Happy 100th Birthday Finland!

There's a big party in Finland today on 6 December, the country is celebrating the 100 years of independence :birthday: :champagne: First Finland was a part of the Swedish Kingdom for around 600 years, from 1809 an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire and finally became independent in 1917.

Finland has received some nice birthday presents from around the world, dozens of landmarks will be illuminated in blue and white today, in honour of Finland’s centenary of independence: Colosseum in Rome, Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Niagara falls and so on.

A nice gesture from the Finnish government: They wanted to congratulate everyone in Finland personally buy sending 7 million text messages both in Finnish and Swedish, the local mobile operators did the job for free.

A very violent and blody first part of its 100 year history changed into something very nice!

By the way; My house outside Stockholm is built by a finn and I have a great souna!!!!

Tack! Yeah it was a rough start but all ended well, against all odds. Actually Sweden had a role there, some 10,000 Swedish volunteers fought for Finland in WW2 and 70,000 Finnish kids were evacuated to Sweden.

I was just reading tonight about the Finnish Soldier who is the most deadly Military Sniper in history against the Russians during their invasion. A brave man among many who fought the Soviet Army. I admire the Finnish People and their country and their way of life. We could learn much from them. Well done Finland.

Nothing special I know of, the birthday party is largely over already. On Wednesday Finnair offered free sparkling wine to their passengers.
