It had two identical sister-ships, Olympic and Britannic (nee Gigantic) and each of them were beset with their own tragedies.
(Colored re-touch of Olympic (left) being repaired, and Titanic (right) being constructed; Belfast, Ireland, 1911)
- First, Olympic collided with a navy destroyer, and while badly damaged, it did manage to maintain its integrity.
- Then, Titanic............... well, ya know.
- Lastly, Britannic hit a mine-field off the coast of Greece, and quickly sank.
All three occurrences had one peculiar factor in common:
A nurse named Violet Jessop was working aboard each ship at the time of its destruction, and managed to survive all three.
And what did she do immediately after surviving the third incident?
Apply and get hired as a nurse for a shipping line.
.....I guess they figured she'd stick around.
