm more amazed that the admin team was able to make a change to modern software at all. From my amateur eyes, the old site seemed highly customized.

On the old site, once you opened a particular topic it would show you "5 posts unread" and you could jump to the first unread post .... does this new site keep track of unread posts or do you just have to scroll through til you find them?

Disregard ... I figured it out

Works better on mobile than the previous site. What I will say is that the 747 was part of the brand, and I would have kept that somehow.

All things change and the old site now matter how much I loved it, and I've been using the site since it was started, was showing signs of age.

Well done to the folks who have worked hard on this, it's never easy pleasing everybody but moving with the times, new architecture etc is vital for any business.

Look forward to using for many more years to come. Can't wait to see the site on my desktop.

Very initial reaction: site looks much more modern. Thanks!

Some issues remain, e.g., when I wasn't logged on, going through the login process brought me back to the home page rather than the thread that I was trying to comment.

Not a fan.

The colors are really too bright. The light on dark theme was easier to read as well as determine how things were grouped and organized. The giant photos at the top of the home page are a bit annoying, especially with them auto-playing. The search for photos being buried. Not a fan.

P.S. I'm a User Experience Designer.

I feel that this is my biggest complaint, everything is big and more crowded than before. I liked the very obvious organization between each segment on the old front page. ESPECIALLY, the smallish thumbnails for the top 5 photos.
