The Correct Valentine's Day Song

Sun Feb 10, 2019 6:32 pm

Everyone's least favorite holiday is around the corner, Valentine's Day, aka Single Awareness Day.

Since this year I'll probably forget to get a girlfriend again, I'll be partaking in the alternate name for it.

Anywho, back on topic. The correct Valentine's Day song is P.Y.T. by the King of Pop himself.

It all depends on how you look at it: I prefer to think of February 15th as Single And Lovin' It Day, aka Dodged-A-Bullet-Day, which is traditionally celebrated by buying and consuming premium chocolates in heart-shaped containers at half or less of their original suggested retail price.

Take it from a guy from whom every piece of romantic advice begins with the phrase "Don't let this happen to you…", It is far, FAR better to be alone and wish you were with somebody than to be with somebody and wish to (insert deity of your choice here) that you were alone.

I'm no fan of Kanye West, but considering the overtly commercial and materialistic nature of Valentine's Day, Kanye's "Gold Digger" would seem to be an obvious contender.

Good one! Heck, that whole album is great.

For those not familiar with the original version of the song, here's the video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0LAs7X5ybE

Wow. I was familiar with the Nazareth version but had no idea that was originally recorded by Roy Orbison. Thanks for mentioning it!

The Everly Brothers recorded it also in 1965. I like Roy Orbison's version the best.

Another source says the Everly Brothers first recorded the song in 1960.

Excuse me for my curiosity but why do you consider this as a Valentine‘s Day song? It’s a song about a former prostitute, correct me if I am wrong.

Because Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with love, only the €€ or $$ matters...

As with anything it's up for interpretation, but I always thought it was about a current prostitute whose boyfriend is trying to get her to give up the life as she's getting ready to go out and ply her trade.

If we're going to go with Police songs, one that is pleasant on the surface but extremely creepy if you take the time to listen to the lyrics is "Every Breath You Take", aka The Stalker Anthem-

Oh, you are talking to an engineer. So not the best guy in interpretations. I guess you are correct, he is still trying to convince her. I just checked the lyrics quickly before I asked Marcelh and got confused by this line:

You don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over

True, but he goes on to say:
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right

Good one! Thematically similar (at least the video is) and from the same period is Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy"*- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAJNwPWVmNc

*Watching that video again for the first time in a long time, I've got to wonder how much that inspired Tim Burton while he was working on "Beetlejuice", or if indeed Mr. Burton had a hand in directing the video? Either way, there sure are a lot of common images in the two works.
