I've always had cats despite us having dogs at home when I was growing up. Kittens are wonderful and don't crap all over the garden in huge nuclear turds. Most come housetrained straight out of the box.
My last cat went from tiny blue-eyed ball of fluff to a stately battleaxe of particular habits over her 23 year life. A lot of dogs don't even manage half that lifespan. Our latest one is just mad. It's the independence of cats that wins it for me. Get them neutered early on, watch their diet and you have a friend for decades.

For me it's Cats all the way!
Wow 23? That is awesome! Back in September we had to put down a cat who was 15 years old (he had cancer). We had him for just over 14 years. And we also currently have a brother and sister who are 10 years old now. Their mom was a stray who we took care of and when she had kittens we took them in and raised them.

I think three- or four-week-old kittens are the cutest furry creatures on the planet.
I love dogs too but would not want to go through the above-mentioned turdiness of having to house-train a puppy.

Dogs crave attention. I've seen very few cats that do the same. My cat is one of those; I can't sit on the couch without him running up to me and wanting to rub against me or sit on my lap.

I love kittens, unfortunately they grow into cats. I hate cats.
Give me a puppy any day. They grow into dogs, and dogs are awesome.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had a puppy since my late teens. The 5 dogs I’ve had since moving away from NY have all been shelter dogs that were over a year old when I brought them home.

Three days ago was my cat's first birthday with me. He's a six year old rescue cat and he's been a problem. Three times I've had the cat carrier out intending to take him back, but all three times I've given in. I figure I should help my local Humane Society out, they don't euthanize so they would be stuck with him for life, and he would be stuck in a cage. He's bit me twice badly (he goes for the back of the hand) I used to think I had a cat with the personality of a squirrel.
But he's finally come around, where he used to watch the door waiting for a chance to escape now he doesn't even want to go outside and when he does, he's back in two minutes. He's become affectionate, he follows me around now, likes being groomed and he sleeps in bed with me (he wouldn't come near my bed for the first 7 months or so). So now he's a pretty good cat.

Couldn't have said it better. Kittens are cute, cats are just boring and annoying. Puppies are awesome and adult doggies are lovely.

Cats boring? Try a secret Birman they are everything but boring and if not quite a handfull. We have a male Ragdoll and female Birman and it's like having two dog's. They keep me busy all day long with their antics.

Why choose? I have both: two cats, two dogs, and just added a new kitten.
Each is has a unique personality, each has their moments.

Cats are just waiting for the proper opportunity to kill you.
Seriously though.
I have had both in my life, and cats are more personable on their own terms as they get older, however they are and will remain independent.
Dogs on the other hand are very lovable and great companions as they get older. They also love to play and interact with you.

It all depends on breed, some cat breeds are like dog's and very dependable on humans. Ours are 9 and 7 and need to be with us all the time and interact.
