The water crisis in Cape Town

Sun Feb 04, 2018 4:30 pm

There is currently a water cisis in Cape Town, South Africa Lack of Water isapparently continueing to escalate. Is there any soultion worked out for this problem currently ? Is there any plan to solve the problem ? It's shocking that such a large city can run out of water like this. Is it only in Cape Town or is it a risk for South Africa as a Whole, maybe even countries around ? Apparently one is not allowed to take showers or flush the toilets.

Barcelona, a bigger city, had problems a few years ago. I don't think it got this bad because action was taken before, but I remember water was brought using barges. Cape Town being a port could do the same, provided there is a place that can source that water, of course.

This article suggests the problem is beyond Cape Town, part of a broader drought in the region, urbanization, stolen water access, pollution and other factors:

If you listen to my South African mate it's also caused by corruption, incompetence, race based hiring and ethnic quotas.Basically far to many idiots put into positions because of their skin colour and political affiliations and not enough competent people who could have managed the situation long before if got this far.

I saw a report on the news about a week ago. It appears that there is plenty of blame to go around here. The poor people (mainly with darker skin) were lining up to fill jugs of water. The rich people (mainly with lighter skin) were still in denial, watering their gardens and lawns. It sounds like a mess.

If you have enough money, you can do anything. The councils can't take much action against the rich people who write the rules.

The rich white people haven’t written the rules in South Africa for over 20 years, it’s the corrupt and incompetent ANC who write the rules today. This has happened on there watch with there people running the show.

Frankly I don’t care, they can all die of thirst as far as I’m concerned. But really South Africa hasn’t become the country it should have, Mandela would be ashamed, his legacy has been shot to pieces. The ANC had all the tools in place to take over and keep the country on track and they screwed it up with corruption, cronyism and race based policies which haven’t helped anyone.

The city - as well as the Western Cape province - is run by the DA, the biggest opposition party in South Africa, since years. As the responsibility for water supply is more on a municipal and / or provincial level, it does not make much sense to blame the ANC (and there is a lot to blame on this party) for the poor water management in the last years,.

This crisis didn't just start in the last six months. It is a desaster waiting to happen since at least two years. The signs were there and the city government could have done much more much earlier.

And so could the government, they could have set the framework up to ensure the most competent people get jobs.

There's a thing called "principle of subsidiarity". It basically means that administrative (or other) institutions deal with a given problem on the lowest possible level.

If your city needs new street names, it is not a country government but a municipal task. If you want to define foreign policy towards other countries it is the task of the country government not of the municipalities.

And so the water mangament should be handled. South Africa is big enough to have to deal with completely different requirements when it comes to water supply. The Western Cape is mediterranean in climate with foremost winter rains, Durban is subtropical with more even precipitation, Gauteng has a lot of summer rain. That's why the regional and local authorities have to manage that topic according to their needs - aside from some universal rules, e.g. water quality.

There's nothing that stopped the city and the province from dealing with the problem. It's not that South Africa has not a qualified workforce at its own disposal, and especially Cape Town has enough money at hand.

Problems with freshwater in Cape Town aren't new, are they?

I remember a project that wanted to milk the cloudy updraft at the precipice of the table mountain.
Must have been in the 70ties?

The water crisis will pale in comparison to the next clown they installed to redistribute land away from white farmers and give it to black farmers. They’re about to do the same thing that drove Zimbabwe into an upside-down caliphate.
