What’s your favorite fragrance?

Sat Jan 05, 2019 7:08 pm

I’m a big fragrance junkie, but we all have that one fragrance we rely on. My signature is Bowmakers by D.S. & Durga. I discovered it at a boutique in NYC that specializes in niche fragrances. It’s reminiscent of the woody scent of a vintage violin. I’m a fan of anything with smokey, wood or incense notes. I’m not a fan of department store scents because I feel like the men’s selections smell the same — fresh, citrusy, sweet and synthetic.

What about you guys/gals? Do you prefer niche fragrances? What types of notes do you prefer?

Hey guys,
I wasn't really into fragrances until about five years ago when i was given a bottle of Armani Acqua Di Gio.... And haven't looked back. My second bottle was Hugo Boss (the original). Those two are my absolute favourites and I use them all the time.
I now wear fragrances every day and have a little display of five fav bottles in my ensuite. Another five bottles are in the cupboard below. I never wear the same fragrance two days running.
The latest fragrance I have 'gotten into' is Davidoff Cool Water and all of its variations, courtesy of a special friend who thinks it suits me.
I want to try Versace Dylan Blue and D&G Lemon Zest when the two of them come down in price a bit, lol.
Cheers

I'm definitely a fan of the smoky/woody/incense notes, but they're not the "Flavor Of The Month" right now (fragrances like everything else have fads and run in cycles and I'm old enough to remember when the scents I like were in fashion) so it's hard to find anything I really like. Kenneth Cole's Black is what I wear on the rare occasion I do wear cologne because on me, guys like it and women hate it.

Bunumuring, Cool Water is fine but I've noticed a tendency among those who wear it to wear WAY WAY WAY too much of it, so be mindful that unlike most colognes it grows instead of fading with wear. You don't want your cologne announcing your arrival ten minutes before you get there, do you?

I’m not a fan of too many of them. Some people must use the whole damned bottle of cologne or perfume. When they do that, I will go elsewhere. Or you have to open a window because they stink the whole place out.

But, I don’t mind Truefitt and Hill 1805, that is subtle.

Hey guys,
I totally agree about the overuse of fragrance.
I have noticed that Cool Water tends to grow with wear. I found D&G The One also does that.
i was given a bottle of an Issey Miyake a few years ago that I didn't exactly love, but every time I wore it I was complimented and/or asked about it... So I persevered wearing it and only just finished the bottle a few months ago. Not sure whether I will replace it or not....
My youngest teenage son wears Tommy For Men exclusively. I sometimes sneak a spray of it and I like it, but it's his 'signature' fagrance and he wouldn't let me wear it generally. My eldest teenage son wouldn't be caught dead wearing fragrances, and even chooses his deodorant by the least-smell possible!
Cheers,
Bunumuring

PS: I have a late-thirties work colleague who is great mate of mine and he greets me every morning with the name of the fragrance he thinks I am wearing that day! Probably twice a week he is correct. He lets his wife choose and buy him fragrances as he says she can match his skin to the fragrance better than he can. He prefers Calvin Klein and Davidoff fragrances but is one of these people who is heavy hand with the spraying....

Fall and Winter:
Creed Original Vetiver, Boucheron Jaipur, and Crabtree & Evelyn Sandlewood.

Spring and Summer:
Guerlain Habit Rouge, Caswell-Massey Newport and Crabtree & Evelyn West Indian Lime. Applied after a cool shower I find these especially refreshing after baking on the beach or poolside all day.

My original old favorites were Patchouli Oil,Jade East and English Leather back in the 1960's.
The Original Davidoff I could buy in the late 1980's is gone, I guess. Haven't seen it in years. It had a very pleasing fragrance.

I only use little bit, though. I don't want to reek.

Hey ImperialEagle!
Welcome mate, I haven't seen a post from you in ages!
I agree with you about Crabtree and Evelyn : great products! I 'tested' the Guerlain you list in a boutique in Sydney a while ago and liked it. The others I haven't tested yet...

Justin, how do the fragrances work with your migraine? I always thought that such smells trigger headaches and migraines.

I for one don't like fragrances at all. I still have a bottle of Azzaro which I bought some 20 years ago. Can those after shaves turn foul?

The only thing in this regard I use is an after shave balm with only light fragrance.

Crisp and citrus based for everyday: Clinique Chemistry for Men.
Special occasions (and to celebrate my G&T favourite drink): Juniper Sling by Penhaligons. Marketing material says.

Nothing brings jubilance and joy to the senses quite like… Gin! And now a cocktail, or Sling, a tribute to les années folle, the exuberant 1920s that roared that is one part crisp, evening-elegance, one part party-playful effervescence.

The perfume is made with Gin berry Juniper freshness, a London herbal blend. It first teases with aromatic Angelica (root and seed). The heart next races to the vitality of cinnamon, pepper and cardamon. Orris creates a smooth melody of softer cherry-woods. Notes of leather, brandy - a liqorous, vigorous base - hit the spot. Brown sugar wrapped in amber lingers. A souvenir of warm intimate moments. Intoxicating in the very best way. A drink for all seasons. A complex cocktail of paradise.

Apply liberally.
Anyone for one more?

Instead of MY favorite fragrance I still go by my wife's favorite - Obsession. In April we will hit 50 years of marriage so I guess it must work. Almost as important is that it has a great shaving balm - as good as I have found.

Fresh baked cinnamon rolls, hard to find in a bottle though. Married 56 years this year, so it must work. ;)

Since some folk either have no or are reluctant to list a favorite fragrance, it probably couldn't hurt to expand this thread to include, with CitizenJustin's blessing, of course, least favorite fragrances as well. I'll start with two:

Lagerfeld by Karl Lagerfeld- It was the "Flavor of the Month" before Calvin Klein introduced his fragrances, or at least before they gained traction in the marketplace, and to me it smelled exactly like a hayloft.

Grey Flannel- It didn't even smell like cologne, it smelled very chemical-y, like something you'd use to strip paint off metal.

Fragrance doesn’t tend to trigger my headaches and I’m thankful for that! Very sweet or synthetic fragrances can sometimes give me a headache but nowhere near a migraine.

Prada Amber Pour Homme Intense. It is a myrrh based scent. It's a very modern twist on a classic barbershop fragrance. It's a seriously underrated fragrance that not many people talk about.

Also an honorable mention is Paco Rabanne One Million Prive. It's a very sweet, masculine cinnamon scent. Very reminiscent of a fireball whiskey cocktail. It's great stuff for this time of year.

My favorite one is La Liturgie des Heures by Jovoy.
But I'm too shy to wear it everyday. And have rarely occasion to enjoy it among people (most of my mates find it annoying).

Hey mate,
I have a 'soft spot' for Brut and Old Spice and both have had arguably successful 'retro' Adelaide raising campaigns in recent years here in Australia.
I had the same experience as you growing up, Father's Day presents were always the trilogy of socks n jocks n Brut in my family, with Old Spice 'the' birthday present!

I used to like Drakkar and California. I think I still have a bottle of California somewhere. I bought a bottle of Ocean Pacific a long, long, long time ago from Dillards in GJC because the bottle is cool. It has the cologne in the inner bottle and a blue oil maze thing in the outer bottle. I have a bad-ex memory of Aspen. Our homecoming queen used to wear her father's Santa Fe and it really worked on her.

Never would have bought it though, it was a gift. I hate diesel engines with a passion.

Everyone compliments me on Issey Miyake. Which is fine, because it's not very expensive. I have some woodsier colognes, but don't wear them as much. I tend to prefer more citrus scents.

And by "using", I am really down to a few times a year; I generally avoid fragrances.
