Alert was cancelled for most of the basin,
Quake was downgraded to a 7.9

Maybe a few tidal pulls, but nothing big occurred.

The main story is that it was a slip fault(no vertical displacement of water) instead of a Thrust quake(Indonesia Japan, where the sea floor of one plate is thrust over the other plate displacing water). .

The potential tsunami the US West Coast should be worried about is the one that will occur when a big chunk of the eastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii, weighted down by 35 years of lava flow accumulation due to Kilauea's non-stop eruption since 1983, slides off into the Pacific. There's already a crack on that side of the island, and it is widening.

Shouldn't it be possible to tell the type of fault in about half an hour's time?

I’d say the bigger threat is the Cascadia subduction zone, which is a ticking time bomb.

Isn't the Yellowstone Caldera the Elefant in the backroom?

Yah, I’d say if the Cascadia area slipped, the damage would be catastrophic, but limited in range. Yellowstone will affect the whole world.
