Very valid points about Messi and you have to attribute much of his success and greatness to what is arguably an 8-10 year stretch of the greatest midfield in history at Barcelona. Xavi and Iniesta controlling the midfield up and feeding Messi chance after chance (with defenders still needing to worry about the likes of Jaws, Neymar and Mbappe etc.) And genius talent like Busquets controlling the back end of midfield. Messi without any of that all of a sudden looks quite mediocre and unsure about his position or purpose.

I still think he's a candidate for GOAT up to this point in the game but events like these create justifiable doubt. Cristiano, much as I don't like his prima donna personality or habit of diving does have a vicious desire to win every single game and he wears it on his face for all 90 minutes. Messi so often just doesn't show up when you need him most. Today was another example.

I think you can already call Ronaldo the big winner of the World Cup. From all the big stars he shows the best performance and the most commitment. Imho he has cemented his position as the greatest of this generation now, way ahead of Messi or Neymar.

He's scored a PK, a FK, a header totally clear of defenders and a GK fluke. Which is what a striker should do, but greatest of his generation?

Morocco played much better, but they just woudn't score.

Brazil win, but it was a real struggle and Costa Rica had some decent chances. I've not been overly impressed by Brazil.

Neymar really is a bit of a petulant crybaby, isn't he? Brazil not convincing but job done. Fantastic win for Nigeria which sets up a great showdown against Argentina, Iceland far from out of it.

OK, that's as good as "Mexico built a wall and Germany paid for it". Well done sir, well done. He's likely also thinking that he never would've survived in the VAR era.

Having not played well, England dispatched Panama out of the competition with a 6-1 thrashing. Finally we had a referee who decided that the WWE style defending is not in the laws of football (though he still didn't give enough penalties). Kane is now leading the way for the Golden Boot.

I remember that since I was there. But that*s not really the fault of the organizers. Also, I do have the impression that these things are used now at every big event, including this world cup. Or am I wrong?

Also IMHO, never a pen for Iran. Hopefully that ref won't get another game at the WC.

The VAR ref, that is. The PK that Ronaldo went on to miss was similarly soft, though, also awarded by the VAR refs.

That Quaresma goal was an absolute screamer, though.

Bright marker values of all your statements Dutchy. I brought a link to an instagram account of a Brazilian who became a local meme in Russia at the football championship. Before then, someone said that such a Brazilian could not be. Here is a link to instagram of a real person, that Brazilian. What does Dutchy do? As expected, France and Denmark played a completely unremarkable 90 minutes. Looking forward to Argentina match. Either we'll see brilliance from Messi or comedy from Maradona as Argentina goes down, so no matter what us fans are the winner.

Turns out we saw brilliance from Messi AND comedy from Maradona. Win win! Argentine very jammy but they scraped the win they needed, Iceland came quite close to a result against Croatia, but lost it at the end.

We have 4 confirmed knockout ties so far:

Spain vs Russia
Uruguay vs Portugal
France vs Argentina
Croatia vs Denmark

France vs Argentina at a World Cup is a rare occurrence, this is only the 3rd one. 2 teams with brilliant individual talent but are a complete mess tactically. It's going to be chaos.

Entertaining match with some brilliant plays, some boneheaded ones (what was Mascherano thinking?), and Maradona celebrating with the middle finger! What more could we ask for? :highfive:

I dunno. France pulled off the tactic of 'do nothing for 90 minutes' very well today. They may be more tactically sound than we suspect.

I’m hoping Argentina stays around for a while. The skill level is super high and when they are playing well they are a pleasure to watch, and Maradona is like that car wreck you can’t look away from.

The coach said: "only five games to win to be Wolrd Champion"

they already won one.....

After the first round the tournament is a knock out style, so even bad teams have a chance to progress on a good day.

I'm simply speechless. And not just about Germany. Today says a lot about Mexico too, they knew all Germany needed was a draw and they were in danger of exiting unless they beat Sweden (I think I have that right), and they let themselves get smoked. I thought they were playing at a better level this tournament but the crucial matches are a toss up every time. The nerves in both matches looked frayed to the breaking point.

Anyway, the World Champs out in R1 and Korea takes a special victory home to their own crazed fans. My wife and son are going ballistic.
