Post your favorite buildings from your hometown.

Utrecht, Th Netherlands:

In the center of Utrecht, architects Sluijmer and van Leeuwen designed a striking structure of seven-storey glass and steel on a plot of three by five meters, which is habitable as a house. In this house, space has been invented in an inventive way. The steel main support construction marks the traffic space, which also forms the core of the house conceptually. The residential functions and furniture (which are integrally designed) are 'hung' directly on this construction. The house disappears into the ground where one arrives at a crossing of two fourteenth-century cellars. The special thing about this house is its extraversion. This house opens up to the city. Whoever studies here looks through the curved glass wall to the Dom, who sleeps here looks out over the canal or sees the stars. The kitchen on the sixth floor offers a view of the city. Greatness has been created on the smallest conceivable surface.

There really are no favorite buildings here. Southwest Oregon Community College campus is nice, but nothing outstanding. I find it odd that the library is a five story building with only two stories with windows. I don't know what that is about. I am not a student or employee, so I am not about to go nosing around. The McCullough Bridge was an engineering marvel when it was built. Southwest Oregon Regional Airport terminal is interesting. That with the view of the McCullough Bridge makes for a beautiful postcard!

We lived in STS (Santa Rosa CA) for six years. AT&T had a building there with a wind sculpture on the side. Thousands of aluminum discs that would sway in the wind and create patterns. It was so beautiful.

Hometown?

Well, I was born in Athens, so...there's that. Plenty of favorites, but I must say the Acropolis Museum is amazing.

Grew up in New York, so...there's that also. I'm partial to the Verrazano Bridge...so elegant and graceful. Contrasting with The Brooklyn Bridge, a brute tour-de-force. I love walking across that bridge. Wish I could walk across the Verrazano. What a view that would be.

Have lived in Louisville for 28 years. Not really sure I have a favorite bit of architecture here. I do enjoy walking around Old Louisville or The Highlands. Beautiful old homes. Too many of them had been sub-divided into apartments, but people have been buying them up and restoring them. Wish I had the money, time and patience to do that.

I really need to think about what bit of local architecture I would consider my favorite.

Oh, and getting sorta old and slightly technologically stubborn, I haven't bothered to figure out how to link outside pictures to this website...or any other for that matter.

The problem with the Milwaukee City Hall is that it is in the Flemish Renaissance Revival Style, and that's just gross. But, Laverne & Shirley helped redeem it.

I live in Den Bosch (aka 's-Hertogenbosch). The city is full of protected monuments, but by far the best one is of course the Sint Jan cathedral.

From Warsaw, not my home town but current place of residence, The Palace of Culture and Science, Stalin's gift to Poland completed in 1955, it marks the very center of Warsaw.

The City Hall (yellow building) with the main square

The largest of the two central churches looks quite majestic.

The church is also very nice looking but also much older (11th and 14th century).

There are much more flattering angles to photograph it from, but yes that is the building.

Pretty sure the Europeans will beat us Americans hands down, but here's more pictures of my home city, because it's still pretty for a city in the US.

Also much more pedestrian friendly than cities outside of the Northeastern US.

Looks like a nice town. A pedestrian/bike friendly city will help society for a number of reasons. :bigthumbsup:

Quite easy for me to beat that one. Paris is a beautiful city. The Eiffel tower is indeed impressive, but there are more impressive buildings in Paris I think, you underestimate your own hometown.

I'd say it depends on from what perspective one looks, engineering, aesthetics, uniqueness and etc.
I find the Eiffel tower to be very unique and also a marvellous engineering work but perhaps not that good looking.

I, for one, like to wonder through the city streets of Paris. Brilliant, more the atmosphere and the collection of buildings then just a single one. But agree, everyone his own.

Le Negresco, Nice. It's just perfect. Unfortunately a little difficult to photograph "cleanly" due to various street lights, palm trees and traffic lights in the way.

Hotel Suisse also looks beautiful.

Very interesting project, on so many levels. Antoni Gaudí started the project in 1882 (!). Amazingly, many generations of construction workers worked on this without ever seeing it finished. Just like the great European Cathedrals which cost many of decennia to be built. It should be finished in 2050. An interesting fact is that there were never any real drawings,

Before being finished it is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Architecture wise, Barcelona is a very interesting city. I love to be there. It is the hometown of Antoni Gaudí, an absolute brilliant but crazy architect.

Hey guys,
My hometown, Sydney, not only has the world's most beautiful harbour but two iconic pieces of architecture and engineering that make the trio one of the most famous 'sights' on the planet.... : Sydney Harbour, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. All three compliment and work so well together. The sum of the whole in this case is definitely greater than the sum of its parts!
Come and visit some day! I'll give you a personal tour myself! Us Aussies are very friendly!

My home town has no world class architecture to boast about, but the theater (built in the 1950s)

and the public library (1990s)

were quite outstanding for their era. The true treasure of the city, however, is its "living room" - the Prinzipalmarkt:

I have just arrived home from our Vivid Festival... Lights, music, ideas.... Featuring the Harbour Bridge and Opera House lit up in fantastic ways, colours and patterns! Huge crowds even on a wet and cold Saturday night!
Totally loved it and the architecture of the icons really stood out in his unique Sydney festival!
What a festival! Well done to all involved!

since you said hometown.

this is my hometown as well as my first place of employment.
i would spend ,my summers working at the airport and telling pilots what
direction the wind was blowing. that was a long time ago 1978

the airport hasn't changed that much since that time either.

i love pilots that were there, they would take me up in the air, all the time.
and, i had a couple try to teach me how to fly. my co-worker used to fuel
the planes, and now he's a WN pilot, i became a flight attendant for eastern airlines until they went under
and then worked for Co and DL at gate and ops. good times, good memories

funny how a summer job, started my career in the industry.

Plenty of interesting architecture in my current place of residence (Berlin), but Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie is my favourite - indeed, one of my all-time favourites:

I am also rather fond of the Ullsteinhaus, which I think suits Berlin very well and should be used more often as inspiration for new buildings rather than the ten-a-penny concrete and glass boxes that are popping up everywhere.

The 1932 Shell House is another notable example of modernist architecture:

As for my hometown, it's difficult to pick a favourite...

... but the Ca' d'Oro is certainly one of the most beautiful buildings on the Canal Grande and holds a special place in my heart, as I grew up living right next door:

It is an example of a time period. I like some diversity.

Most people in my town dislike the "Neudeflat", but I like its period architecture.

So, the thing about Boston city hall is that right now it's not at all like how the architect intended for it to interact with humans. The base was meant to be porous, allowing people to pass through freely. In a post 9/11 US, that's just not happening at a city hall. The plaza around it is infamous for being a vast windswept brick desert with no real signs of life. The fountains and Ziggurat style subway head house are gone. It's time to take a picture of it and build something different in its place.

Also, Boston's Brutalist architecture was also a by-product of entire neighborhoods being deemed "blighted" and bulldozed over during the urban renewal era. It was not a good thing.

When you ask people what building style they find most beautiful, most of the time they point to something that has been built hundreds of years ago.
Is that a sign that architecture has gone down hill every since (with some exceptions)? Why this sad state of contemporary architecture?

A lot of the modern glass/steel/concrete buildings being built today won't be around 200 years from now. But the buildings that are kept will probably be the benchmark for desirable buildings 200 years from now. Same with the old buildings being today's benchmark. The crap buildings where torn down long ago. The average dwelling from 200+ years ago would not be deemed acceptable as a garden shed.

There are thousands of them in Sweden, small cottages (torp) built 100-30 years ago.

It's called "value engineering". You can get more of a profit out of precast materials than using, let's say in Boston's case, traditional masonry involving water shocked bricks. Cheap precast materials weren't actually an option back in the day.
