15 years ago. I've practically met everyone who's 'friends' with me here - many are now close friends for over a decade. Dated a couple, ended up marrying one. I owe this website a lot.
Haven't been here for a while, this is probably my first post in a few years. Good to see some of the folks from back when I joined are still active. Would love to get to know others.

cheers,

In the 90s I was blessed to have access to the internet. I was a contractor at the late lamented DEC ((Digital Equipment Corporation, d | i | g | i | t | a | l, etc). We had state of the art computers on our desks and a T1 ( 1Mbit / sec or so ) blazing fast connection to the internet. One of my friends who was always at the bleeding edge of things showed me this new program called Mosaic. And the rest was history.

I was a Usenet news nerd back then so read m.t.a-i for a long time before I knew about airliners.net, but I do recall being a lurker by the time of the unfortunate 9/11/2001 incidents. Finally joined in 2005.

Some stuff from archive.org:

Dec 1997: a.net has 1300 pictures online! https://web.archive.org/web/19971222032 ... iners.net/

Dec 1998: 15,000 photos, links to forums https://web.archive.org/web/19981212012 ... iners.net/

Jan 2001: Forums with 6,000 registered users: https://web.archive.org/web/20010124060 ... scussions/

Funny story. Not funny so much as part of my history with this site:

I got my first email address, which I still use to this day for EVERYTHING, in 1997. When I moved to Seattle (Auburn-next to ATC Seattle Center) in 1999, I was able to get my first computer. Using dial up and search engines, I found some great pictures here. I tried submitting some but they were rejected for poor quality. And they were. Scans of photographs. Anyway, because I had to have a username and password to upload pics, I chose my actual name. I didn't get it back then. That username was locked because I could not remember the password at the time, so I chose this one.

Side note, I remember my friends in Auburn all coming up with crazy email addresses. We all had like 10 or 20 like really NSFW ones. I went with this username instead.

Lurking since around 2000. Registered in 2004-2005. Sort of crazy to think about all of the changes. Graduated college, flight instructed, got married, flew for a regional, now flying at one of the big 3. Four moves of 500+ miles along the way.

I feel old

Didn't want to start a new thread, but on the topic of long time spent here, I am going to detox from a.net for a while. Already cut some other social media out of my life in favor of new things. This is not because of anything wrong here - a.net, and all of you, have provided a patient, friendly, informative, kind place to chat bout airliners and shoot the breeze for many years now. I really thank you all. I will be lurking without a doubt. It is just time to turn the page. If (when) I come back, in a few weeks or months, it will be under a new username. I just need to rebuild the way I spend time in this world. Cheers. and THANK YOU. Flighty

Joined in July 2003. Lurked for maybe a few months prior. Was here primarily for the photos at first (that's how I found A.net); didn't start really participating in the forums for another year or two, I think. Finally started uploading photos in ~2010, went strong for a few years, don't really upload much anymore, or participate as much in the forums. Was also a screener for a few months at one point....that didn't last long. Still visit the site daily, though.

Created my first account in 1998, then lost it when the site went paid. So just lurked. Decided to buy-in in 2009 when the CSeries program was finally underway with the CS100 and CS300 designations. Following all things CSeries from 2009 until first delivery to Swiss was my happiest time on a.net. Most of my posts are related to CSeries. Sad day when they gave it away to Airbus. If only they had held on for a few more months. I think it would've turned a corner. But I digress ...

Back in 1998, I've found a Geocities aviation site that also gathered short cuts to several other addresses. This is where I discovered Aeromoe and probably A.net. I've been a lurker for several years mainly the photos then decided sometimes in the early 2000s, to join in before closing my profile in 2007 I believe. Then, at the end of 2012 I decided I would try it again. Now I'm less active than the previous time.

Yeah he's doing well - caught up with him for dinner in BKK a year or so back.

For all it's ills, FaceBook is good for keeping in touch with friends made here who no longer frequent the site.

OHHHH! I knew someone would go there eventually. :)

I lurked for a few years before finally joining on November 14, 2001. Miss some of the great ones around here like Superfly, ANCFlyer, and so on. KROC and I are friends on social media, compare notes about raising kids, but have yet to meet. Funny how a shared hobby can lead to long-term friendships.

well, as much as the last rendition of Superfly, pissed me off as he wished for the condition (Trump) the nation is in now...it's still good to hear he's doing okay overall.

And good to see the familiar name that is you-

I joined 14 years ago but was browsing the site since 1998 (I was 18 back then). My user name has not changed and I have been pretty much missing from the site since the Demand Media takeover times. I do wonder about some users: Superfly, Phillys from Canada, Diamond, Fred the gay guy, Klaus the mac guy, Hannah the British girl, AA777FirstClass (Evan), Mel from India, Sammy Hostie, LambertSTL, Hoons90. These were users that in one way of another gave me a different perspective of things compared to what I was having at home. Anyone knows anything?
