So to recap, this has occurred in the past 7 days:
- Trump signals pullout from Syria against advice of military
- Emboldened Assad regime conducts heinous chemical weapon attack
- US set to bomb Syria, ramp up military activity there

And then there's this...

Also, under what authority are these strikes being carried out?

Maybe he figured, it would undermine the authority of the US if it didn’t respond to these chemical attacks.

Don't forget that Trump had missile attacks in Syria about a year ago, in part to deal with chemical weapons attacks on Syrian peoples by the Assad government.

One can in part justify these attacks tonight, which include the UK and France participating, due to the use of chemical weapons which is a clear 'red line' of human rights violation so the USA and others have a responsibility to deal with. Some of course see these attacks as 'wag the dog', to distract from all the scandals he is facing just this week. I suspect that Israel approved and likely encouraged these attacks. Trump may also want to look tough vs. Pres. Obama as well to indirectly attack Iran and Russia as he noted in his announcement. For sure Trump and many Americans hate the Iranian government and have since the 1979 hostage taking situation and the controversial nuke deal by Pres. Obama. As to Russia, this is going back to the Cold War and telling Russia to keep out.

Per Trump, this may be an 'open-ended' act of attack to as one pundit said to make Syria/Assad end the use of chemical weapons. I suspect this is just going to drive many more 1000's out of Syria to Turkey and get to Western Europe, kill 1000's of innocents, and set up a potentially serious hot war with Iran and Russia. There is the increased risk of terrorism in Europe and the USA and USA interests, properties and corporate facilities in revenge. This may not end well in the long run.

I am glad that these attacks took place. With chemical weapons against his own people, a line had been crossed. I think President Trump was very unwise, a few days ago, to say that "missiles" were coming and to engage in a public war of words on the subject, but in ordering these attacks - with France and the UK - I trust that a lesson has been learned by the Syrian regime (and hopefully by the Russians) that any use of chemical weapons, particularly against a civilian population - will result in an attack such as this.

I guess the next question would be: what military action (i.e. by special forces) can be taken to stop the use of such chemicals permanently.

Tomahawks weren't entering areas of Russian responsibility. Those 13 were shot down by whatever Syrians had, and that is neither newest nor best.

OK - now let's see what was "attacked" and what is the outcome. Clearly the USA were steering clear of any possible risks and were avoiding not only Russians, but also Iranians this time. After all this tough talk, they just couldn't back down and they had to do something for a sake of it. These 113 tomahawks won't change anything really.

What's wrong with their position? Obviously USA has had no business in this. Unless they (or some of these allies) were also taking part in Syrian turmoil and are trying to cover up "deeds" of theirs or Syrian "opposition" supported by them. By destroying evidence of course.

Putin is neither Trump nor Obama. Putin plans his military budget well, and the costs of this operations are coming from Russia's training budget. It's not USA military where they demand money and spend like there is no tomorrow.

I.e. in Syria on ISIS they train in real life, otherwise they would have spent this $$$ on maneuvers inside the country. In their military, it's regular occurrence when 50,000-70,000 of troops in, say, European region, get woken up at 4:00 AM, boards IL-76s, flies to Siberia (3-4K miles), performs maneuvers and shootings, and gets flown back. Nearly every military division does such an exercise every few months.

Which actions? He is the one that managed to pull his country out of doldrums of 90s (total ones, I assure you), stop its fall-apart, modernize it and get it back into the rank of world's superpowers. Like it or not. Can an idiot do that? No. But one can do the opposite - take a country with standing of the USA at the end of 90s (the only superpower) and get it down to its today's standing. Where the country and its elite is stuck in 90s, eager to get into all sorts of wars (including economic an nuclear ones) with the rest of the world in desperate attempts to maintain such illusion.

If these strikes aren't followed by a long-term plan, there is absolutely no reason to do this, just symbolic. Then it was just a senseless killing. The west has been lacking a real Syrian policy since the uprise against the Assad regime.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

We shall see what the aftermath of this action is. But it reminds me of that attack of 50+ Tomohawks on a Syrian AF base last year that killed 3, destroyed a couple hangers and obsolete and INOP MiG-21's, where the US regime warned Russia before the strike. Cool fireshow. Kinda expensive though.

Your taxpayer dollars at work ;)

I was wishing though that the Syrians would take out a few of the aircraft that were firing some of these Tomohawks at them though. They have S-200's which should have sufficient range to cover half the airspace to Cyprus. Shooting down some missiles is one thing, but taking out a few aircraft, although runs a risk of escalating tensions does wonders for demotivating your agressor against pulling these kinds of stunts in the future. However I am guessing there was some behind the scenes agreement in place.

Yeah... next time the US shouldn't give a heads up to Russia. If damage this time is low again, we know for sure that Russia is not just looking away, but actively helping Assad to maintain his Chemic warfare capability he and Putin are so fond of using against their own population.

Some should arrange a polonium laced tea for both.

But you are right, an S400 battery would be better use of tax payers money, but since they are ineffective and Russia too scared to use them, there isn't really a need for that.

Unless someone basically flies into the missile by accident, an S200 these days is on good cor shooting down airliners. And that is a Russian hobby.

Well - on the matters you are describing here, they look at all proof, and then make a collective decision. Otherwise it will be like with Tony Blair - he went on some tube shaken in U.N. Security Council. The rest you know. It also costed him his position. Perhaps it would have been worthwhile to wait until all the proof is in? But no - probably those were involved in wrongdoings are trying to cover their behind?

I don't trust Trump but I trust Macron and May, our countries created Syria after all (another mistake), we have spies there that have nothing to do with the US. In the case of French strikes they were coordinated with allies, but done independently, with our own aircraft (Rafale, AWACS, tankers), satellites, and ships. At least 3 of our newest frigates have fired in anger for the first time.

We shall see what the aftermath of this action is. But it reminds me of that attack of 50+ Tomohawks on a Syrian AF base last year that killed 3, destroyed a couple hangers and obsolete and INOP MiG-21's. Cool fireshow. Kinda expensive though.

Your taxpayer dollars at work ;)

Yeah... next time the US shouldn't give a heads up to Russia.

I was wishing though that the Syrians would take out a few of the aircraft that were firing some of these Tomohawks at them though. They have S-200's which should have sufficient range to cover half the airspace to Cyprus.

Unless someone basically flies into the missile by accident, an S200 these days is on good cor shooting down airliners. And that is a Russian hobby.

Best regards
Thomas

Nice that even your buddy Trump ain't as insane as you to shoot at Russian equipment or Russian troops to prevent a shitstorm.

Maybe he's not as stupid as you claim and actually has an understanding of the consequences of one's actions? Compared to you anyways...

I am curious to know what was used to take out some of the incoming Tomahawks. You are right the the S-200 wouldn't be an ideal tool for that.

Purely symbolic. Nothing changes on the ground, unfortunetly.

And that your buddy Putin isn't as stupid as taking down the platforms the Tomohawks came from - even if he could - , which he threatened to do.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!
