EWR Barack H Obama Airport

Wed Nov 15, 2017 7:20 pm

Now that the New Jerseyans have found a replacement for their lamentable Governor and the State is part of the drive against imbecility and backwardness in America, isn’t it time to come up with a bold move and rename the airport with the name of the best president we have had in a long time ? The New York City area would be graced with its main two international airports being named JFK and EWR-BHO. It would show the world (and the useless clown currently seating at the White House) who leads, intellectually and economically.

While I agree with your politics, thats not a reason to name EWR after Obama.

As a general rule, we shouldn't name things for people who are still living.

What connection did JFK have to NYC? He is from Massachusetts. And the Houston airport bears the name of a living ex-president already. I also believe Reagan was still alive when the Washington airport got his name.

Finally I thinks this thread is more relevant now than in February given the incumbent governor.

Other than he won New York and New Jersey? Pretty much none. Politics aside, and only discussing from a logical standpoint, HNL and ORD/MDW would have been the only two airports that would have made sense. However, since the last time this discussion was hashed, HNL has already been named. I also don't see ORD or MDW being renamed. Therefore, because there aren't any logical connections elsewhere, I just don't see it happening. I suppose some random city/airport could do it, but without a personal connection to the region, it wouldn't really make sense, in my opinion. I could see a terminal at ORD or HNL being named after him, but that's probably it for the foreseeable future.

At the time, IDL was the premiere US gateway especially across the Atlantic. Think about....what other airports had TATL? Possibly IAD, but it was very minimal.

More legitimate would be changing the name of one of the Chicago area airports and name it after Obama I'd reckon.

I don't think the Jerseyites want to give up their connection with the Statue of Liberty ;)

I understand but are you saying it was the most prestige airport so that's why it was renamed JFK to honor this beloved President.

I don't think there was a personal link between Kennedy and the airport, but the airport was very quickly named for him after his death (less than a month). Generally there is some personal linkage between the name and the location, but in the case of Kennedy it was simply relevant to memorializing him after his tragic death. To some extent it was the exception rather than the rule.

For Obama, if an airport is to be named after him something with a personal linkage might be more appropriate. Honolulu, Chicago, Kansas maybe. He did live in New York for a short time when he was at Columbia, but that seems rather inconsequential in the big picture.

If any airport is named after Obama it should be Santa Monica (SMO). The other suggestions either make no sense or simply won’t happen.

Exactly. The biggest gateway to the United States was named after President Kennedy. Side note though: Jackie is from Long Island and split her time growing up between Manhattan and the Hamptons.

Wrong. He is a Columbia University Alumni, which is located in NYC. Lived there 1981-1985 off/on.

He, along w/ Bush 43, also bailed out Wall Street

Like I said, as a general rule, that would be preferable to naming things for people before they die. This is clearly not a rule that's been observed, but it should be. We'd all be better off if it were observed.

Ideally, there would be some waiting period before memorializing them, too.

That is all the reason I need!

HNL makes the most sense but that was just named after a former Senator.
MDW was named after the Battle of Midway, can't see anyone touching that with a 10' pole.
ORD was named after a WWII hero, Edward Henry "Butch" O'Hare, again don't see anyone going near that. Anything named after something related to the military seems to be sacred in this country.
GYY is named for anything yet...

I agree. never for a living person. While I think it's relatively minor, Houston putting George H.W. Bush is a little embarrassing right now.

If any airport were to be named after Obama, seems like it would be in Chicago or Illinois.

This makes sense to me. The fact JFK was a popular president, and the first president assassinated in the age of airports, probably made it a sentimental decision for the first major US international airport to the world..

I find MDW more likely to be renamed after Obama than EWR. What ties does Obama really have to New Jersey? As for ORD, the O'Hare name is too iconic to be renamed.

IMO O'Hare and Midway are just as synonymous with Chicago as JFK and LA Guardia are synonymous with NYC. I like Obama but I don't think renaming the airports in Chicago after him is a good move, not that renaming an airport would make any difference in the grand scheme of things.

Newark is officially called Newark Liberty International Airport, the Liberty part added after 9/11/01. To me it should stay and not confused with a name of a politician that is controversial with many and has no real connection to aircraft, airlines or pilot.

I was thinking the same thing. LOL

Seriously, maybe OGG or LIH? Newark Liberty should remain named that. If any airport were to be named after a president, it should be something significant to that administration. Since Obama was born in Hawaii, probably an airport there. Or MDW? ORD is already named after someone so that would be rude, IMO.

And to be honest, those are the three most likely contenders for the "word president" title.
