F1 2018: Bahrain, China, Azerbaijan

Tue Apr 17, 2018 3:00 am

What an amazing couple of races we've had at Bahrain and China! Lots of drama and some unexpected results - fantastic for the sport. Best of all, noone seems to notice the Halos anymore!

The Halos are noticable every single time the shot cuts to the in car camera! Not that nice...

Need more of the Shanghai action at Baku. That was some of the more exciting racing I've seen in quite a while.

Enjoyed the Chinese GP. I had recorded it and was watching about one hour behind 'live'. Had got to about 1/3 way through and was about to stop watching when I accidentally saw the result alert on my phone. Most entertaining.

Another strategy cock-up by Mercedes probably cost Hamilton 2nd place. Should have pitted as soon as the SC was notified, Hamilton would have seen Verstappen pull into the pits in front of him.

Great call by Red Bull to double-pit their cars twice in one race! A calmer Verstappen would probably have won the race, but damn he needs to judge when to go all-in on an overtake. In his fourth season there's little excuse for his 'over-enthusiastic' driving. He's had three poor races so far this season. As per most of last season, Ricciardo picks up the pieces when Max implodes. Nice win for possibly the most popular driver on the grid.

Ferrari managed to throw away a comfortable race win when failing to react to Bottas pitting - they left Vettel out at least one lap too long. Then, as usual, Raikkonen's race was totally compromised by Ferrari's "Vettel tunnel vision".

Hamilton had one of his off weekends and probably needs to send Verstappen a thank-you card for t-boning Vettel at the hairpin.

This season looks to become much more interesting than I expected.
Hamilton has complained about the car, which apparently didn't feel too good in Shanghai.
It is certainly rare you hear complaints about the Mercedes.

Also interesting how fast Toro Rosso, and especially Gasly, went from hero to zero.
Williams looks completely lost this year.

I don't know about Mercedes, but Haas had the same problem.
Apparently they only had Ultrasofts tires ready which they likely not could finish the race on, so they decided against a "free" pitstop.

Verstappen threw away a race win with the ridiculous overtake attempt on Hamilton and he threw away a podium with the stupid move he pulled on Vettel. He has a history of stilly, hot headed mistakes, but they certainly seem to be costing him a lot more in recent times.

What's curious is the way that Red Bull lied to cover after the crash in Bahrain Quali. Originally they said it was a "power surge" form the engine (trust RB to blame Renault for all they possibly can lol) but then admitted quietly that it was Verstappen being too eager on the throttle (or a "foot oscillation" in PR terms). In the Chinese GP Pre-Weekend Press Conference, Verstappen wasn't taking any blame for his contact with Hamilton in Bahrain instead saying that he was an easy target to blame because he was a young driver. There's a few things we can read into this; 1) that one can empathise with Dan Ricciardo who knows that Horner and Marko are trying to build the team around Max (hence why he wants out) and 2) as I've said before and will say again, Max cannot take criticism of his driving nor responsibility for his actions. If you go back to Spa 2016 he wouldn't take any responsibility after going rogue, constantly moving under braking and trying to take out Kimi. If you go back further to Monaco 2015 when he crashed into Grosjean, he insisted that Romain had "brake checked" him and refused to believe otherwise even when Lotus produced the telemetry data which proved that Grosjean had started braking in the same place for the last several laps. IIRC he then protested how unfair it was for him to be given a grid penalty for the next race.

Well, Hamilton really should have won in Australia, but the team 'thought' he was safe from the threat of a SC or VSC, but were about two seconds out on their calculations. They should have pitted him under the SC in China and he'd have finished second at worst. That's 13 points thrown away right there.

Relax, the dude is only 20 odd years old.
This is completely normal.

The prefrontal cortex in the brain is only fully developed when you reach your mid-20s, so young people will always make more thoughtless mistakes like that, espcially of you're a bit full of yourself.

He will get better with time, and he has plenty of time ahead of him.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to have a minimum age of 22 for F1 drivers.

Regardless of age, you would expect a driver in his fourth season in F1 to have developed some sense. His driving doesn't seem to have developed much from his first season. I'll give him credit for admitting it was his fault and apologising to Vettel - that's something he wouldn't have done in his first couple of seasons.
