The forum search is improved. At lease it produces a reply:

"Sorry, search could not be performed. More information about this failure has been logged in the error log."

Searching for "United" in the entire forum...

Yeah, I thought about it... I'll never like this design. I joined in 1999 and I think I'm calling it quits here. This forum is good for news, but in general it's a bit of an industry joke. Very few experts, weird fanboy culture, and lots of silly PC nonsense...that kind of thing. This new re-design takes the only thing this forum had going for it, simple, easily-readable elegance, and trashes it in favor of a generic, advertisement-strewn wasteland. One that is very hard to read.

It's been real.

Probably going to take time to get used to...like any change. Personally I prefer the old site...but that's what it was...an old site...but with the classic look so many of us liked.
I will get used to this new one I hope.

Wow... horrible. I doubt I will continue here.

First, the design is bland as hell. You can change the "Airliners" on top by "Britney Spears" and it would work as well. The sad thing is that it is true.

Second, whoever changed it doesn't understand what the "Civil Aviation" is about.

Civil Aviation is an impossible mix where one thread about a new Ryanair base in Bulgaria is next to another one about what is going on in Milwaukee Airport and next to another one about Boeing's finances. That I think is what made this forum interesting. An amateur mix of everything aviation, and you choose from the large menu on the front screen.

Having such a compact view gave you an overview and the chance to see some thread that fits well with your interests (to be honest what happens in Milwaukee is not of my interest)

Now you open the Civil Aviation General Page and you have like 10-15 (on a laptop) threads... none is of my interest... I am not going to keep moving pages, sorry!

P.S. I'm a User Experience Designer.
I concur, just awful! Being user friendly on the desktop version which most of us use is just not here!

From what I have seen so far, I am not impressed.

It seems these changes where more about Demand Media trying to increase advertising revenue rather than improving the site.

It requires more clicks to navigate, I agree the pages are harder to read and some of the features that made navigating the older site easier no longer exist.

Like many of the changes that DM has made, I have to call this one a miss also.

I feel like I'll get a headache after a little while of looking at, not to mention reading, the forum. The previous blue was so much better... I can't tell where starred topics are. I like being able to see all the topics on one page. The emoticon selection has gone completely generic. If there are any good changes to the forum, I haven't found 'em yet...
I feel completely disoriented when trying to get around this site. I'm sure I'll get used to the changes, but not the ones in the forum. Please change the color. Heck, I'd like the forum 100% back to the way it was before...

JohnKrist, will the changes people have mentioned be implemented soon? Color scheme, spacing, and search function not working (still!) are the biggest issues. Please can you tell us that the developers will address these changes soon?

Does this mean we can do away with the multi-part "Plane-X Production Thread Part 57" thing and just keep using the same thread?

Although I don't know if that's better when you're getting up to 20,000 pages in the same thread...

Thanks again, but I think we're at cross purposes. I don't want to replace the wretched death skull with a photo, I'd be quite happy with the blank face that other people seem to have. But I can't work out how to do it.

Hi, I don't know where my reply went.

Click on the three horizontal bars at the top right hand corner of the page. A menu will appear on the left hand side of the screen. Click Account and Settings. Only thing is the photo sizes are limited.

You may have to log out and log back in again to get it to work.

The new site works best on my iPad where I spend most of my time browsing the web. It's much better than the old website's non-responsive mobile version - no more zooming & scrolling right to read all the posts, and certainly it's much more easy to post & quote other people.

I agree completely. The new site looks just like all the other cookie cutters out there. Blah, more difficult to navigate and frustrating, even with the new instructions. Maybe you could use a different template -- or make the new one easier to deal with?

Thanks again, but there are no three horizontal bars anywhere. Three is a sign saying "change avatar" under the death skull and there is a green box saying "control panel," but nowhere does it say how to change the avatar. I don't even want an avatar and I certainly don't want a death skull.

I've emailed the support desk. They put it there - they can take it out.

Pros and cons of the old and the new. This is definitely better than the old on a mobile phone, but I like the old color palette and density of topic summaries.

I do feel that the top banner should read not simply Airliners but Airliners.net. That's the name, the brand, the old friend.

In any case thanks much to the A.net crew for keeping us going all these years and moving us boldly into the future today!

Lots of issues with this 'improvement'. My main ones being it is now a lot slower to read and post, So much empty space and so many pages to see the topics I could have seen at a glance. I don't have time to go pursuing through multiple pages to find a few interesting topics. This will undoubtedly lead to topics dying out a lot faster as most people wont bother loading a whole new page just to see a handful of more topics which is a disastrous outcome.

My other main issue is this is barely readable. The font is so small, and the colour choice was obviously made by someone who hates eyes. There is barely any contrast. I am young with good eyes, yet It still hurts to read.

The site now has 0 personality, and that's sad.

Additionally, my laptop is cheap and quite low powered, the changes have made this site incredibly laggy on it.

Where are the flags next to the posters? What's with the dramatically dimished number of emoticons? Why am I reading text in grey over a white background? Why is there no margining? I see that you posted instructions on how to navigate the new site, but shouldn't it be self-evident?

Revert.

The only negative is the colors. Not very nice on the eyes. Glad they got rid of the Flags/RR. Too many people thought they were special with the RR rating. I like the photo search engine.

There are a lot of issues, some of which I could adjust to. The fact that I can now view users' real names without their consent is an extremely serious issue and a serious breach of trust of people who used to post sensitive information from inside airlines (FYI, I'm not one of them, but I now know the real names of several). Frankly, that's just awful and gives the whole project an F.

Before in one page we could see 100 topic titles : it was very efficient to quickly look at what's new in the aviation world. Now we have to scroll and scroll and change pages... it's not efficient. It's much less attractive. It's nice to have some new editing functionalities but don't forget core elements of a forum like the readibility.

I'm not a fan of the new site. I can appreciate making it easier to view on a mobile device, however, I actually preferred the old site with my mobile device. I was able to see significantly more topics on one page, and I don't see the option to open a topic and skip to the first unread message like I was able to before. I also find it annoying to have so few replies per page so I now need to scroll through more pages than before. But honestly, the worst part is the color scheme. It is so bland and generic and all the white gives me a headache. I suppose in this era of updating liveries to generic Eurowhite, airliners.net (excuse me, just Airliners now) is following the trend and just threw white paint all over itself. I will continue to use the site for the next few days, but unfortunately unless some changes are made, I think I will more than likely just move on from this site. All the charm is gone.

Blindingly bright white background for the oh-so-very-trendy grey print, and in a font that is both tiny and not all that easy to read. I'm sure it looks whiz-bang to the form over function crowd, but it is hard to read.

Tons of white-space, not needed.

My. How cutting-edge. Just like countless other sites trying so hard to be trendy, and just end up being harder to navigate.

Also, where is the button that lets me isolate the topics I have flagged?

There is nothing wrong with change if the changes are improvements. All you have done is taken a good, basic, fast-loading, easy-to-read and easy-to-navigate site, and made it a jumble.

Oh, and, are the two letter airline and three letter airport codes updated?

Yes, I agree, a serious breach of privacy. I for one am grateful that I am on here within the first few hours to check out what has been done with the data, or what may have been overlooked and slipped through the cracks so to speak.

I also don't like the emoticons on this site by the way. They were very good on the old one, I don't think I will be using them here.

PS. I agree the comment about flags and RR. IMHO.

Just some general observations, many of which echo what others have already written. I'm using a desktop so my experience could be different from those using other devices

Firstly, there is far too much white and grey. I've tried all the display settings and light contrasts for my screen and I still find it difficult to read.

No issues with ads but then I'm using adblock plus on google chrome browser which I assume has taken care of them.

The forum search function is unsurprisingly useless.

I'm not sure what the strange triangle widget sort of thing on the browser tab is supposed to be. At first glance, I thought I was it an Arabic language site tab.
