Clothing brands popular with gay men?

Thu Jul 05, 2018 5:26 pm

I was wondering, what clothing brands are popular with gay men? I have a family member who is gay (no, he isn't my boyfriend), and I was thinking what clothing brands would be popular among the gay crowd.

I am guessing perhaps Calvin Klein is one brand popular among the gay crowd, while I know the modern IZOD is generally less popular with gays.

I look at a shirt, sweater, or pants and think "would I wear this regularly" and if I answer yes, I buy it. I think the only real gay preference is Andrew Christian underwear. I can not afford them, so I don't know what the big deal is. I prefer 2XIST anyway.

EDIT:

I have not seen you around for a while. Welcome back!

then just yesterday i saw him on the street, wearing a Hollister shirt.

IZOD of the 80s when they were together with Lacoste was somewhat popular with gays, but gay men generally steer clear of the modern IZOD, preferring brands with a slimmer fit.

You always seem to know what gay men like and don't like...but no, you're NOT gay.

AC underwear is overrated, especially since the guy can't actually make a discreet variation. Notice how the labels are "Trophy Boy", "Fukr", "Happy", etc. His Vibe and Black collections were the only ones worth buying and he's kinda pulled back on those.

There was a guy who on his Grindr profile said that if you had American Eagle underwear or other store brands, you weren't compatible with him. But remember, we're an all inclusive family and we want others to feel welcomed...but guuurl, you best be wearing Express fashion or else.

Isn't the whole point of Grindr to meet someone that you can immediately get out of their shirt?

Again, someone who seems to be missing the point of Grindr.

My only criteria for underwear on others and in particular myself is that they be made of natural materials, preferably cotton, because underwear composed of man-made fibers, especially nylon, will give a man a case of stinky dinky that will make his partner's eyes water.

Have you taken a moment to consider that all gay men don't dress alike? We wear... whatever we want.

So maybe just buy him something that looks nice and is in the realm of what he wears currently.

I mean.. Jesus. What a thread. Imagine: "My friend is african-american. What clothes do african-american people wear?". It's an insane question to ask.

I see your point, but consider this:

Not all clothes are built the same. American Eagle jeans size 28 are bigger than Old Navy jeans size 28. Slim, relaxed or whatever. Just like with shoes. I need 11.5 in Adidas and Reebok, 12 in NIke and Chucks, and 13 in Pumas.

Wear what makes you feel good.

A couple of months ago, I found a red shirt with black sparkles on the collar. I want to say it was Kenneth Cole Reaction, but probably not. Anyway, I love it. I love how I feel in it. It is a little flashy for around here and everyday wear, but who cares? I feel great when I wear it. That is what matters.

Even if you feel hot wearing BVDs and New Balance, you do you. No one else will..... :)

See, that was my first reaction when I read the title and the first post. I know a couple of gay men, and their dress is indistinguishable from any other man I know. In other words, varied according to the person.

1337Delta764... do you think maybe you'd be better suited to a fashion/clothing/shopping forum?

I've only ever seen threads from you regarding clothing and shopping (and of course the colour pink). Apart from your username I don't think I've seen anything aviation related.

Gay men dress well, I can't see anyone with a gram of fashion sense adorning anything IZOD. Maybe they were fashionable in the 80's. But not only is IZOD vomit in the form of clothing it's also priced like it's not vomit.

And if anyone thinks I'm exaggerating...

To be honest no self respecting heterosexual man would wear this. The waistbelt alone looks like you want to star in a 1980ies porno movie and the colours can only work for the colour blind.

My family member that I want to buy clothes for is a slim guy. I am thinking that brands that have slimmer cuts would be more appropriate.

The problem with Visa gift cards is that they charge an extra fee to purchase on top of what the gift card is worth. Probably the most versatile gift card that doesn't charge an extra fee would be Amazon.

Then get him an Amazon gift card. Don't waste your time trying to figure out what kind of clothes he might like based on the opinions of a few random gay guys in the internet.

For "slimmer" cuts, I would try Express or American Eagle. Express used to have a good selection of sizes, but, now, it seems they cater more toward smaller men. AE has always been catering to smaller men, IMO.

Gay men, like literally everyone else, come in all different shapes and sizes. That is one reason we put ourselves in various categories. Twink, otter, bear, polar bear, cub, etc. It can be easily translated to hetero men. Look at his skin tone/hair color combination, too. Kevin Hart and Ed Sheeran would not be able to look good in or fit into the same thing. Are either of them gay? Who cares? They are built different.

LOL That could be standard beachwear at Mar-A-Lago. My friend in SAN is not an avid sailor. He just happens to know a lot of people who own boats. That is what he sometimes wears. If he is comfortable, good for him.

Calvin Klein underwear is popular with the gays. Calvin Klein apparel is not. And don’t go and buy him underwear because that’s personal and a little creepy.

If you want to make a nice impression, then buy him a nice bottle of champagne. Veuve Cliquot is a little too overdone in my opinion, so instead, impress him with two thoughtful bottles of Ruinart Rosé. Two bottles would make a lasting first impression. One bottle he can enjoy at his leisure and a second bottle for an occasion.

Another great resource for excellent gift giving is the apothecary department at Barneys New York. I don’t know where you live, but check it out if you live close to a BNY. Gays will LOVE you and will be your eternal wing man upon receipt of a home gift from this shop.

Good luck with your shopping and let us know your result!

Gosh...gay men wear anything under the sun. I will say this, as a gay man, IZOD is NOT trending, and neither is Calvin Klein. It's not like we all go shopping together and like the same things. I've seen gays have terrible fashion sense, and those who have incredible fashion sense. (Basically like anyone else).

Personally, I like Zara for casual wear, and H&M. It's inexpensive and moderately fashionable. But honestly, I feel somewhat guilty for even contributing to this, as if I am just adding to the misconception that "all gays like the same brands of clothing."

I have been to Barneys NY in Seattle and San Francisco and I find them overpriced, fussy, and pretentious. Ditto for Nieman Marcus. I can get the same thing at Macy's and pay less. You do have a good idea of buying someone home decor or something similar.

Also, listen to what he has been talking about. I had a set of martini glasses I bought at Crate & Barrel several years ago. Each glass comes in two pieces. The bottom is a bowl to be filled with ice to keep your drink chilled, which is in the standard martini glass cone. The glass was weak and two of them broke. I still have two and I am very protective of them. If someone were getting me a classy gift, that is what I would want. But, translate that to your friend.

Hey guys,
IZOD is unknown here in Australia...
And as for undies, Aussiebums would arguably rule the roost for gay men.
Otherwise, I really don't think that any particular clothing brand would be 'typical' for a gay Aussie.
Like others up thread have said, gay Aussies come in every shape, size, attitude... And some extremely different fashion sensitivities and choices!
Cheers

We are just like anyone else. I wouldn't say anything is any more or less popular. Perhaps opening - slogans that make any reference to sexuality are a big no no. Nonsense like 'I'm not queer, I'm a special edition' or 'gay uncle' particularly make me vomit internally every time I see them. The same goes for anything that's attention seeking, such as the wearing or, or the obsession with hot pink IZOD (who?) tshirts.

Personally items of clothing are a personal. Underwear is the same if a little creepy. Gays love candles though. We can't get enough of them and if we don't like the smell, we can simply get rid soon enough without causing too much offence.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say... IZOD.

Some seem to wear nothing else.

IZOD of the 80s when they were together with Lacoste was somewhat popular with gays, but gay men generally steer clear of the modern IZOD, preferring brands with a slimmer fit.

What do husky gays like you wear? Not all gays are skinny or fit, as you well know.

I'm not gay and I can swear that on the Bible a googolplex times even in my afterlife. I wear IZOD, which the modern version is a straight brand.

As for my gay family member, it isn't Christmas yet, so I will wait to make a decision.
