The good news topic

Wed Jul 18, 2018 10:52 am

If you follow the news as close as I, you might think the world is going to hell. But there are also beautiful human interest stories out there. So please share them here.

Man walks over a dozen miles to first day of work, CEO gifts him car as thanks

It was supposed to be Walter Carr's first day of work with a moving company Sunday when his car broke down. But, instead of calling out, he walked through the night to be on time.

Carr's vehicle stopped working the night before his first day with the moving company Bellhops, and he knew he couldn't miss it. So, he decided to walk. Carr began his hike from Homewood, Alabama, to the town of Pelham, Alabama, at midnight. He walked at least 14 miles before police picked him up at 4 a.m., reports CBS affiliate WIAT-TV.

One dedicated student, nice of the police to give him a ride and a good reaction from his boss.

I will take exception to “the world is going to hell”. The world is the world. It has its ups and downs, but it continues to truck along. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your world view, we are in a continuous news cycle where “news” is instantly transmitted around the world by professionals and amateurs, alike. With no, or little vetting, because they want to be first. Add the growth of narcissism, with easy access to billions of people, and it’s easy to come to the conclusion that we’re going to hell.

At least one good thing about social media, is that these kind of stories tend to get out, because they are the feel good stories. They are the human interest stories of the past, that got 30 seconds on the nightly news, between the sports and weather.

Well done to all involved.

Simply put, there has never been a better time to be living on this planet. The world is as great a place as it ever has been in the history of humanity. Just look at how much poverty has been reduced as one example.

Hey now, humanity is great ... in the short geological time we’ve been here we’ve invented iPhones.

After inventing a lot of other great sh*t, like potable water, highways, trains, planes, the 21st century will be marked by unheard of medical advancements (which is crazy to think about it considering the advancements in the 20th century) and other things we haven’t even thought of ... if we don’t all kill each other first. (Remind me why we would again?)

(Do not take any of the above as being in agreement with VT or any of his (or her) other screennames.)

You're right you're right.
But we've also invented
- pollution
- murders
- atom bombs
- pokemons
Still not invented
- a cure for cancer
- warp drive
- teleport
Hopefully we still have some time

Rookie Cop saves man from getting hit by a train in full gear sprint.
Not sure if the man was disabled or drugged, but the cop went on a welfare check, and then a train appeared.

See the video.

I guess I need to put a disclaimer when I'm making a joke.

Go do something you love pessimists. I'm going on a walk.

Um, I just got a scheduled pay increase for time in grade? Does that count? It might take payroll 9 months to actually apply it, but it's sort of good news. For me.

I'm pretty sure all the good world news is about scientific progress these days.

It is really good news, mostly because some company still has scheduled payroll increases! Good for you! :twocents: :twocents: :twocents:

Good News stories can make you feel good.

When I want to be uplifted I watch You Tube Videos to take a stroll down Memory Lane. Like this:

A train station in Sweden was flooded and people turned it into a swimming pool

Unfortunately the party ended pretty quickly, with the emergency services hastily pumping the water from the station and returning it to normal.

Responding to pictures on social media, some people questioned the safety of the operation, remarking that bathers could possibly be at risk or disease or of being electrocuted. But another described the bathers as “absolute legends".

We can’t imagine such anarchy occurring in sensible Britain, but after such dry weather, we’re certainly jealous of all the rain!

Brilliant and the photo's are priceless. https://www.indy100.com/article/sweden- ... ol-8471681

A heroic feat, unfortunately, did not make it to the end: Maarten van der Weijden is a Dutch long-distance swimmer whom survived cancer to go on to be an Olympic champion. That in itself is quite inspiring. He tried to swim the "Elfstedentocht" this weekend. The Elfstedentocht is a long distance speedskating in nature (does not happen alot in Holland). The distance is 200km along 11 towns with "city rights". He started on Friday early in the morning and unfortunately, he stopped today after completing 163km on medical advice. He still raised money for the children cancer foundation.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2018/08/v ... al-advice/

I would say, well done and if anyone could make it, he would be able to.
