Sparked by a different thread.

I think an obvious choice is The Breakfast Club

Footloose is another option, i believe my wife would go this route. Also available for two generations.

The remake of Red Dawn sucked.

My wife would go with 16 candles or Father of the Bride.

Gah! No kidding. So many good movies on this list. Must be why they're trying to remake them.

I hope they don't try to remake the goonies and end up ruining it.

I don't think there is a correct one, I also think "coming-of-age" covers a wide range of ages.

Then what do you expect from such a movie, a depiction of your own adolescence, something darker, something lighter ?

In France a good number of such movies are about sexuality, sometimes "normal" sexuality, but often it features some kind of illegal/fringe relationship, or prostitution, rape, drugs, etc.

A couple years ago came out a movie called Bang Gang, you can imagine its content from the title : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3838728/

A movie that affected me a lot at the time was Garden State.

All nice movies, but there can only be one correct one in this genre: Boyhood (2014)

Never seen any of the above mentioned films we all know, the right answer is the Lion King.

I picked Sixteen Candles because it came out when I was 14 instead of 12 and also because my older sister and her friend who saw it said Farmer Ted was totally me. I saw it a few days later with my best friend and everyone thought I even looked exactly like him in that movie (and only that movie not much at all alike as adults) but it was more the way I acted at that age. Ironically when I was 16 (and still looked like he did at 14, I was a late bloomer) I had a somewhat similar experience as him in the best scene, although sadly for me the ending wasn’t quite as happy as it was for Ted. Spring Break sophomore year I was at the beach house parties of high school juniors and seniors (sophomores really didn’t do spring break but my parents and I were staying in an adjacent beach town and I snuck out.) Way after midnight and after several beers (I probably weighed 100 pounds or so) I went in the bedroom with several girls who were also drinking and laid down with them still drinking (everyone slept wherever and the room had double beds pushed together). This beautiful blond cheerleader who was a senior had either passed out or fallen asleep hours ago and I guess we woke her up and I am laying back beside her. She takes her head of the pillow opens her eyes to me, smiles, then goes right back to sleep. I crash right beside her shortly thereafter. This is one of the last nights of Spring Break. The next week at school, as a total surprise to me, there is a rumor going around school that we hooked up. As much as I wished it were true, I sadly had to deny it, but many people didn’t believe me. What made it sorta awkward was she was my sister’s age and in her same circle of friends (a big part of the reason I was always welcome at senior parties) and her sister was my age and in my circle of friends. My sister put an end to the rumor really quick though and to my inflated ego lol.

Alice in wonderland!

But I'm curious, we are going by the "coming of age story" archetype right? Or is it it's own unique movie genre because a lot of those movies aren't exactly what come to my mind when I'm thinking of best examples of the archetype.

Although the guy posting above me is thinking in the same vein as me.

The school where they filmed this movie was about a block from where I lived at the time. My apartment building is visible in the background in the last shot where the guy is walking across the football field.

Hey guys,
So many great movies mentioned!
Personally I loved Dead Poets Society (the ONLY movie I liked Robin Williams in...) and Goonies.
I have never seen Breakfast Club (except the bits shown in Pitch Perfect, blush) nor have I seen Sixteen Candles.
Cheers,

I am surprised no one mentioned Last American Virgin, another favorite of mine.

St. Elmo’s Fire and About Last Night are two of my other favorite ones, but those portray college age and just after college.

I also loved Less than Zero. I don’t think there is any brat pack movie I didn’t really like.

Most of these movies listed so far are for those who came of age in the 80's.

For those who came of age in the second half of the nineties, it was definitely American Pie.

Can't Hardly Wait, She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless, Never Been Kissed are some others from that era that stand out.

Hey guys,
More contemporary 'coming of age' movies would include the Australian movie 'Breathe' and the Hollywood movie 'Love, Simon' which were both pretty good according to my sons and I.'Call Me By Your Name' could be considered a contemporary coming of age movie as well, but I didn't like that movie at all.

Wait! Hold up! Hear me out!

Luke Skywalker went from beeing a teenager bulleyeing womp rats in his T16 back home to the highest level a Jedi can reach. If thats not "coming of age", IDK what is.
