FIFA World Cup 2018 - Group Stage Draw Results are in!

Thu Nov 30, 2017 12:20 pm

Granted - these are not the real results. I used a draw simulator on Spiegel Online and got these groups:

Image

So, you'll read it here first who will proceed to the next stage:

Group A: Spain and Russia - sure thing
Group B: Belgium and Iceland - the Nordic Saga continues
Group C: Brazil and England - Tradition endures
Group D: Portugal and Mexico - toughest group, even the two other teams could succeed
Group E: Argentina and Japan - one of the two outsiders who surprise
Group F: Germany and Switzerland - another sure bet
Group G: Poland and Columbia - Quite a boring group, only question remains who will finish first
Group H: France and Nigeria - Nigeria kicks out Uruguay

So, what's your take?

A: Spain walks it, Russia gets a home crowd boost for second place.
B: This one looks very tasty, I think Belgium/Iceland, but the other two can do some damage.
C: Brazil an easy first, England can still England it up, but I think they can take second.
D: I think Portugal and Mexico, although Sweden can be a bother
E: Argies win it, Croatia is second strongest on paper but they never seem to gel, so it's anyone's guess here.
F: Germany first, southwestern Germany second.
G: Poland and Colombia to curbstomp the other two, with first place to be determined when they play each other.
H: France to get 9 points here, Uruguay has gotten weaker recently so second place is up for grabs.

PS: My homemade draw simulator also likes to put Spain in Russia's group. Hmmmmm..

Well the actual draw is tomorrow and here are the pots:
Image

In previous years the top eight nations were seeded in pot 1 with other pots grouped by confederation, but this time around the FIFA rankings are being used to seed all 4 pots. This seems to decrease the likelihood of getting a legitimate "group of death." There can also be no more than two teams from Europe in any group, and no more than one nation from any other confederation - does anyone else think this should be done away with?

Nah, I like that. It gives us a bigger chance to see matchups that aren't seen often.

The pots look fine, considering the mess that is FIFA's ranking system. Just for curiosity, the pots according to Eloratings would be.

I bet FIFA will rig it so Russia has an unusually easy path to appease their host Vlad P..

Not unheard of indeed. FIFA is almost comically corrupt if it wasn't so sad for worlds biggest sports event.

It turns out Russia did get somewhat of a favorable path. Personally I don't really see a "group of death."

Group A: Russia, Uruguay, Egypt, Saudi Arabia
Group B: Portugal, Spain, Iran, Morocco
Group C: France, Peru, Denmark, Australia
Group D: Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea
Group G: Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama
Group H: Poland, Colombia, Senegal, Japan

Group A sounds like a 'fix' to make sure Russia makes it out of the 1st Round
Group B with Spain and Portugal - likely they will both make it into the next stage and will be one of the biggest 1st round match ups.
Group C is interesting with any of them into the next round
Group D Iceland could be a sleeper but Croatia and Nigeria will be tough. Depends on what Argentina team shows ups and plays.
Group E Brazil should do ok and I wouldn't ignore Switzerland
Group F - Germany for sure to the next rounds but the rest will be fighting for 2nd in the group
Group G of Belgium and England - Will England make it out of 1st round ? - with their history in recent cups, who knows.
Group H of Poland and Columbia - that could be an interesting match up.
In all, relatively balanced groupings. I am just ashamed the USA didn't get in, but with the cup in Russia and current politics, maybe it is better they are not.

Interesting group they’re in. It’s not really inconceivable that Mexico and Sweden both earn a draw against Germany. South Korea is no pushover either. If I’m putting money on it I say Germany gets through, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t get out that group. There’s no easy win in that group.

Well, I see eight groups of death. In each group two teams will die...

Here's my pick for the survivors:
Group A: Uruguay, Russia - Russia has it easy here, indeed
Group B: Portugal, Spain - Although the two others could spoil the show a bit. Also interesting who's coming up first and may evade a tough opponent in the next round (Uruguay!)
Group C: France - for sure, Denmark - but only barely
Group D: Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria - Honestly, I have no idea. Any combination could materialize. Even Argentina is not through yet
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland
Group F: Germany - and then the three others fight for second place
Group G: Belgium, England - easiest group
Group H: Poland, Colombia - most likely but in this group another surprise is well possible

You can say that again. What a group.
