Tanzania to hunt down gays

This is a tragedy.

The situation for LGBT citizens in Tanzania has gone from hellish to life threatening. While we’re still fighting for equality in the west, the violence our brothers and sisters face around the world escalates. I don’t hear any gay rights advocates talking about this dire situation. We’re too busy praising upper middle class kids on YouTube with expensive webcams that film gratuitous coming out videos detailing their “struggle”. I’m not diminishing anyone’s experience and I suffered a lot of bullying, but we need to place things into perspective.

Well said. The religious right in this country has put a lot of effort into "outreach," which translates into supporting and educating haters in African countries to criminalize and even execute gay people for doing nothing more than being gay. It is time for the U.S. LGBTQ community to get involved in some outreach of their own, myself included. I'm going to look into organizations defending LGBTQ people in Tanzania, Uganda, etc.

There is no shortage of human rights abuses and atrocities in many countries on earth. Take a good look at the what countries make up the (so called) Human Rights Council of the United Nations.
Look at how many of those countries are in the Middle East. The only safe place for gay people in the whole of North Africa and Middle East is Israel. Tel Aviv is the "gay Mecca" in that part of the world.
Publicly throwing gay people from the rooftops of tall buildings or hanging by crane has become a form of entertainment in Iran.

It's endless evil for people from all walks of life, all faiths, all colors, all sexual persuasions, all economic strata, etc.

Since the world did nothing about the atrocities committed in Zimbabwe against white farmers do you really think the world is going to lift a finger to help gay people being persecuted In Tanzania ?

While there is of course truth and fact behind your statement, it is useless in and of itself as to the point of this topic. And I don't think you find this to be acceptable or the potential threat deserved and earned.

Just because something "is" has no bearing that it is OK or approved or should not have consequences. The topic is about it either happening or being planned to happen and the first step is to get things noticed. Exposure is a starting point to try address something.

Yes, LGBT rights are non-existent in the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar. In some respects the law is worse than on the mainland. For example, the Tanzania Penal Code doesn't mention sex between women but that of Zanzibar does. There a woman can be either fined a hefty sum or be sent to prison for up to five years. Sentences can be imposed on men who engage or attempt to engage in sexual acts with another male. Sentences range from fines and corporal punishment to lengthy terms of imprisonment (up to life). There ae no laws protecting LGBT people from adverse discrimination.

I'm only describing a trend that's happening in politics, Mexico and the US may be more developed but they have not escaped this phenomena

That's awful

Hopefully LGBT tourists do their research before accidentally ending up there

I'm not LGBT but I was planning on visiting for Kili but I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts

Martin Luther King was born in Georgia so one would think that state would extend rights to EVERY legal American there but, sadly, no.

Just because someone was born in one place does not mean that place will extend equality to all.

Please.

These filthy, repulsive 'missionaries' have been infecting African countries with their BS for decades. Sure, we'll build you a well or a school, or teach you English, you just need to convert to our interpretation of the word of God, and the brainwashing begins.

Uganda has been particularly popular for those who gave given up on the anti-LGBT crusade in the US, so focusing their efforts on vulnerable counties that they can manipulate.

It's beyond disgusting. I've come across these US missionaries all over the world. I've seen them prey on the vulnerable. Just horrible.

Human sexuality is likely pretty stable the world around. And that includes per cent of homosexuals, transsexuals, cross dressers, child abusers, pedophiles. Most societies which oppose these things covertly tolerate them, particularly if committed by the powerful, or by 'nobodies'. But sexual transgressions are used as sanctions against the less powerful, women, and political rivals, etc.

Because higher economic conditions and education gave birth to secular social advancement. You think that Europe or North America is somehow special? They were right where Africa is now only a hundred years ago or less. Let’s not forget that the Nazis persecuted homosexuals just as much as Jews, McCarthyism went after any gays in government, Jerry Falwell blamed 9/11 on the gays, and even today fringe religious groups would love to see a genocide of LGBT persons (see the WBC).

Let’s not engage in some kind of white superiority that we are immune to equal levels of discrimination.

I am not. Being homosexual will not see ypu imprisoned or executed in Europe, North, Central or Southern America. Or Australasia.

Just wondered why homosexuality is illegall in nearly all African and Asian nations.

You literally ignored the argument I made. My point is that the rest of the world wasn’t very different not that long ago. Gay rights has progressed amazingly quickly in the grand scheme of things. In the US, sodomy laws were only struck down in 2004 in Lawrence vs Texas and even with that, 25% of Americans say that homosexuality should be discouraged. That was over 50% only 15 years ago. Africa and Asia are still economically and culturally developing. Education in many parts is still low and with it comes dictatorial leaders and a populace who are eager to scapegoat their problems against a group of people who they do not understand and can villianize.

I agree, it's not relevant. It doesn't change or improve this horrible situation. You can't go there and tell them "look what your ancestors did!" because the current population doesn't really identify well with antiquity.

LGBT individuals still face legal discrimination in Thailand.

You are likely thinking of the Kathoey in Thailand but they also still face social ramifications and are somewhat a separate concept from “typical” definitions of transgenderism and homosexuality.

Plain truth is gay people are a minority no matter what country. You can blame it on anything, but, that's a fact.
As a small minority, gay people have become mainstream in most developed countries.
Sadly, the LGBT movement can only survive if everyone is a "victim".
Fortunately, most gays here in the US are not "victims" even though it doesn't fit the LGBT narrative. The gay people I know are busy being "normal" and no longer need the label.

Old cultures change slowly. So no surprise about Tanzania.

What an odd statement, especially in light of the very high assault/murder rate for transgendered folks, attempts by the Trump administration to cease demographic data collection for LGBTs, outrageous “religious freedom” laws designed to legally enshrine discrimination, and arguments by the DOJ that LGBTs are not worthy of EEOC protection.

I’m assuming you’re an ally (?), so scratch the surface a bit deeper and see what’s really going on.

The assault and murder rate has always been way higher for prostitutes than the general population. Transsexual prostitutes are nothing special.

It says three US evangelicals were invited to Uganda to speak about curing gay people, not killing them. It’s called conversion therapy (not debating its effectiveness), not killing therapy. But of course your side has already tried to conflate the two with Pence

So you dispense with it by giving a yawn... while the locals proposed dispensing with it by killing:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 93593.html

"Shortly after Mr Lively’s visit, Ugandan MP David Bahati introduced the first draft of the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which included the death penalty for “serial offenders”. Mr Bahati is a member of The Family, a secretive evangelical group based in Washington DC, whose ranks include current and former US lawmakers, and which also has a close relationship with President Museveni."

:checkmark: The whole point of these evangelicals - and, I would suggest, religious zealots in general - is to prey on and influence weak-minded individuals. It should be no surprise that "preaching" these extreme views would lead to extreme results.

"very high assault/murder rate"
Huh, just what percentage of the world's population would one think is "transgendered"?

Last weekend there were 43 shootings in the most gun-controlled city in the U.S.-----Chicago.
Now that is "very high assault/murder rate" and it happens every weekend there. The liberal mainstream media never mentions it on the national news. Why would one expect them to mention crime to a tiny percentage of the population?

As for most American's, nobody gives a $--t about who is gay, straight or sideways. We all just want to make a decent living, pay less taxes and enjoy our lives. Most people do not allow their "sexuality" define who they are as people, unless, they are very insecure with their sexuality. That's one of the blessings of life here in the U.S.
No President or politicians are going to get in the way of gay people doing whatever they choose. Every U.S. Citizen has the same rights. Hell, gays can get married, now. What a blessing to divorce lawyers!
Just 'sayin.

The role of US evangelists in Uganda's 'kill the gays' bill

It says three US evangelicals were invited to Uganda to speak about curing gay people, not killing them. It’s called conversion therapy (not debating its effectiveness), not killing therapy. But of course your side has already tried to conflate the two with Pence

What do you mean "conflate"? Pence has the exact same mental illness. Republicans/evangelicals calling for murder of gays (or others) is as common as the day is long, whether it's in Uganda or here in the USA:

...and regardless, should we be thankful for occasionally *not* calling for mass murder? Golly what glorious christian love...
