Today I walked around Brownie Lake

Tue Jul 17, 2018 3:00 am

which doesn't make sense because A) Why the hell is it called "Brownie Lake," what the hell kind of name is that for a body of water; and 2 Why is it called anything "Lake" when it's about half the size of a pond?

A.net trivia: How many Twin Cities-area lakes and subpondsized lakeoids has your old pal stuey now circumambulated?

Doesn't matter, as they are all incorrect bodies of water to walk around.

Having visited the land of 10,000 lakes on many many occasion I can confirm that there are really a lot of lakes that should probably be classified as ponds. But we also have a habit of putting up a dam on a river and calling the resulting reservoir a "lake" when really it's just a flooded river (look at lake of the ozarks in Missouri, it is very obviously a river system - and I lived there).

If you want to discuss funny lake names, look up Lake Disappointment in Australia

I think they consider anything a lake that doesn't have some sort of large flow either in or out. Some of the "lakes" up in the boundary waters are comically small.

Today I drove yes DROVE around Lake Nokomis - or, as the ancient Greeks called it, Lake Nokomisopolis - on a reconnaissance mission.

It is a large lake, or - as the ancient Romans called it - [i]lakicus largeus[/ii], so I am glad I was able to reconnoiter before the now-big day when I walk all the way around the blamed thing.

I shall have to eat well, still pack snacks and agua, and wear shades and lots of sunscreen.

I say gather up serious provisions, your scepter and orb, then make a peregrination around the great holy waters of Lake Minnetonka and rule the universe one may.

I waked around Green Lake in Seattle a few weeks ago.

And it was brown...?!

Was it named after a dude named "Green?"

Lake Harriet in Minneapolis was named by a guy whose wife was named Harriet.

And apparently Brownie Lake was named after some other dude's daughter.

(I do not think Lake Michigan was named after a dude or dudette...)
