I've done something terrible... I made quinoa

Mon Sep 17, 2018 1:20 am

Folks, I've done something terrible. I'm probably about to get banned from the site, fired from my job, thrown in prison, and live my life in darkness and self-torture.

But I might as well come clean and own up to what I've done.

I...made quinoa.

I will live with this shame for the rest of my life.

An undistinguished grain, at best.

Certainly not the correct grain

Breaking your paleo lifestyle, I see.

Don't worry. Not all is LOST.

For the longest time, I thought it was pronounced "kwee-NOH-uh". I had no idea what it is and still have no idea why people should be outraged over it.

I read the title and thought maybe you purposely misappropriated some Schedule I narcotics or something. Be easy Doc.

Doc, I don't think you will ever live down the shame of that moment of weakness, get some expensive therapy and pass the cost on to your patients. :spin:

Quinoa? :yuck:

Horrible texture and no taste. Why does anyone bother with it? It might be handy in the bottom of a bird cage.

I thought you had better taste, Doc?

Why the thread title change? Sucks the fun right out of it.

Kinda like quinoa does to people's lives.

I'm just here to say I don't mind quinoa.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the president of the fan club, but I'd eat it.

I don't even know what quinoa is. It must be an abomination from an other world.

You'll find no more accurate and unbiased description of quinoa than this one-

scbriml wrote:

Yep, no flavor of its own at all and a texture that's like millet (bird seed) except really slimy on the outside. Apparently the "Ancient Peoples of the Peruvian High Plateau" used to eat it and may still, probably because it's just about the only native grain that'll grow up there.

Well Doc, as long as it agreed with you, don’t sweat it! Count yourself LUCKY! ;-)
I tried it once, pre-rinsed and rinsed once more, to get any possible coating off it. Thought it would be a healthy food, and liked that it was a source of protein. Severe acid stripping food poisoning symptoms for 3 days straight as soon as it hit my stomach and guts. Extreme pain and gastro issues. My GP said it was a sensitivity or allergy, can’t remember which now, that some folks have to quinoa. Never again! So much for that health kick. And you know, they have quinoa added or snuck into a lot of foods now. I have to doublecheck breads and other items. I end up quizzing people at house parties as it is put into many dishes. But hey, if you can stomach it, have fun.
Did you like it? Will you eat it again, despite the obvious embarrassment and shame...? You know, when no one is looking?

I actually just tried quinoa today for the first time as well - never saw the attraction in it, and would never decide to just order it, but it was at the buffet at the place where I got my lunch so decided to try it out. Kind of wish I was still living in ignorance about it...

Also, any chance we can pass a constitutional amendment imposing mandatory jail time on whoever uses the word "superfood"?

Maaaaaaaaybe :sly:

It's actually not so bad. Kinda flavorless, as many grains are, but it went in a recipe I was making.

I want to hear more about your Paleo diet. I am experimenting with Keto for something similiar to a TBI and i eat tablespoons full of grass fed beef fat, it's hard to avoid carbs but the energy from fat is amazing once you become at least semi-fat adapted. I also have been doing intermittent fasting, I love it at first but I can't cram enough calories into a 6-8 hour window it seems. But I love the spike in HGH I totally feel it, my muscles get rock hard like I am 25 again. I want to try Paleo.

This is the only thing I use quinoa for. Cooked with broth in the rice cooker. Absolutely delicious.

One food that was meant to be a s****food kefir, tried it today. Tasted like milk mixed with sauerkraut water. :yuck: Surprisingly, I don't mind sauerkraut especially eaten with pork.

Quinoa is a good get at the salad bar.

It adds a bit of nutty flavor and a bit of crunchy texture to a salad.

If you're trying to use it as a side dish with a slab of meat as the main course, you're doing it wrong.

So practically like many kinds of meat before you season and cook them? Raw pork has about as much taste as an especially bland glas of water. Gilthead has no taste either....

We cook a lot of fish and quinoa is a pretty nice bed for it, can mix it in with rice, stir fry, vegetables etc... to add some different flavours.

Did you cook it with anything else? You're not really supposed to just eat it straight by itself... quinoa with sauteed veggies and some soy/hot sauce is pretty tasty.
