Sabbaticals

If you guys ever took a sabbatical from work, how did you guys spend it? Did you work on creative projects, long term traveling, etc?

I took two 8 weeks (4 week sabbatical, 4 weeks leave) to travel around Asia. Started in Singapore and ended in Beijing. Along the way I visited the spectacular JiuZhaiGou Valley National Park [1] in Sichuan province. Very lucky to have gone when I did, since a magnitude 7.0 earthquake wrecked it [2] in 2017.

I have done two sabbaticals (actually, working sabbaticals that take me away from my normal workplace to do work somewhere else).

In 2010, I left UCSF for a month to work with a professor at the University of Calgary, learning 3-D craniofacial imaging and morphometrics. I was a PhD student then.

In 2017, I left the University of Colorado Denver for a month to visit the Universidade de Sao Paulo Faculdade de Odontologia (dental school) in Sao Paulo and the Hospital de Reabilitacao de Anomalias Craniofaciais in Bauru, Brazil, giving lectures to dental students, talks at a symposium, clinical and operating theatre visits, a TV interview, a class on the upper airway obstruction commonly found in Treacher Collins syndrome, and a research project involving measurement of the volume of the airway in the same syndrome. I was a postdoctoral fellow then.

Now this is an interesting topic, sure have a story to tell on this point. Europe based, my operator closed down a primary hub! So as not to cause too much bad publicity, a lot of effort was put into finding jobs for all the Ops guys that were being made redundant etc with compeditors in what was a good job market back then. More senior staff were offered generous ´Golden parachutes/redundancy packages´. So I took that and bought myself a lovely 10 year old premium European sports car (quite cheaply) and did a major Euro roadtrip for 7 months, best time of my life! French Wine, Dutch Cheese, Belgian waffles... what a sabbatical!
Thereafter went to a compediter for 5 years at the previous location, only to rejoin the initial operator 5 years and one day later at a new location they had established. My second stint with them lasted over 10 years until once again, hard times and voluntary redundancies were in the air. So I took a second ´golden parachute´, fulfilled my ´fishing bucket list for this sabbatical (Salmon in Homer/AK and Scandinavia) , Trout fishing in France and Germany etc etc.

Thanks for the 2 golden Handshakes guys and 2 super sabbaticals. Stint in the ME thereafter and dare I say European labour laws are a great thing!
some you lose, others you can´t win!

here what you first worlders call "sabbatical" it's called "resignation"
I've never heard anyone taking such a long period off work, thus maintaining its workplace, apart from people with serious illnesses, that ended their paid period (max 200 days), then they can ask for an "unpaid leave" for up to 6 months, but the job giver is not required to give this period, as the person can simply be fired.

I don't live in the first world but I've known people in my social circles who went on a paid sabbatical.

My father's one of them - he went to Sweden to conduct a research project for 9 months, but sadly I wasn't lucky enough to follow him to Sweden because of me being a very picky eater. At the time, he was a lecturer at a major local university.

And another friend of mine from school went with his father to Scotland for his father's sabbatical. His father works at the same university (although different faculties).

Where is "here"? Sounds like you don't know what a sabbatical is.

I'm from a 3rd world country. I grew up near a university, and lots of my class mates had parents who were academics and went on sabbaticals (taking the family with them). Of course, in a university setting, there's a lot more benefit for the university to have their staff take time out to work on something unrelated to their day-to-day duties. Maybe less so for other industries but it will vary.
