Let's make NonAv fun again!

Fri May 11, 2018 8:34 pm

Right now there are 18, yes 18 threads about Trump on the first page of the non aviation forum. Seriously? I'm sick and tired of seeing his face in the news all the time, Facebook is full of him, and Airliners.net is even worse.

Do you remember when NonAv was about word games, post-a-pic threads, self-pic threads, "what are you listening to", organizing real-life meetings, we had recurring threads about 70s cars/pornography, "self gloss 1,000 / 10,000... posts", "rub those breast (sic) with olive oil", hell how long haven't I seen the empty cargo bay picture (do the kids even know that any more?), or the give-a-fuckometer. There was a guy who took a Hooters employee for the first flight of her life on an AA 777, another dude who used a flight tracker to stalk a cheerleader, some people who cried about a Scotland flag until they got it, there was a "superthread" that tested how long a thread could be, and a thread for people whose computer got screwed up because of the "superthread", a GulfStreamGirl who used "....." between every word and LOLd all the time (remember the "attention whore" meme?), the "delete this thread", the super cool people who knew how to hack the "message too short" mechanism, and every now and then, we would discuss why Microsoft is a cool company or why we'd never buy a Nissan.

And most importantly, there were no EIGHTEEN FREAKING THREADS about the president of ONE country (remember when A.net was Swedish and not so damn USA centered). And it was fun, lots of fun, and I spent hours and hours on Airliners.net and had a great time and many friends that I would visit offline as well, and it was great. And before someone tells me I'm free to start 18 threads about my own country's president, screw that, I don't even want one!

Let's take back our NonAv! Let's start some threads, and LOTS OF THEM, about fun topics, like it used to be, with lots of pictures and memes, without all the seriousness and trolling and hate. In fact, I challenge everybody who agrees with me to go right back to NonAv and start one new thread, until all the Trumps slip down the end of the page and into oblivion.

And for all those who actually want that kind of discussion, why don't you take it to Facebook (Hatebook) because:

OK, I'm with you and I will start a topic that has nothing to do with politics. But it'll be a long one and I will have to do it after I am off work. Tonight or tomorrow for sure.

Start all the threads you want to, and so will I and others who also use the freedom to do so. Nobody has ever said otherwise. Say something interesting, you will get a response I am sure. It seems now we are in a Era of lies, greed, and corruption and an effort to suppress free speech and free press. I think that is important myself.

In most other forums I frequent, there is one catch all thread concerning President Donald J. Trump. Any and all "Trump" discussions are held there. But here at A.Net, everyone wants the recognition of starting their "own" DJT thread(s). They want their "rage" front and center. It's really *not* about Trump....

It's about their *rage* about Trump, that they want to put on exhibition...

I will take full credit for this newfound hope that Non-AV becomes less political.

Look what can happen a little conservative thought and viewpoints sympathetic to right wing beliefs come to the surface at this site.

The overwhelmingly liberal members suddenly want to change the subject.

What an excellent week it has been!
I haven’t been this excited for the USA since 1983 and everyone knew Reagan would crush it. That’s how long it’s been.

I remember when half the cars in the "Post A Pic of Your Ride" threads were all GTIs. Wonder if thats still the case? :scratchchin:

I agree though, the Non-Av forums used to be so much fun - need to bring back that positive entertainment.

We could always do one of the old " would you hit it" threads 1 for the str8 and one for the gay people on here. But alas I think the mods would shut them down due to the lefty softy's that would complain about them.

Apparently some people feel very virtuos when they can say something negative about Trump.
Also the constant labelling from certain people in here is really distasteful, but unfortunately very typical way of debate for "progressives" nowadays.

I don't understand why it is acceptable to label people you disagree with politically as "Nazis" "Racist" or "Supremacist".
This is offcourse an effective way to try to shut people up you don't agree with, but that way of debate only signals intolerance towards diversity of opinions.
To me it is no different than calling people rapists, peodophiles or whatever, and it certainly destroyes the tone in any interesting political discussion.

Trump is the President.
Get over it and accept it like an adult and comfort yourself with the fact, that Trump is probably the most liberal Republican president in a long time.

If they label them because they disagree, yeah, you are right. If they happen to be Nazis (few), Racists or Supremacists (plenty) it is totally ok to call them out. Now then there is the question of definition, some people count you as a supremacists and Nazi ist you just support them, other may draw the line at actually gassing someone. There is quite the range.

same as above.

peodophiles

that is a medical condition and using that as a swearword is basically just like wearing a t-shirt saying "I don´t understand the words i am using".

Trump is the President.

So was Obama, no one cared. No one even cared having a fact based discussion, yet you are only whining. And his biggest scandal was what? Ordering Dijon mustard with his burger of the tan suit?

In a party that has driffted so far to the right that the overlap with Nazis, Racists and Supremacists on its right is hard to miss for a blind man, that is hardly a conciliation.

Non.AV won´t be fun before the Trump/Pence nightmare is over, if we all life that long, Trump seems to be hellbent to increase to proliferation of nuklear weapons after all.

There is no doubt that non-av has changed and may be less 'fun' in it's topics and posts than in the past. As you can tell, I have been a member for many years and have made many posts so can note this change. What hasn't changed is the 95% dominance of males who post on this site. I suspect, like with a plane crash, there a number of factors.
Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and others have shifted the attention and time of many past posters to them rather than do so here.

Too many, including a few moderators, who were chased out due to personal attacks.

As a site with international reach, its owners don't want hassles some subjects bring that could limit the site being accessible in certain countries or were potentially offensive to certain cultures . Some areas of discussion became overheated with bad postings so moderators chose to limit or pretty much shut down. This is particularly true with any as to Israel and its policies, migration/immigration in Europe and the USA.

The need to be a welcoming site as to women, GLTBQ's, religious groups, of different political sides. Some post subjects as some noted in the previous posts on this thread really can't be done anymore as are insensitive and potentially offensive.

As to too many threads and comments as to President Trump, that is due to the numerous issues many (like me) have of him, the almost daily 'new' issues about him, his controversial personality and that many take sides with him or against him with great emotional vigor.

Huh? :?

Who uses paedophile as a swear word?

Your pompousness disappearing from non-aviation threads would go a long way toward making non-aviation threads great again.

I agree. I think it’s important to not romanticize the past because it’s typically a past that never existed. Though I think it’s important to realize when times change for better or worse.

So Trump is not perfect, and have made bad impulsive decisions in his life, so what.
He's human, and not a politically correct career politician.
The constant need to redicule is like a childish obsession.

I'd say gay users on this site are way more represented than in the general public.

You cannot be religious on the internet due to the edgy Atheists who will denigrate and shame you for being so.

Same with any hint of conservatism or moderate political opinions. Not even supporting Trump but generally centrist or slightly conservative views you're just not welcome. This is in part due to the European component of the user base. A centrist in the USA is considered a far right hardliner to many there. There are some far left users who face similar backlash from conservative users but it is more isolated.

This is an aviation hobby and advertising website in the end. Half the users here are completely socially inept. Just read some threads in civil av about emergency or unusual operations...many users have no concept of nuance or what actual human beings think and feel.

And in the end its all anonymous and that's going to make people more bombastic in general. Conversations online have never been nice and friendly. On open forums with lackadaisical moderation its going to be pretty awful.

They were fun for a while, then the game seemed to be "find a photo of the hottest woman you've ever seen" and post it. So that the answer to w.y.h.i. was aways going to be yes.
They stopped being about moderately attractive women that us shallow and superficial males could debate over.

Birdwatching I couldn’t agree more! Used to spend so much time here, especially in the 2006-2008 timeframe but have always checked in. Lately a small handful of people on both sides of the political aisle have made this completely insufferable. What’s interesting to me is that it’s a mix of relative newbies as well as some people who have been here for a long time but have become way more active than their historic levels. Either way it’s a small group making it a fairly miserable place. Because of it I’m rarely in this forum anymore but am happy to follow your lead and participate in the lighthearted stuff.

This thread is bringing some folks out of the woodwork. I remember spending hours and hours on this site after school in the mid 2000s, when $25 was a princely sum for me and I couldn't join. We used to have a lot more pilots and industry vets here. I don't know if screen names can be mentioned, but B747skipper's posts were great and are still worth reading.

There's a lot more satire and edginess on the internet, especially thanks to sites like Reddit. Lots more content with a "you're an idiot, and here's why" mentality, and maybe it's seeped into general internet language. More and more sites have a comments section, and aggregator services took a bite out of some smaller forums where people end up talking to the same set of people more often. This Reddit/YouTube comment section style of communicating is what's new, not the topics that are discussed.

Let's talk about snowglobes or when Northwest will retire the DC-9. Let's make a.net great again!
