Updated after confirmation by BBC: Northern Virginia to win Amazon HQ2 bid

Sat Nov 03, 2018 10:48 pm

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/am ... 6750ee4493

While no official announcement has been made yet, there are a lot of indications pointing to a deal being reached very soon. Such as several nearby office buildings now being pulled off the real estate market, Delta loading a second daily IAD-SEA flight last weekend, and economic experts declaring the region as the frontrunner.

Should be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks.

It was always clear that the DC area would win. From the moment Jeff Bezos bought his palace in DC.

DC has the biggest upside. Regulatory concerns are a big deal, and it is easiest to butter the bread of regulators and Senators by being in the place they care about, the Washington area. Their kids can play together, get married etc.

In all seriousness, there is an adequate workforce in DC, good transit, it's a very attractive city, and Crystal City has an under-utilized set of office real estate. This will be a coup for that area. Property owners will be delighted beyond joy. Renters might as well start planning to leave, or get a better job. It's a good choice and the area CAN realistically support a mega-base right there.

Amazon is beyond "money" phase and now needs to worry about cementing real power. The government grows more corrupt each day. That is both a threat and a real opportunity, so you might as well be close to the most powerful and rich thing on Earth, the US government.

Really gross how corporations hold cities hostage and how much news this has made in the U.S. Maybe the U.S. should focus on providing incentives for universal health care, decreasing homelesness, ensuring reproducitve rights for women, better public education, higher wages for teachers, diminishing the wage gap for women, providing better public transportation, and supporting small business instead of providing tax breaks and incentives for the wealthy like jeff. It is sad that corporations have so much value in the world rather than the masses. This deal will only benefit the few at the top of Amazon.

Of course, corporate blackmail never has any other agenda other than saving money for the corporations and the big stockholders while extracting money from the masses who pay the taxes lost to the corporate giveaways.

I'm glad. Really didn't want that oppressive employer Amazon having that presence in Texas.

Cities competing for a large company and the money/jobs it'll bring in precludes "the US" from focusing on other issues?

Not exactly following your logic...

There is no logic only anger. As is usual the things we loved in the past are now the most evil things in the world. Only a matter of time until Tesla and Space X are the most vile and hated companies destroying America and the world.

Its the same thing as someone saying they don't protest because they have a job.

Its almost like people can do more than one thing at a time. Who'd a thunk?

This is a hilarious reply from you, considering supporting "oppressive" employers is literally something you vote for via your life long support of Republicans.

Not gonna lie, was hoping they would come down here to Atlanta. We've got Norfolk Southern looking to move down here as well though which is a nice consolation prize - at least if the city council doesn't screw up the deal.

And you're from Texas. All your posts make perfect sense now. Another piece of the puzzle...

Congrats to Amazon and NOVA. Smart decision.

Well this didn't age well.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-pla ... 1541446552

WSJ source says they will split the HQ2 evenly between two cities. Northern Virginia is still in the running for that half, but NY and Dallas also in the running apparently.

What would they get from NY that they wouldn't already be getting from DC?

In the case of NY a much deeper talent pool. Many in the tech community would rather starve in NY or San Francisco than work in some suburban DC office park.

Interesting choice; my guess is they think they can poach talent. I thought they would pick an East coast HQ and the second would be in the central or mountain time zone.

IMHO this won't impact much on the commercial aviation front. At MOST AS may restore a frequency from the VX integration cuts. That's the long & short of it.

In regards to their crystal city location selection, think DCA, not IAD. They're setting up shop right next to DCA.

It does seem like a huge missed opportunity to bring value/jobs/development to somewhere other than one of the most populous areas of the country.

I'm sure YYZ is a little disappointed as well, although I'm not sure that was ever really likely.

It's great that we've had like 10 posts without a huge political fight, and I'm NOT trying to start one, but...

How do taxes work with these new HQs? They are still a Washington (state) company, so they're primarily under that umbrella? Or do they gave to pay DC and NYC taxes? Any idea on tax breaks?

I know Amazon is a more "progressive" company (don't freak out, I know that statement pisses off both sides lol) but they're still a business, I'm surprised they didn't pick a southern state that probably has less taxes. Talent, location, connections, etc only go so far, no?

And five miles from the White House. Given that the company will have to navigate a complex set of regulations as it grows, proximity to the heart of DC and K street makes good sense.

Lol, the same way that tax breaks elsewhere work. Ultimately, it's funny how the company chose pricey areas over cheap areas, perhaps they cared more about their own breaks then the breaks their workforce might get, perhaps they were simply emulating the bi-coastal nature of many of their ultimate takeover targets / immediate competitors. Most media companies for example have a solid presence at both coasts, but not much in between. Similar for Google and advertising in NYC, also bi-coastal.

Tech itself isn't as concentrated anymore, but for those jobs a decentralized model can work well to give something to everyone, e.g. office in Utah, office in Texas, office in Florida. As for southern states, the cost of living here is catching up PDQ to places like LA, perhaps even faster than the outstanding rate of growth we see down here. Lots of other companies are moving here every month, so if AMZN would rather invigorate already transforming neighborhoods a la London Docklands that's alright with me. We'll see plenty of growth without them, traffic here is already a lot slower that it was and house prices are much higher too.

As for talent, location, connections, we still travel to SF for Dreamforce or whatever, same with LA or NY. But we don't get p.s. service out here the way we used to in SF, LA, NY. Many of our connections think we're kinda stupid for making the move here, but most of us wouldn't trade it back. It's harder to draw the right talent to the south, but people should also understand that there's a lot more diversity here than a stereotype might suggest. It's just more boring here, that's all. It's not California, we don't have great beaches and mountains, and it's certainly not NY. Once you get over that and see how far your $251k/yr salary will go in a place like DFW vs. SFO / LAX / SEA / NYC you'll just smile and be just fine with the endless prairie.

I was surprised and disappointed (a bit) that Boston didn't get it. But NOVA is a happening place and it looks to be a good option.

DeltaMD90 wrote:

Three possible reasons:
1. Culture. Amazon stated they want their HQ to be in a culturally similar area like Seattle. The cities are bubbles but are dominated by states whose governments probably are not too inviting.
2. Infrastructure. How many cities in the South have a good public transport system that can allow employees to commute? Can the cities contain the expected surge in traffic? Do they have an airport with service to many other cities (focus city or hub)?
3. Talent pool. Of the cities that meet points 1 and 2, how big of a talent pool can you get locally? How many people would be willing to move there?

Taxes aren't everything.

With all the money has gone to Amazon as incentives, there will be less money for state projects. The real growth comes after Amazon hires 25,000. Until then just low wage construction jobs.

Any rumors on what kind of incentives NYC, NOVA offered? NJ allegedly offered $7B.

Confirmed: Crystal City & New York. Nashville is going to be expanded too.

Amazon plans to build major new campuses in New York City and next to the Pentagon near Washington DC, and expand its operations in Nashville.

The decision comes 14 months after the tech giant kicked off a continent-wide competition by announcing a search for a "second headquarters" location.

The contest drew 238 bids, as local officials leapt at the chance to land a potentially transformative investment.

The three locations could create up to 55,000 jobs in the next two decades.

Amazon said it expected to invest about $2.5bn each in New York and Arlington, where it has planned offices that will host as many as 25,000 "high-paying jobs".

It said Nashville, Tennessee would become Amazon's new East Coast hub of operations, creating another 5,000 jobs.

In exchange, the firm is due to receive more than $2bn dollars worth in tax benefits and other incentives from the state and local governments.
