In a nutshell, he was a homophobe, anti-Semite and a grifter. He made millions and gained an absurd level of power and influence playing to the innate fears and ignorance of America’s desperate and dumb. His "works" and "ministries" set the foundation for the cancer that evangelical christianity has become in the United States today.

I'd suggest doing a little more research.

Your accusations are very skewed. He preached the Bible and wanted everyone to meet Jesus, no matter their walk in life. But he spoke the truth about sin, and he did call for donations in order to increase his ministry outreach. If you did a little investigation into the outreaches he created, including Samaritan's Purse, you'd see how much good he did.

He was a crook. And now he's a dead crook. Without any access to his millions. Unfortunately his rotten son continues to do irreparable damage to Christianity. Sad!

is that a weird way of saying he wanted people to die?

did he? I only read a little bit about him today but I never heard it say that he told people sin was a construct of a religious based system of control that aimed to scare people into conforming with the religious bodies aim. He seemed more pro religion than truth to me.

Making the lives of lgbt citizens a living hell by promoting hatred and inequality isn’t my definition of good. In my opinion, the world will be much better off once these hateful old men who cling to myths are gone.

I guess Jezus wasn't very keen to meet him in person, he lived to the grand old age of 99. ;)

The truth about sin? Which sin? The Christian version of what is a sin? Written down in a book which is 2.000years old and thus reflects society in the Roman empire? The old testament is even older than that based on stories from all kind of different societies till the cradle of western society - Mesopotamia.

There are a lot of universal truths in the Bible, lots of beautiful stories. But let me give you an advise, don't treat it as an universal absolute truth. Don't be like the Taliban of the Christian world.

I got interested in this figure, so I just read the Wikipedia page about him. I guess he did a lot of good, but there are also quite a few controversies about him. So I guess he has done, just like all of us, some good, some bad, so certainly no saint (he was a Protestant, so no sainthood for him 8-) )

The definition of arrogance is becoming convinced that one's point of view--especially when it comes to professing with certainty as to what God wants and does not want--is fact and then trying to impose it on others.

From George Will's editorial:

Graham’s dealings with presidents mixed vanity and naivete. In 1952, he said he wanted to meet with all the candidates “to give them the moral side of the thing.” He was 33. He applied flattery with a trowel, comparing Dwight Eisenhower’s first foreign policy speech to the Sermon on the Mount and calling Richard Nixon “the most able and the best trained man for the job probably in American history.” He told Nixon that God had given him, Nixon, “supernatural wisdom.” Graham should have heeded the psalmist’s warning about putting one’s faith in princes.

On Feb. 1, 1972, unaware of Nixon’s Oval Office taping system, when Nixon ranted about how Jews “totally dominated” the media, Graham said “this stranglehold has got to be broken or this country is going down the drain.” He also told Nixon that Jews are the ones “putting out the pornographic stuff.” One can reasonably acquit Graham of anti-Semitism only by convicting him of toadying. When Graham read transcripts of Nixon conspiring to cover up crimes, Graham said that what “shook me most” was Nixon’s vulgar language.

Of the My Lai massacre of Vietnamese civilians by U.S. troops, Graham said, “we have all had our My Lais in one way or another, perhaps not with guns, but we have hurt others with a thoughtless word, an arrogant act or a selfish deed.” Speaking in the Washington National Cathedral three days after 9/11, he said “it’s so glorious and so wonderful” that the victims were in heaven and would not want to return.

In addition to suffering with Parkinson's disease for many years, Graham's health problems in his later years included a broken hip, a broken pelvis, prostate cancer and installation of a shunt in his brain to control excess fluid. He was hospitalized in 2011, 2012 and 2013 for respiratory problems.

Graham delivered a sermon for Queen Elizabeth on Easter Sunday in 1995 in the royal family’s private chapel. Some 77 million saw him preach in person. According to his ministry, he preached to more people than anyone else in history, reaching hundreds of millions of people either in person or via TV and satellite links. He was famed for his style of roaming the stage and hoisting a Bible as he declared Jesus Christ to be the only solution to humanity's problems.

My father, a pretty devout individual, has a saying: "the only thing more crooked than a preacher is a politician." With Billy Graham you have a bit of both--with his son you have someone who is unabashedly political and more than a bit meshuga. I agree that people of Graham's ilk are con-men, wolves in sheeps' clothing.

Did Mr. Graham bring comfort to a lot of people? The answer is yes. My grandparents thought very highly of him, but one was a simple country woman who for her heart of gold didn't have the sense God gave a goose, and the other often experienced religious grandiosity as part of his bipolar disorder. Both come from a time when we thought differently of our public figures. For those who received some comfort in Mr. Graham's message, and weren't able to see how he and his ilk get rich by selling them salvation, let them be. The sad reality is someone is going to get them either way. For Mr. Graham and his ilk, let that be their cross to bear when they line up for atonement. That is the ultimately irony, because if the eternity they preach is real, then they should be very worried.

This reminds me of Hitchen's ode to Jerry Falwell, "“If you gave [Jerry] Falwell an enema he could be buried in a matchbox.”" Seems to fit here too.

I have no opinion either way. I am an Atheist one thing I do notice is that rich people seem to live longer lives than the rest of us. 99 years old we should all be that lucky to live that long. But this guy didn't seem to line his pockets as much as other evangelists. Although I know he is not hurting for money. I do find one thing funny tho you liberals sure do hate for a bunch who claims to be all inclusive.

Such blurbs are typical excerpts from pre-written rebuttals to arguments presented in “How to argue with liberals” class. Don’t laugh. Sophomore year of high school “Bible” class could’ve very easily been subtitled in such a way. They’re often presented by individuals who receive all of their information from one poorly-informed source. They’re even more often answers to arguments that haven’t been raised, or they pick a very fringe argument to attack.
