A snail has an important role in nature, therefore it can never be Gross.

I'd have used a semicolon where you used that comma.

That is you....

Not to be pedantic, but I had quite enjoyed having a thread sans politics for a short while.

Not to be pedantic but I just read an article that said:

The continuous lava flow has now covered about 12.5 square miles of Hawaii's Big Island, or about half the size of Manhattan

The portion of the quote in bold is meaningless to the majority of readers. All it tells me is the writer likely resides in the state of New York.

I have never understood these comparisons. I was east of the Mississippi once when I was six months old, so when a fire here in the West takes out "an area the size of Rhode Island," I have no clue what that is like. Or the YouTube video I saw the other day about the Vatican railroad compared the size of Vatican City to the height of Burj Khalifa. Meaningless to me.

"That" is a pronoun. In this case, referring to my sentence fragment.

That excuse for a sentence is missing a subject.

That excuse for a sentence is missing a subject.

He should have diagrammed it first.

That would have been the pedantic thing to do.

The subject is implied. The subject of that sentence you quote is referring back to the sentence before it.

Honestly, I would love to learn to diagram sentences again. I had one teacher in middle school spend three weeks teaching us about diagramming sentences. That is my whole experience learning how to diagram sentences. I would also like to learn shorthand. It is my opinion that shorthand is the Latin of the written word.

Do you want to learn Gregg shorthand, or Pitman?

If those are the choices, I'd choose Teeline shorthand. Purely to be pedantic and point out there are more choices than those two.

I would pedantically point out that Teeline is used mainly within the Commonwealth whereas seb146 resides in the States.

Gregg is the only shorthand style I have ever known. Now, I am interested that there are others. It does make me wonder what shorthand looks like in China or Egypt or Russia? Languages that do not use the Latin based alphabet, do they use shorthand at all?

My apologies for hijacking the thread, but my world has been rocked and I need answers!!
