Tokyo Olympic will be a seasonal heat-humid hell.

Mon Jul 16, 2018 6:16 am

These days we are suffering from the heat and humidity as high as 38 centigrade temp and 80 percent humid. Can both participants and galleries endure this severe climate two years later at Tokyo Olympic?

Sure, because weather today will be the same on the same day every year. Yesterday was 85F at my place so I can therefore say that every 15 of July will be 85F at my area, right?

To be fair to the OP, Tokyo is very hot and humid in the summer.

To be fair to everyone else, this is not at all a new revelation.

Remember the conditions in Brazil for the olympics? Quite similar (in some locations).

Climates vary across the globe. If you're from the midwest in the united states you are quite familiar with 80% humidity and 35C+ temperatures in July and August. It is unusual if it is cooler and dryer. (Working outside yesterday you wouldn't have known if I had just gone swimming or was just sweating that much).

Toasty,
but I am seeing 33-35 degree heat over the 10 day forecast.

Atlanta . Ga had the same weather for it's olympics.

These are the Summer Olympics after all.

Averages for Tokyo, indicates this is a heat wave,

in two years, we will have to see what happens.

Ah well, I am sure that everyone will handle it. We have seen the summer Olympics in some hot places before Atlanta, Athens or Moscow for instance.

It will not be like the Qatar world cup condition in the summer, 50+ degrees Celsius.

It's not being played in the summer. The next World Cup will start on 21 Nov 2022 and end 18 Dec 2022. (The first one not to have been played in May,June or July).

True, but their bit was playing it in summertime and they got chosen anyway.

Despite it being their winter it was still quite warm and humid. I recall the ref's breaking for water in many of the soccer matches.

President of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee Yoshiro Mori met Friday with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss the possibility of introducing daylight saving time during the 2020 Games as a countermeasure for extreme summer temperatures.

The discussion followed a decision by the International Olympic Committee to allow the marathon to be staged at 7 a.m. to lessen the likelihood of runners competing during Tokyo’s sweltering summer, which has already surpassed 40 degrees this year.

Just imagine having the Summer Olympics or a marathon in Singapore...

What about it? Have the strenuous activities (basketball, tennis, etc.) in closed, AC stadiums. And hold other events either in the early morning hours or after sunset. Of course, whether Singapore (or any other tropical country) has the means to build one-time use facilities in valuable land is a different story. And this is not just isolated to Singapore. The advantage many tropical countries have is the frequent rains in the afternoon that helps cool down the environment. Of course, they also run the risk of facing hurricanes.

Build it like Vancouver, which design and built all of the facilities used for its Olympics with a post-Olympics use in mind, or simply renovated existing facilities. Effectively, the Olympics in Vancouver was used as an excuse for the entire region to either build/replace/renovate most of community centres.

If you can have the World Cup in Qatar at the hottest point of the year then I don't see why Tokyo shouldn't host the olympics.

Sevenair, you do know that the next world cup will be held in December? (Not that it makes that awful decision much better...)

Don`t forget closed and air conditioned stadiums with a lovely 22c temperature. :)

Japan is now proposing a 1-2 hours DST for the year of Olympics in order to let events like Marathon start earlier when the temperature is to be lower.

It won’t be an issue. When I was a fit healthy young buck I played football, gear and all, on 100 degree days with no problems whatsoever. Rode the bike for miles on end on similar days with very high humidity. These folks are basically wearing dolphin shorts. The only people I can see having true hydration issues would be marathon runners and distance cycling, but even that can be managed.
