Feel bad for those that maintain the escalator.

Escalator maintenance crew must be part of the resistance!

Of course it got stuck, they used golden parts like bolts, nuts and bearings. Gold is nice but too soft for that purpose. Did they bring the escalaotor on his private a/c or did they sent it a freighter?

do they have to fly the escalator to the destination in advance on a separate freighter?

or does this somehow fit into the 747 hold?

Makes me cringe. The worth of that escalator would be enough to feed a small country.

Question: how do they transport this escalator to the destination, where the King leaves the aircraft? Do they transport it with a separate flight similar to “the beast”? I cannot imagine it’s in the 747’s cargo compartment.

with all due respect to the Saudis, I think everyone here's forgetting that these are Saudis. With a lot of similarities with the Trumps, its very likely that the escalator isn't actually gold, but gold plated/colored. No one in their right mind would pay to construct an escalator from scratch out of gold, instead of buying from a leading manufacturer and just coloring it gold. Then again maybe I am forgetting that these are Saudis.

The logistics behind his travel is mind blowing. The trip to Japan in March was 2 golden escalators, 10 aircraft, 500 limos & 1200 luxury rooms for four days. Crazy, but hey...what ever makes his escalator go up.. errr. down.. wait... :-)

Yes it is a seperate flight. He has two of these you know, what Saudi king doesn't.When he visited Jakarta in Feburary this year he took both along for the ride. While in Russia he has taken over two hotels and there is a cargo flight each day bringing in supplies from home. It's a hard life being King.

Why do they use "stairs" (an escalator)? If you are going automatic, why not have something like an elevator, a platform (golden of course!) that takes you from the door down? Maybe something based on a scissor-jack or a hydraulic system?

Something like this:

'cept gold of course!

Well in a failed escalator he can still walk down. Can't imagine him hanging off one of those and trying to jump to the ground

You know whose escalator should have broken down and would have been funny at the time?...He occupies the White House now.

Imagine a thumbs up and *STOP*...

"An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You should never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience." - Mitch Hedberg

If you were to think about it logically. The gold coloured escalator is there because King Salman is getting frail at 81 years old.
It wouldn't be seemly for the King to disembark via an Ambulift or plod gingerly with aid down steps.

Elizabeth II is 91, Philip is 96. Neither would be seen dead (or alive) on one of those however frail they are.

The difference is that lizzy and Phil have led relatively active and energetic lives. Horse riding, polo, public engagements, taking the corgis for walks etc all help. The House of Saud on the other hand are a metaphor for Saudis in general.

One of the greatest tasks I face as a fleet and ops manager is ensuring I have enough crew fit for work. I often tell the board that the greatest challenge we face is the diabetes and obesity epidemic along with the associated ailments.

Betty and Phil have also given up longhaul flying. In fact if it can't be done on the Avro RJ or a train, they send some of the brood instead.

Phil has also stopped all solo engagements now. He's not shy of 100 so I think he's done his part.

The Saudis don't seem inclined to cut back on luxury either despite being on the verge of bankruptcy. The nation just isn't making enough to pay its bills and is burning through cash. Some difficult decisions lie ahead, such as introduction of an income tax.
